View Full Version : Delay...

I don't want anyone to complain about this. I know, I know.
We are going to delay the 51-100 delivery until September 28th. We need the time to catch up on accessories.
The bad news... 51-100 will have to wait a bit longer.
The good news... we aren't delaying any other release dates (as of yet). And this is not a camera problem.
We want to serve our customers well and that includes accessories. Delivering a camera without an LCD or viewfinder just isn't good. And we are having delays on both. Bummer. I hate it.
More good news. When you do receive your camera, it will have more features enabled and be more bug free (I said more, not completely).
I already hear the wailing and knashing of teeth. Please remember that a year and a half ago we were a scam. Now we are just a little late. This is a much better position to be in.
I sincerely apologize for any problems this causes, but please refer to all my previous posts where I have said "that things can and will change".
I beg for your patience.

as long as #1108 stays on time, its cool with me. Sorry 51-100.
Does this shortage have anything to do with the elimination of the premium production pack?

Everyone knew what they were getting into, so if they've made major plans based on explicitly tentative delivery dates, then that's their bad. I've made my big plans, sure - but have built in some flexibility.
In the end, everyone on here is happy to get the next generation(+) at such an affordable price, even if it takes a bit longer. So no apologies necessary for delays - I'm sure everyone agrees.

I'd wager that you've already fielded more 4K cameras than Dalsa has in their inventory... and if not now, with the next 26-50 probably more than all the D20's as well... and your cameras are in the hands of private owners, not rental only items.
Not bad for a scam, I'd have to agree.

Jim, just an honest question here. Did you find problems with the EVF and LCD that had to be fixed before the next batch of cameras go out? Was it a manufacturing problem? I'm assuming you guys were planning on having those ready for shipping with the cameras, and something either went wrong or they haven't delivered on their end.
Looking forward to using both of them.

Hi Jim,
Since, there is a delay, maybe we can get some more accessory feedback and development in here. I've discovered a few new, unmentioned parts on the RED store front.. I and others have suggested, since we do not know whether it now exists is a RED Battery holder without the cradle that mounts semi-directly to the camera. I'd like it to mount to rails and tilt like the cradle as well as mount directly to the camera.
The point being, please keep us in the feedback loop and let us see your prototypes before releasing them. I hear there is NEW eng stuff coming...
well that is nice, but I would rather the forum here see the prototype give our 2 cents and then see it released. There is no reason for misunderstandings like the PREMIUM PACKAGE... all you had to do is ask us and 70% would have reserved but we didnt since stuff was in change.
I learned after my zoom was delayed to no longer reserve anything since it was subject to change and Im sure I am not alone. The uproar over the premium deal shows that. Simply, give us heads up and allow us feedback before announcing new products like eng that I have no clue to what it is or cancelling premium orders on accessories or lenses. It goes both ways, when we cannot trust a reservation, we will no longer reserve. we willl wait until the product is out and used by others and then buy right as we buy the camera. Anyway, I still love and support RED please let us HELP you and SAVE you and US money in the development. Nothing wrong with trying the RED cage... but Hollywood so far does not see the use of 4 rails and 4 extra handles plus more weight and neither do us shooters. ;-)

Some how, I doubt china. (no offense to Chinese redusers)

Thanks Jim. No worries. Even Steve Jobs makes a customer mistake. At least, you do not have a million ipod owners wanting $100 from you! ;-)
However, unlike Apple, RED is for the most part letting us help you and not keeping too many things secret of what is coming up.
Speaking of which, when is Apple going to allow Blu-Ray authoring?!
I'm more tempted to delay my RED just so Apple will catch up and come out with their new OS, NEW QUAD CORE, AND NEW BLU-RAY authoring...
Without that my RED footage is gonna be sitting on harddrives for a while.

Adobe Encore already supports Blu-Ray, it surprises me that apple hasn't joined one side other yet. they would sway a lot of people. My bet is they are waiting for a combo hd-dvd blu-ray burner before going with ether. I just wish Adobe had better support for red. If only adobe was as forward thinking about hardware thats not attached to the computer as apple is.

Yesterday I spent some time processing on this approach of RED. Guess we all are anxious to get the camera on our hands, and simultaneously Jim keeps saying they are doing their very best to serve everybody. One of things I realized yesterday is that this a new way oof designing, producing and selling a camera, and it takes time to get everybody used to the new culture.
One of the first things to realize is, if there is a delay, it just means we will get the newest possible engineering design. That is, if we bought a completely ready camera from Sony, Panasonic, Canon, etc., in practice it meant the camera was designed already two or three years ago. In case of RED, the approach is quite different. It seems the cameras delivered next year will still be, at least from the software side, the latest design, and who knows, if a new CCD is adopted, the hardware can also be updated.
So, to control the anxious mind, perhaps it is wortwhile to ask oneself, what were the alternative. What about Jim and the team has kept everything confidental until they suddenly came out to the markets announcing, we have a 4K camera body for 17.500$? I guess, one would have been rather frustrated, if one had just bought some other HD camera with much higher price not meeting the technical quality of RED. In addition, I guess it would help to avoid some of the pitfalls of production if an army of people were hired to deal with those manufacturing components. But, if so, that would also quite likely affect the price tag.
Summing up, this is a completely new marketing approach making a clever use of the web to share the information. Also having a slim organization enables RED to react quickly to changes which can't be avoided. I've never thought RED is scam, but when I did not know anything about Oakley or never heard of Jim Jannard, I was cautious whether the project is realistic or built partly above wishful thinking. With time confidence was built, and have started to highly appreciate the "everything may change" approach. Of course, if possible, would like to get my camera tomorrow, but if I had a chance to choose, still found it much better having all this pre-information than suddenly hearing of RED just after had made some other choice which would have turned out to be a mistake.

I didn't know they made a Red 18-85mm Zoom. Is it a typo. Maybe you meant 18-50mm?

last year 18-85 was in the RED store .. probably a few hundred reservations on it (#37 here) .. last i heard it has been delayed ...

09-09-2007, 08:07 AM
The RED Zoom 18-85mm was the spec for the original RED zoom, a project shelved in favor of the recently-released 18-50mm zoom. So it's no typo, just a reference that Greg was making to a change-up in accessories, to make his point.
I'm just chiming in to reinforce what Greg said...I too ordered an 18-85mm (along with a 300mm) and, since my number isn't up until #1008 and #1248, figured that I would delay ordering accessories until some of the dust settled on the offerings, since the flux was a little confusing. And it was never made clear to me whether the deposit that I put down immediately on the 18-85mm would be applied to the 18-50mm or refunded. Or? I e-mailed and was e-mailed back that I would be receiving a follow-up e-mail on that issue, but it never arrived. I know that y'all are busy and trust that this shift is already a done deal. But it seemed like reason enough to wait until the dust settled at RED HQ before adding more gear, especially since we were told that we would have a one-month window from the receipt of our camera to put in accessory orders and told that they would all be available prior to the camera's shipping. Why be in a hurry under those conditions?
I can see where you would need pre-orders on lenses, to calculate the demand, but it didn't seem quite as pressing to have pre-orders on things like batteries or rails.
So it seemed to make sense to wait, with the expectation that choices might be added or even altered, but not simply withdrawn outright.
Not complaining here--I really have no complaints, I'm sure by the time my cameras are delivered, I am going to be thrilled beyond measure with both the available accessories and the enabled features--but simply offering feedback on why the pulling of the Premium Production Pack caused such a ruckus.

After hearing delay after every delay, I'm glad you're being totally honest with us Jim. I'm pretty sure once the 51-100 guys settle down after throwing their chairs across the room, they'll realize that this delay is for the better because they'll actually have all the accessories available to them that the first 25 hardly had.

I'm not sure it was ever made very clear, but I know at one point you had the choice. I still have a reservation for the 18-85mm myself and still holding out for it, however long that takes... it just seems like a great all-around lens when I don't want to be carrying a full set of primes around. That being said, I'm also waiting for the full set of primes. :-) I think if you had a reservation for the 18-85mm and never had it transferred, but are interested in the 18-50mm when your camera number comes up, they should be able to accomodate you... besides the more situation-specific 300mm prime, it's the only lens they have for sale right now and since the price is so competitive my guess is a lot of people will be interested when they are ready to get the camera. The recent delays have also been slated to be due to a hold up on accessories, so my guess is that they realize that people want a lot of the products and they're trying to make as much of this stuff as they can. Hopefully the lenses are a part of that. But I'm still holding out for that good ol' 18-85mm! :-)

it's a tough call, because i like the range of the 18-85mm as well, but oh the macro feature on the 18-50mm. macro world in 4K is pretty irresistible.
but the 18-85mm has disappeared from the revised store at red.com, so i don't think we will be seeing it soon. of course, many rabbits have been pulled out of the hat thus far, with many more to come, undoubtedly.....

Talking of lenses; I have ordered the set of primes and I wondered if they will be available at the end of this year as originally planned? I have been told that my camera should likely ship Jan/Feb 2008. If the primes are a long way off, would it be better for me to go with the 18-50mm zoom? I would rather have the zoom if there is the chance that the primes wouldn't be available till late 2008.

The 18-85mm is still in development and is now due in Summer 2008. Sorry for the lack of info. "All specs and dates subject to change." :-)

Thanks Jim! I saw the "Made in UK" on one lens at IBC, what company makes them? Guess they are getting busy now...
Just want to thank you for the great camera. Just saw Crossing for the first time yesterday and was blown away. THANKS! Looking forward to nr 440.

I may be using Adobe for Blu-Ray if Apple does not hurry up. I hate the fact that they are supporting hd-dvd - the enemy. The faster, the war ends, the faster us producers can support and deliver product. Right now, even with 2 formats.. dvd at $1.50 and BD at $6.00 for 1000 copies... why should I have to add HD-DVD?!! I'd rather put our more titles... but my capital is getting sucked up in inventory per title at $7500 that may take a year or 5 years to sell!!!!
Pick a side... Blu-Ray is the better format... with PS3 AND SILICON VALLEY and Hollywood supporting it until the @#$ studios Paramount and Universal sold out for 150 million... but this @#$ the rest of us... The retailers will have to carry 2 HD formats at twice the cost and half the shelf space and twice the inventory.... thanks studio sluts! You screwed lots of people!! Karma will pay you back Paramount and Universal... and what the hell is Time Warner advertising retailers to carry both - that is stupid lets carry records, 8 track, and cds too?! It costs retailers twice as much!!! Retailer shelf space will be cut in half... That is BS!!!
I love Amazon but they are fueling the @#$#@ war by supporting both sides like Switzweland in WW2 and like Warner Brothers - shame of you!! The faster the war ends, with Blu Ray winnning the better for everyone...
DVD did well with one format and everyone supported it as it replaced vhs. Outside of Divx supported by Circuit City that quickly bombed... DVD was and is the current winner... lets make Blu-ray that is outselling hd-dvd 60% to 40% in the USA and over 60% in Europe become the winner and format. I'm glad hd-dvd has forced blu-ray to become cheeper faster than it would. But we need to hurry up and pick sides and end the war ASAP.

The good news... we aren't delaying any other release dates (as of yet).
Can someone please remind me when cameras 700-800 are expected to be ready for release (subject to change)? Sorry, can't seem to find the current schedule.

Primes are on a delay... now Spring 2008. But they will be good.

it looks as though you're running your 18-50mm and 50-150mm business, very well.. :whistling:

I was hoping to see some test on that Birger mount before I made my mind up on the RED18-50 zoom. If I wait till the last minute to order the RED zoom will I be out of luck when my camera is ready to ship? Or can I order last minute with my other camera accessories?

The primes are delayed until spring? Ouch. I'm happy to be a late RED reservation holder because I need those primes, not like I'm going out and buying them from another company.
So the 18-50 and 50-150 will be available by February 2008 or so I hope right? Because that'd be plenty sufficient I'm sure, at first...

Can anyone from the RED team give me an answer? Thank you.

This thread was badly hijacked... I cleaned it up and moved all the unrelated disc format posts here (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4527).
Carry on...
