the nikon d300 DSLR has a hdmi output and liveview. can it be used as a digital cinema camera? this is probably the most hopeful/not-likely thing ever....

there is footage from the hdmi liveview here - http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond300/page9.asp#hdmi

i counted on average 11-12 fps from the liveview file (more than the 8fps max stated by nikon - so is 25fps possible???) but there is no pattern to the frame rate. sometimes it goes 5 frames on the same image... sometimes it's changes every 2 frames...

at 19:00 there are 3 different frames in a row... (getting my hopes up)

either this is real and the nikon spits out random frame rates.... or it's a bad capture or encode.

problems -

frame rate - what's the frame rate??? if PAL 1080i is 25fps then it's the most awesome thing ever!!!! but it's probably like 15fps though :(

no full screen mode - you'd need to crop it - still pretty good though

the red square - can you remove the red square???? the evil red square is evil!!!

control - can you lock all the exposure settings and everything like that in liveview mode? i heard that maybe you cant do this....

capturing - you'd need a blackmagic intensity card or a colorspace inc INDI recorder or something else

what do you all think?

it is exciting! but the likelihood of it outputting at least 25fps is very low.... but here's hoping!!!!

i found this while googling

"Re: Frame rate of new DSLRs in live view?

Canons are 30 fps.

Nikons are 15 fps."

Well, al least it would be cool for stop-motion to have HD monitoring.

Has anyone tried to take the Canon EOS 5D 1080p output and capture it via Blackmagic Intensity card ??
If its 30fps, it should be a standard capture..
Also the European models should then be 25fps..which is close enough to 24P..

I think a Scarlet at $3000 would be a better investment if digital cinema is your goal. Still, the interchangeable lenses are tempting!

how long will the sensor life be on the nikon.. as well as battery life..

I am reallllyyy interested in grabbing the d90 for surf footage. Easy to house..

This setup comes to be about 1K and probably a lot lighter..I could even do aerial videos with it and surf videos..Plus one of the new 720P digi cams - the LX3 does 720P on a CCD sensor 1/1.93"

The EOS 5D is a DSLR camera that outputs 30p/1080p over HDMI..Just a thought if someone was capturing the HDMI output..

No, it is not. I think you've been misinformed or maybe you're thinking of some other DSLR (50D?). Mine has a video out, but it has no HDMI out and more importantly, it has no live view, which I assume would be crucial for this to work.

Here you can read all about the EOS 5D, in depth: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS5D/

If you need to have a Canon SLR with video capabilities, probably it's a wise to wait until the end of september. Most people in the business seem to belive that the EOS 5D is being replaced, and last weeks of september are probable dates for a official statement from Canon regarding 5D's successor.

Personally, i'm hoping for a "live-view" recording mode, without the heavy rolling shutter artifacts present in Nikon's new model, should be a great bonus :-)

That's what I've heard that the Canon *might* have a movie mode. Most of their digital stills have a pretty useable video mode so this could be their chance. It's actually ironic because I've never gotten a Canon DV or HDV camera but I'd be intrigued by a DSLR with their awesome still lenses and a video mode. IF it's better than the Nikon D90's.

Low light footage with the 50/1.2 would be nice and today I read about Zeiss announcing a ZE-mount. Maybe it stands for Zeiss EF..
