It's getting close to sept 11 (the stated deadline for the special deal). How do we reserve a Birger?

Yeah, I need to know too. Hopefully they'll take google checkout as a payment method.

Okay, the last time I posted about Birger, Erik from Birger gave an update. So... let's see what happens this time - we are ready Erik, lay it on us.

Erik seems to have disappeared. I am waiting to see what solution he presents for the collimation issues.

Maybe I'm crazy 'cause I've never worked on RED - but it sure seems like with a set of shims you could work it out by trial and error on the initial setup. Set up focus targets at distances clearly marked on the lens and verify they, along with infinity are all sharp and you're good right?

As long as the mount is machined evenly, why would there be collimation issues?

Ted explained to me that even a precisely machined mount can be 1mm out of whack by mounting it and need the shims. It seems unavoidable.

Hello Erik ? Any news ? Form for completion ? Did not see you or a prototype at IBC ? What's happening ? 11th is just round the corner and we are wondering what is happening ?

Cheers

Shawn,

It's impossible for an interchangeable mount to be off by one millimeter, (appx .040") something would be so obviously wrong that you could see it with the naked eye. Mayby that guy meant to say one tenth of a millimeter
(.003937") and even that amount would mean that whomever is doing the swapout shouldn't be doing it.

In a world of precision mechanics it still boggles my mind that a hotswappable mount cannot be created. I wish someone would make a mount-mount that could be swapped as easily as swapping a lens. It's absurd to me.

hahaha Chuck,

It was done on the Aaton 16mm.

Well if something such as a PL mount is accurate enough to align a lens exactly as it was last time that lens was on I don't see why a larger outer mount that the PL Mount locks into couldn't be used.

If Aaton have done it then I'm suprised Red didn't include this. I imagine that they thought about it when looking at the mount changing options but simply decided it would increase the cost too dramatically.

I would pay good money for such a mount so that I could hot swap between nikon/canon/leica/PL etc... would be amazing.

I agree 100%
Perhaps it is the additonal cost. But that does not mean that a third party couldn't do it.
I'd designed it out of red brass and stainless steel and you would never have to worry about it wearing out.

Can anyone from RED team clue us in to what is happening with Berger??? Someone over there must know what is going on eh?

This may be the best quote I've heard on red user. As a manufacturer of custom products that has heard the phrase "you oughta..." more times than I can count - I just love it - it brought a smile to my face like the one on your avatar.

Today is the day and no word at all, strange. At least when RED sets a date, good or bad they say something.

My hope is that it's something very good.

I actually hope that maybe Jim will license it from him. I'd love a little RED logo on it.

So no word?! I hope his boat didn't sink!
