View Full Version : No excitement about the Red lenses?

Perhaps the lenses aren't quite as sexy but... should we not be more excited about them? They look like very good lenses. Compare this to the 2/3" broadcast lenses... at that price point, you're looking at mediocre, entry-level stuff.

Maybe because they're not as revolutionary? They do look nice. Although, the red zoom could breath a bit less for my taste.

Mark / Offhollywood had some goot things to say about the RED glass. I think so far they show promising looking imagery. I agree that the 18-50 could breathe less... The breathing shown in Evin's pretty flowers clip isn't what I would call "minor". Then again, it's a stylistic choice I suppose...

I wish it didn't. It's enough to change my mind about buying one. Hopefully the next one doesn't as much. Otherwise they seem to be nice, probably when it gets used a little more the zooming will get smoother.

i'm not sure that is the best shot ( flowers)to judge breathing ?
it appears to focus from 1.something ft ? to 15 ft ? ...
i'm more interested to know how it is from 5-10ft , or 8-17ft or 12- 30ft

Yeah I'm really curious about the quality of the red zoom as well. I would assume the quality of the 18-50 would be indicative of the their other glass. Hopefully some of the other res. holders or the LART will give it a good run through and will know more shortly.

I was iffy myself on the Red Zoom until last Friday. I was at the Red HQ and had a chat with Rodney Charters about it and he told me he's tested it and raved up and down about how good the lens is.

I now feel really good!

Also, Red isn't being honest about the macro capability. 8" my butt, it can focus to 3"! :-) :-)

Who isn't excited about the RED lenses? A bunch of guys who have never handled or used them and are armchair quarterbacking from the other side of their keyboards? Did anyone see the frames from Jannard's NHRA footage? Great stuff! Several other guys who got the first batch of cameras/lenses have complimented RED on the lenses...add me to that list.

I'm really happy with my RED lenses so far. I received a RED 18-50 and a RED 300 prime with #8 last Friday. Both #8 and #13 used RED 18-50 lenses during our 2D tests, followed by our 3D tests. The lenses performed great! The 2D and 3D footage, some shot in artificial light and some shot in natural light, was crisp and clean. IMO the breathing of the 18-50 is well within the parameters for a professional cine lens.

The build quality of both lenses is very solid - nice attention to detail and fit. The 18-50 will be excellent for a range of mobile uses, especially for flying on a stabilization unit. I have one of the prototype ActionCam RED stabilization units and shortly we'll begin flying tests with #8 with an 18-50 mounted. The lens is only about 5" long and weighs about 3 pounds.

IMO everyone who buys or rents a RED One should seriously consider buying/renting the 18-50. It's like the core lens to build a lens kit around.

The 300mm prime is a beautiful bazooka of a lens - long, heavy, and well made. The pics from it are razor sharp. For nature, sports, or any kind of long focal length need it will be an excellent choice. I even have a PL to PL 2x to use with the 300, thus getting 600mm.

Take it from someone who is highly experienced with equipment, and now has had his hands on two of the RED lenses for a week of use: the guys who aren't excited about the RED lenses are either hopeless perfectionists, chronic naysayers, hyper-biased "other lens" addicts, haven't even used RED lenses, and/or have nothing else to do but make a bunch of small talk about supposed flaws on lenses that the vast majority of them have never seen or used. IMO from what I've seen and the results I've gotten so far, the RED lenses are excellent matches for RED One, and they're worth much more than RED is asking for them.

There is a lot of excitement about RED lenses - among the guys who own them and are shooting with them. :gun:

Hi Shawn,

I know it's late but any specifics would be great. Really in a pl mount, comparable zooms are very high (ie. the Arri LWZ-1) so I am really hoping the RED CFZ comes through. Did have any opinions on the RED 300mm?

Cheers Shawn and have a great day getting your RED-- Andrew

PS --- Thanks Gibby... I have actually been waiting for this post from you, great information and you would be very correct -- I have never used a RED lens, so I have been a little anxious. Now, where is Steve Tammi? Heheh...

It just seems that the camera hogs all the attention and hype. Unlike the camera, there are no fanboys proclaiming the second coming. There's just a lot less talk about them.

Sorry Glenn...my post wasn't aimed at you, but rather at a scattering of posts on RED User by guys who haven't even used the RED Camera and RED lenses, and yet somehow post like they have the lenses all figured out.

The camera does hog all the attention, and the camera is exceptional for sure, but REDCODE is the core of what's remarkable about RED One, and the lenses are an important part of that. They dance very well in unison with the camera and REDCODE.

I think everyone needs realize is that it is the entire RED One system that comprises the phenomenon of RED.

No worries.

Where are all the fanboys at? Please don't let the Red lenses feel left out.

I think they may rate close focus from the film/sensor plane rather than the front of the lens.

I think they may rate close focus from the film/sensor plane rather than the front of the lens.

Its always film sensor plane and not lense with pretty much every profesional camera. If it is 3inches from the sensor plane that would be incredible. But I doubt it.
