We had a blast at tonight shooting with Evin, Brook and John in LA. Our Red camera with minimal lighting produced great footage. Stay tuned for some images from the Red. In the meantime enjoy some productions stills from the shoot. BH

Red One (serial no. 15), High speed primes, CF storage, interior, tungsten lighting.

i'm going to go into business providing a full service mobile waxing and airbrush station for actresses being shot on 4k. Show up, cover her in wax from the eyebrows down, pull. spray her bronzey/skintone, collect my check. It'll be awesome.

Seeing these two images together reminds me how much I dislike grain.

I know that many of you totally disagree. You're entitled to your opinions.

Footage from CTL was crisp, the way my eye would see it if I were really there.

My eye doesn't see in grain, not even in extrememly low light. My brain processes the images differently than film does, and in a more similar fashion to the way the Red One "sees".

I'll take razor sharp digital images over grainy film images every time.

Yeah - it looks like Flashdance gone horribly wrong. There's no grain in a oil painting... I remain unconvinced grain is required.

What do you prefer?

You said do not like a "film look"!?

Why?

But this "crispy" picture has a bad side of video look that has optically lower black levels while raises highlights and should be the opposite like a real film look that optically raises black levels while lowering highlights.

Even Ted at IBC presentation said that RED still did not reach a film quality but they working to achieve that one day in the future.

He was talking about dynamic range/latitude, not the overall image quality. Latitude isn't everything.

You said do not like a "film look"!?

Why?

This shot posted has already been graded already. I just don't think added noise helps.

Why?

Same reason I like girls with pink hair I guess. Everybody gets a different feeling when they look at the same thing. Maybe I'd feel differently if the pictures were in motion and I was viewing in a theater and not through a web browser.

I might like a different grade on this shot better - but it's clear to me a very pleasing result can be created from this footage. So I'm happy. :clown2:

A take on the frame, captured from the compressed H.264. That even so, there is that much space for color correcting, is amazing.

Evin,

You should convince the director (You?) to have one of the themes through the music video be constant re-gradings in completly different looks: Harsh, dreamy, heavy grain, nostalgic, washed out, etc. That way you can play with the tremendous elasticity of the footage rather than trying to tie it all one look and not being able to play.

The fun thing about doing music videos is that there are no rules!

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Evin Grant
09-11-2007, 12:45 PM
Ohhhh I'll get to play, and the director is a good friend of mine and was so blown away by what we shot I don't think there will be an issue with me hvaing fun in post. After all I'm the editor too.:ninja:

I think Evin is going to have a bunch of fun with this footage. Real, surreal, flat or crushed... it's all good in it's own way. Really, any of these images would look fine in a music video. Even your grainy ones. :-P If this band isn't used to being shot in 35mm I bet they'll be blown away.

Freedom of artifacts I don't like and presence of properties I like. Such as detail, resolution, noise, color gamut, depth of field, motion rendition, contrast rendition. Pick what you want and use the tool that gives it to you.

NIce Work Evin and team. I am loven the way the images are coming in without grain being added in post, I have yet to see an example of post grain fx that look natural. I am hoping the image will soften up a bit after you print out to film for theatrical release. (If I was so fortunate to find myself in that scenario!). Anyways keep it up and thanks for sharing.

Evin...is that a Chrosziel matte box rigged there? If so how is it holding up, I am just hoping to recycle my Chrosziel MB that I got for the HVX.

Hey Evin,

what was the ASA in the shoulder take?

jaadgy akanni
09-12-2007, 01:02 AM
Sometimes the grain makes it more reminiscent of those 35mm adapter than actual film, so one has to be careful when messing with it.
On a different note, am I the only one who wonders why the shoulder shot isn't as sharp as it could've been? I'm just saying, yo...what happened there? Was it a deliberate choice to shoot it soft?

About 640... And the shoulder isn't sharp toward the end of the clip becasue we pull slightly for her lips when she turns.
