I am looking to purchase an early serial number/delivery date Red camera. If your are interested in selling, please PM me with details on your delivery date, serial #, location, and an offer. The camera must be in good condition, unmodified (no modifications unauthorized by Red) and be fully eligible for an Epic upgrade. I will only consider offers for a complete transfer of ownership. Also let me know if you've received an M-X upgrade invitation.
Thanks,
Evan

Hi Evan:
Unless I missed something recently, I don't believe you can fully transfer ownership of a RED ONE and maintain eligibility for the EPIC upgrade. The original owner would probably have to lease it to you and maintain ownership until after the upgrade option has been exercised. I am not sure about whether the MX upgrade works the same way but it probably does.

Thanks, Michael.
I've seen a lot of contradictory information regarding this kind of transaction:
11/30/08
You can transfer ownership of a RED ONE and the new owner can use that priority to upgrade to an EPIC. That should make all RED ONEs valuable to sell and the early serial numbers even more valuable. Remember that a RED ONE can only be used once for trade-in allowance or for a discount on a Scarlet system. Once used, the serial number is then so marked.
4/23/09
The original policy was to have the date a camera was sent in for ownership transfer be the "delivery date on record" for the new owner. That is not the current policy. As Jim, Jarred, and myself have said in other threads, the original serial number and owner delivery date transfer to the new owner...period.
As has also been said, we go by camera delivery date, not serial number, for fulfillment order of accessories (unless an exception like the 18-85 that had reservation numbers). So, if you are buying a RED from a third-party, be aware that an early serial number does NOT mean an early delivery date. Make sure you ask about delivery date.
Also, as Jim mentions, a serial number can only be used once for the SCARLET discount or trade-in allowance. Make sure you find out if that serial number has already been executed.
Sorry for any confusion between the original policy and the current one. If you ever have any ownership transfer questions, please contact Kelly at kelly - at - red - dot - com directly. She handles every transfer personally.
However, on 10/30/09, as part of the Epic announcement, Jim states:
"Anyone who buys a new RED ONE or a used RED ONE and transfers ownership after yesterday... will be able to trade it in for $17,500 credit on an EPIC-S35 Brain ONLY. The purpose of STAGEs ONE-THREE was to reward people who believed in the program and fought through the process with us. Buying today does not qualify for the same level of reward."
But then the clarifications seem to indicate the place in line for Epic sticks with the camera through the ownership transfer:
11/3/09
My point is this: If I buy an early serial number Red, a pre-owned model, even if I've never owned one before, do I get that serial number's spot in line when it comes to upgrading?
Yes you do... but you need to register with us, pay the transfer fee and make sure the previous owner has not voided the warranty.

There are plenty of threads with information on ownership transfers if you search for them. In a nutshell, yes, you and the original owner have to contact RED to officially transfer the camera. Kelly (kelly - at - red - dot - com) personally oversees all of these transactions so contact her.
Eligibility on RED EPIC and SCARLET credit programs follows the cameras, so, yes, you get that. But EVERY person buying a RED ONE from a third party should verify with RED or get confirmation from that third party that that particular RED ONE has not already been used for those programs. It is a one shot deal per serial number.

What about cameras that have changed ownership and done so with sending it in to RED anding paying all the associated fees? What is considered camera shipping date for this camera -- initial shipping for the first customer or ownership transition to the second?
If you do the ownership transfer through the proper channels (ie, through Kelly here at RED), then original delivery date sticks with the camera through the transfer.
Sorry for the quote-fest, but I'm confused! I would also like to know if there is a distinction in policy for the M-X upgrade and the Epic trade-in. I've e-mailed Kelly at Red and will hopefully have a definitive answer soon.
Thanks,
Evan

Hi Evan:
I thought there was a cutoff date after which ownership transfers would not qualify for the EPIC upgrade deal. I could certainly be wrong. I wish I knew for sure. Hopefully someone else will chime in here and clarify.

My understanding is this:
All RED ONEs will always qualify as a credit for an EPIC upgrade, but...
WHEN you can upgrade, the ultimate price you pay, and how much extra goodies you get with your purchase depends on the details of how you took ownership.

Oh, and also: the details of your ownership will determine whether you get a fancy EPIC-X body or a just a plain old EPIC body. :iamwithstupid:

Agreed, my understanding is that if you are only interested in the $17,500 credit towards Epic, you can do it any time.
But to qualify for Epic X you had to buy before the cut off.

Guys, this is really simple. You transfer ownership in the real world.
you have the seller act as owner of record with RED and act on your behalf whem upgrading and ordering an EPIC.
"place in line" is eventually and ultimately going to disappear...aand possibly before the end of the year.
lots of people are working together to keep Epic upgrade options valid.

Hi Evan,
Steve Gibby's Red #008 is up for sale at the moment.

Hi Evan,
Steve Gibby's Red #008 is up for sale at the moment.
True, but to be clear, I'll sell my London camera first - it can sell at any time. Then I'll close a sale on my 0008 camera after I've received my first Epic camera. If the same collector buys both cameras, that same sequence applies - London sale closes immediately, then 0008 closes sometime after I've received my first Epic.
I need to keep my place in line too. My cameras are offered to the collectors market - not to those looking to move into an early Epic buying scenario.

I'm still looking for a camera to buy.
Ideally with M-X chip. Will pay a healthy premium...
