I'm putting together some custom adaptor cables and have a question concerning the pinout/connections. There seems to be a difference in configuration between the mini XLR pinouts (as shown in the attached illustration) and the standard sized XLRs. I'm assuming that as long as "1" is connected to "1" and "2" to "2", etc. this will be fine... can someone confirm this for me?

Many thanks

Jean

Yes, the pin 1/pin 2 locations reverse side with male and female connectors for both types so they mate correctly. Pin 1: shield, Pin 2: Hot +, Pin3: Cold - for balanced connections.

I have just made 4 adapter cables - mini xlr male to standard xlr female for use on a shoot next week.

Looking from the soldering side of the male mini xlr plug, the pins are indeed numbered as per the diagram in the Red One camera manual (which represents the female socket on the camera itself) with pin 2 (hot) at the bottom.

but on standard XLRs (both male and female) the numbering of the pins follows a different scheme with the bottom pin being pin 3 (neg). It is then pins 1 (shield) and 2 (hot) that swap sides depending whether you're wiring a male or female connection.

but on the mini XLRs - it will be pins 1 (shield) and 3 (neg) that will swap sides depending whether you're wiring a male or female connection.

I just hope that the position of the pins on a mini xlr pin do indeed follow a different numbering scheme from the standard xlr arrangement and we're right to solder our adapters not by the position of the pins but by numbers. i.e. 1 to 1 , 2 to 2 and 3 to 3.

Anyone had any experience of successfully wiring their own adapters by following the numbering this way? Otherwise we'll end up with a phase reversed signal.

I read here http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/30/860997 that a mistake may have been made over pin numbering either in the Red One camera manual or on the website.

Many thanks for your replies and info. Using a voltmeter and double-checked what routing was done on the RED adapter/cable mini to standard and just did the same. Those mini XLR units are small and a bitch to solder though...

What did you find with your test?
