Shooting on Red One// Red Drive // Zeiss superspeeds 18, 25, 35, 50, 85 T1.3// Shooting at 4K 16:9 25fps AND need to get some shots at 120 fps.
//The end product will be going out 1080i (so would 4KHD be better?)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,
I am shooting a music video next week using a Red One - which I have never even touched before! :emote_couch:
The music video is comprised of static shots - so no tracking involved.

A few of the shots are slowmotion (a man smashing a glass pane and some other glass objects) we want to film this at 120 fps but are not sure what format to go with - 120 fps, it appears, is only be achivable at 2K 2:1 (we are shooting at 16:9) and was wondering what people did to get around this?

Can I also have any tips people have learnt for shooting at 120fps - light, lenses etc. (it will be a fairly wide shot to capture all the action)

As a new user what are the pitfalls I need to avoid? Just some basic pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help - if I have not supplied enough details let me know and I will fill in the gaps.

Jon

I believe that you can shoot 113 fps at 16:9 in 2k mode. (not sure how that will divide up for 25 fps- but I'm sure you could make it work- or just do 100 fps and that might make it easier)

Also, remember to be very aware that you will need a lot of light to make up for the difference in framerates.

Thanks Raul, i'll probably go for shooting at 100 fps then. We have more than enough lights as we will be shooting in a studio, so just wondering if there is a general rule or guide as to how much more light will be needed?

Beware of the crop factor when shooting 2k, you will need a 16mm or wider to get a wide shot. Good luck!

hey Milan
as you see from our equipment list at the top, we have an 18mm lens. Do you think we'll get away with just this, or are we going to have to get a 16mm or wider?

If you want an equivalent of 18mm FOV and optical perspective in 2k, you'd have to shoot with 10mm or there abouts.

Quick Google search revealed this old Reduser thread, all you need to know regarding FOV difference when shooting 2k, 3k and 4k is here: http://reduser.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-28213.html

It doesn't need to divide up perfectly because you're not trying to keep real time. If you're shooting 25p then 25/113 ~= 22.1% of real time. If you're interlacing consecutive frames and shooting a 50p timeline for 50i delivery it's 113/50 ~= 44.2% of real time.

Good point Andrew, i only suggested it to keep track of comparable shutter speeds.
