Our biggest problem so far is ....
people recognizing the RED CAMERA and FREEKING OUT!!
We were down at the South Street Seaport shooting some shots for a studio - handheld - long 2 minute takes to test sync at 24 and 23.98 against hard disc recorder, etc.
People started screaming "IT'S THE RED!! IT'S THE RED!!"
Today was the first day we were really outside in the city - and we almost needed security.
It's a CAMERA with .... FANS!!!

It's a CAMERA with .... FANS!!!
Somehow I don't think that's gonna happen in Phoenix.
So no overheating? How warm does that body get?
Wow.. If I had known you were down at the Seaport, I would have come and screamed as well.
Is it March yet? Can't wait!

Haha! You didn't describe who was doing the shouting! Was it an old lady or a teenager that likes wires?

NO KIDDING, this is for real - we're walking through this crowded area where some group dance performance thing is going on, and I'm lugging a fully decked out Red (not dainty) and I'm oblivious to the fact that I'm almost walking through the performance area - oops.
But there's a bunch of people shooting video of the event, and heads start to rotate and watch. Somebody shots out "Is that a Red?" and I shout back "Yep! Number 6!" Twenty seconds later, somebody ELSE, on a balcony THREE STORIES UP, yells "Hey, is that a Red?" and I yell back "Yep!" again.
When we were shooting at the end of the pier, a coupla film students came up and hung around...about 9 inches away from the camera.
Here's an iPhone snapshot from before we were recognized....

Oh yeah - and when we stepped outside earlier in the day to doodle with the exposure stuff, within 2 minutes some guy walking by says "Is that a Red?"
Seriously - the first time the camera saw daylight in NY in their office-y neighborhood, it gets made within 2 minutes.

I do that with other cameras I like, such as the Canon XH A1.
But if it was the RED...
I'd scream and I'd explain what it is to everybody around me. Then I'd ask if I could shoot something. Then ask for a picture with it. Then I'd bug them for a really long time just talking to them about it...
Am I a little to extreme?

Damn! I totally would've gone down there if I knew y'all were shooting! Not fair...That's cool about the recognition, though. When's the last time you heard anyone scream out "Hey, is that the PDW-F350 XDCAM HD?"

What has happened to decorum? To one's right to walk doun the location without being swarmed by future Paparats? I want camouflage for mine, else I'll never get any work done.

Just paint the body white with red accents... People will think it's an XL1 and leave you alone.

Heh heh, sounds like a plan. But I think we need something to hide the smell. I'm thinking there are people out there that can smell a RED a mile away.

Great idea for a Red accessory - a big plastic "shell" that you snap on to your red so it looks like .... an F900!!

I had the same reaction in the same area with my HVX year. Then the cops show up and asked for a permit. How did you guys get away with carrying a loaded RED? Did you have a permit? I seem to always get a hassle.

That is not the screams of excitement, but the scream when giant llizzards attack or communist. This is scream of terror.
Its the red, run away, hurry before it comes for the kids.

It's a CAMERA with .... FANS!!!
Well, there is a simple fix for that :
go into the menu and turn the fans to "silent mode".
This way, the fans will scream very loudly as long as the camera isn't recording, but they'll completely shut up as soon as you start filming.

We filmed the National Folk Festival in Butte, Montana over the weekend. The Red became a bit of a sideshow. Aside from the curiosity of people in the business, others came up and asked permission to take a picture of the camera. "Sure, why not," we responded, "it's taking pictures of you."

I had a Park Service Reddie the other day...
I was certainly not shooting :whistling: on some Park Service land that I didn't have a permit for, when a ranger wandered up.
He was about to fine me, for lacking said permit, when he saw the RED, got super excited, and we ended up having a long chat about it and the Nikon glass I was using.
Let me off the fine when I promised to show him some of the footage I shot :)
Gotta love this camera sometimes.
We filmed the National Folk Festival in Butte, Montana over the weekend. When I lived in Montana we got some shirts made up that said "Montanans love it in the Butte"... they didn't sell very well...

A lot of Montanans are irritated by the T-shirts in Butte that read "Butte, America." They sell well here.

I shut down a whole production company simply by walking through their back lot with Red #296.
Never felt so sexy before.

These tales are wonderful.
Airports. Watch out for traveling with the RED. I have yet to travel without several people spotting the cases and asking if it's the RED.
After Entourage shot here, I happen to be on the same flight with the crew back to LA. I was wearing a red RED shirt. That and the RED pelican coming down the carousel, the crew guys saw the RED logo. It was awesome hearing the nasty remarks at the gate in Honolulu and then the whoas at LAX.

I was in Filmore, Utah (population 12), wearing my Red T-shirt at the Chevron / Arby's. A guy came up to me and asked where he could buy a T-shirt for himself. He also knew about the camera, but said he couldn't imagine affording one. He also said if he couldn't own one, he wanted to at least look cool sporting the T-shirt.
The Red T-shirt as a fashion statement! Go figure.
