Proud Papa Billy with his other new baby, Red One #13, shooting some classic 4K Redcode RAW on Hollywood Blvd. A little bit of nostalgic history really, considering the many Hollywood firsts that have taken place in this spot.

Very Nice...

So when do we get to see the 4K night shots of the Chinese Theatre?

...Just thought I'd ask the obvious question that everyone will want answered.

Man gotta be careful shooting out of a sunroof. I was shooting like that one time with a BetaCam rig on my shoulder and the driver hit the gas a little too hard and almost broke my back. Wouldn't want that to happen to a brand new daddy.

Hey Jeff,

You're a techno savant - tell me how to show 4K other than in a landmark 4K theater and we'll do it.

We did a combo of lock offs, dutch whip pans, etc with the RED 18-50 lens WFO. Selected ISO 800 (320 worked well also) and 4300 deg (sodium lighting) recording to the RED 8 GB CF cards.

We're viewing the 4K shots in Redalert right now - sweet!

Working on the Redalert export to QT and DPX frame grabs and looking at the pixel view in photoshop - spy satellite quality.

Billy and I are working on side by side Mac stations. The 4k Redcode RAW images in Redalert are SPECTACULAR on the big screen.

Frame Grab workflow: from Redalert, exported 2K TIFF to photoshop, changed to 8bit and saved as a JPG in highest allowable quality. Went from a 2 MB file to a 320 kb file.

We are viewing the QT file per Jim's quick tip - SWEET!

If you use RED Alert!... zero Black Offset will yield better noise results than the default 720.

Just so you know.

Jim

Followed this tip from Jim for the same frame grab and changed from REC 709 Gamma to Linear Light in Redalert for the one light adjustments before exporting 2K frame grab. The rest of the work flow is the same.

Shark. There's something wrong with this grab- There's far to much compresion and a strange aliasing (look at the pole at the right). And it is far from 2K.

Though the general look is nice we would like to see a better version of it.

Ah, and you should use REC 709.

Thanks

Concrete,

I wish I could post the 4K image we are seeing in Redalert - it is Stunning! Thanks on the compliment of the look - we love it.

Remember from my previous post, the 2K Tiff manipulation is laid out and is done to comply with the upload limitations of reduser and the internet.

Disclaimer: I am not a downrez/compression expert for RED 4K yet - Billy and I are figuring it out on the fly and sharing the experimental process with y'all for ideas and input. On our browser, the jpg shows no aliasing on the pole - we see the hieroglyphic detail and this at the edge of the lens.

If someone can host the 12 MB 2K tiff original frame grab let me know where and how.

Anyway, as Stu has explained already you should extract a flat, low-contrast, pic from REDAlert!, keeping the most highlight and shadow detail possible.

These kind of images give the maximum space to correct them afterwards.

If you don't find anyone who hosts the pic, you can always use free spaces like www.yousendit.com or (if the pic is under 1,5 MB) imageshack.us.

Hey - did anybody else notice that this is a shoot on an unlit street in the middle of the night and it's (relatively) noiseless?

That's awesome.

Until we all have copies of RED ALERT or REDCINE and a good way to distribute .R3D files, I'm afraid I have no suggestions. :( ...At least none other than the down-rez'd QTs and still TIFF/DPX images.

I was just saying this looked like it was going to be a great shot and I'd really like to see it in all its glory. :)

Yes, please post frame grabs up as uncompressed, uncolorcorrected 4K res files as TIFF/DXP. What does everyone think about PNG's? They seem to be a lossless compression that work well on RED files. I've seen a 2/3 reduction of size on some some test TIFFs. PNG's may be a good option.
Mediafire.com has worked for me.

PNG isn't bad, but I think they're only 8bit.

PNGs can be 8 or 16 Bit. Please use 16 Bit for any PNGs

See my example PNG and TIFF here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4330&page=5

I guess I hadn't paid attention to 16bit support in PNG... That does make much more useful for sharing processed images here than JPEG does. For a delivery of full frame data, I do have one concern with PNG vs. TIFF -- PNG uses zlib compression, which is predictive in nature. So I can see where it could introduce color anomalies or artifacting. It's a visually lossless compression, but is not technically lossless... So I think I'd prefer an original frame grab at full res in TIFF format.

Listen,
We decided to post frame grabs directly from RED ALERT!
Inorder to show something representative of what the camera could do on it's own. As opposed to exporting a 4k .raw file into photoshop and tweaking to our "Eye's Desire".
Cause that wouldn't show you what the camera could do on it's own!?

Plus, we (maybe just me) were pretty shaken up from the crazy mob that started to grow once a couple film students recognized the RED and started chanting "REDCAM, REDCAM ,REDCAM...". Then a group of Gangsters (of the opposing color) surrounded our vehicle and threatened to "off" us and take #13 for the reasoning that it was "Just the wrong color man"

...Damn what a night (thanks Jim...)

Zlib is a lossless compression library, same idea as ZIP. PNG is always 100% lossless, "technically" and in every other way. It comes in 8 bit and 16 bit per channel flavors, and can include an alpha channel as well. Try it- take a 16-bit TIFF in Photoshop and save it to PNG, you will find the file is smaller, and yet if you open that PNG and subtract it from the original TIFF, you will find every pixel is zero. In other words they are bit-for-bit perfectly identical.

Concrete,

You're always looking for people to do things in certain ways. Is this for the purpose of posting images on your site?
Maybe we could send you something directly?

Curious as to how long you've been DP'ing?
Also how would you rate the Cuidad de la luz studios in Alicante?

Álex Montoya
09-12-2007, 03:26 AM
I am not a DP. I am a director, though, as many here, very technologically inclined.

And yeah, right now I am writing the only blog in spanish dedicated exclusively to the RED ONE. As a reservation holder I just want to make all the possible info available in spanish to educate possible adopters and producers as well.

I will give you my email through a PM just in case you want to send me anything.

Anyway, I apologize if I come through as too hasty and insistent. I will try tone down... a bit.

PS: I have not a direct experience with the Ciudad de la Luz, mainly because my projects almost always take place in real locations. I've heard though that the instalations are great and that they are very interested in attracting foreign productions.
