View Full Version : $140 rods?

So when placing our final order we ordered 24" rods and the bill came to $140, for steel rods. We tried to correct it back to the advertised $70 since we thought it was $70/pair, which would be on par with expected price, as $140 for two steel rods doesn't match up. Anyhow, we were told it was $140 for two 24" rods. So we canceled it until we could get the straight scoop.
I'm not grousing, just confused to see if that was right.

Shawn I'm sorry to break it to you, but yeah, $70 per steel rod sounds about right, $140 a pair. I paid $105 for a pair of 15mm carbon fibre rods. The Red Store ones are 19mm steel, so it sounds reasonable to me.

The image in the shop shows two rods with a price of $70, so if that's not accurate it would be very helpful if the site was updated. I'm placing my order (and allocating my budget) based on what the picture shows (for instance, which items are in the basic production pack), so the listings and prices need to be as correct as possible.

It clearly says "$70(each)"

lol, and now magically, the store says 24" rod (each).
jaadgy, B&H sells a pair of 19mm carbon fiber rods for $92.50

Hi,
The site has been updated since the original post, so I'm sorry for the confusion. :-) Yesterday there was only one set of rods available (24"). I figured that if Shawn was confused and he's already ordered then there was an issue, but I should have loaded up the new store first to check. Sorry about that!

you sure are funny, Shawn...lol. I'll tell ya what, if those cavision rods are actually 24" I'd prefer those over the steel rods 'cause I dig the black carbon fiber look. I've never had any carbon fiber rod break like they say.

We are sorry for any confusion. We'll post additional accessories (including carbon fiber rods) as soon as we can. Remember that all carbon fiber rods should come with a WARNING! They can EXPLODE...

Good times. I'm sure it seems crazy to some that I'd even care about $70. While I'd prefer not to be known as the resident cheap shit Reduser, I do care about everywhere the money goes. Sure, my Red order is over $30k, but besides that I'm also having to also get a new tripod, new matte box, new filters, ff, and on and on and on. So I have to keep track of where it all goes. One of the guys at the Red booth was saying "why would you buy Red and put anything less than an Arri follow focus on it?". Well, when you are trying to put together a big package, everything counts. Ultimately I did end up scoring an Arri FF, but it's the same idea.
Not all of Red's customers are production houses that can just say "Give me two of everything, here's the AE number..." :-)

Shawn... we agree with you. We are trying our best to put as many "budget" accessories as we can in our program. I think if you tried to price our Base Production Package from any other company (esoecially Arri) you would be stunned at the price. And let's not forget the camera! Some stuff is out of our control on pricing. The price of rods is outrageous. We just can't find them any cheaper (yet).

I know Jim :-). I wasn't complaining at all, simply explaining myself to anyone who would thump me for even carrying about $70 in light of a $30,000+ purchase. I hope to have all of your accessories before too long, they are rocking cool.

Haha, this forum is so great.
Thanks Jim for all of the long nights and endless work to make the absolute best product you can at a price that is actually more than reasonable every time. I know I'm often critical, but it's sincerely because I care so immensely about this project and you have shown that you're someone who actually takes the time to listen. I hope my posts come across this way at least. I can't tell you how excited I am to take hold of my very own RED ONE in just a couple of weeks!

Shawn,
you might check out zacuto rods. They may work and may be a bit cheaper and they are extendable. Zacuto.com
Just a thought.

I looked at those rods and the problem with them is it's $85 for a 20" rod. Red's is 24" for $70. I guess the problem is pretty much no one makes 24" rods...

What's the size of those rods? 15mm or 19mm? If I understand well, that's the same principle as the ones Zacuto does? I was planning on buying a pair of 7" female rods from Zacuto to put on the front of the camera so I can mount accessories that requires 15mm rods... that way I can add lenght as needed. But if I can find some cheaper 15mm rods, that's fine by me!

I picked up some rods from RED, all I gotta say is they are STRONG. They are hands down the gnarliest rods I have ever come across...they're practically speed rail...SUPER BUFF! But if you're going hand held you may want to have a set of the Explosive rods or some regular rods.
BTW RED offers 19mm and 15mm

At the time I posted those catalog rods the chatter was about 15mm rods which was what I saw in the catalog.
