Evin, what's with the black in the center of the headlight? I noticed it in the headlight of the car in the garage clip too.
Is it some sort of extreme clipping?

There is a sensor protection thingy going on where if a highlight clips like 5+ stops over 100 or something it goes black. It's part of the design but I'm not entirely sure how it works. Next time I'll just ND the Headlights a little.

Thank you so much for your answer on the next page... I am feeling the love again. Also, I know you and Brook are busy w/ hot models and hotter cameras... but you guys are really helping people like me out quite a bit. You both have my re(s)pect.

That's easy if you're on a controlled set, but what about shoots you can't control? Documentaries, reality, EFP? I don't really like the sound of that... is there a way to turn it off?
I guess this means we can't shoot the sun? :usd:

You would think that to the sensor it is just a number, so if it blows the highlight it should just peg the color at 100% white rather than 100% black. But maybe there is some sort of Analog protection going on, as you say, to protect the sensor.
I wonder if that's something that can be handled in a software upgrade because there would certainly be sun reflections (or street lights) that will come up and would pass easily if they just pegged the sensor to the highest white value for those pixels rather than black and you would hate to have to fix in post.

If anyone having trouble viewing these on a sluggish computer, go into your quicktime settings and set the AV controls to Half speed--it seems to be slow enough not to overwhelm a computer like I'm working on now and you get the added benefit of being able to closely study the images :)

Evin, how are you approaching the lighting... basically, what are you finding that you can get away w/ while still hitting your "sweetspot" in the lense?
I'm from the indie school of lighting, minimal but beautiful. For the "sexy" and "turn" clips all I used was a 1k Lowel DP light bounced into the ceiling at the right spot. I also flagged off the closet in the background of the "turn" clip to add contrast. The most striking thing about using Red Vs. any other video camera I've shot is just how much you have to control (Read flag) the scene to build contrast, because the DR is so huge you see it all. I want a little drama and you can do alot in post but it's nice to get the lighting right in camera.
http://www.reduser.net/evin/lighting.jpg
Here I am focusing the DP light to get the spred and intensity I like while watching it on the monitor.

Evin, that is the most beautiful use of a 1k Lowel DP that I have ever seen... I usually avoid them for "spill world". Thank you kindly for the answer... I am re- thinking my "travel light package"... Your answer helps alot.

I was very surprised at how well the footage started turning out considering the lighting. It really was "PD150" lighting - the most we ever used was one 1K and a lite panel. Most shots were one 1K open face or a 650 fresnel. Add a few small flags for neg fill or shaping light in the background and that's that.
Monitoring on set was handled with Evin's HD-SDI Panasonic monitor for DP/AC and Evin's Sony [right?] consumer monitor over HDMI for the director.
Footage was ingested with a FW800 reader on a MacBook Pro and saved on two independent FW800 drives. Total time for a full 8GB card to two drives was about 6 minutes [all on one FW800 bus].

Something that I have done in the past that works better than trying to get ND to conform to a headlight shape is to spay the lens with some lite tack spray adhesive and while still tacky, put one or two layers of double net down. Gives you 2 to 4 stops of reduction, no color temperature shift and its fast and easy to clean off.
I am sure that there are other tricks that someone else can share for this, but its worked for me.

A little black "Streaks and Tips" spray from the make up department or an expendables shop also works pretty well as a spray on ND... cleans off glass easy, but plastic can be a pain-

Evin, is there any way to get the 2 new videos in a higher resolution file. Perhaps a TIFF or DPX sequence. I would like to open it up in Shake and see what this looks like for real without .h264 involved. I'm seeing way too much noise and compression and I'm anxious to see what this stuff looks like when it's not converted into a lower format. And although the girl is certainly easy on the eyes, I will take anything even if it's a 2 or 3 second clip. I want to see the Red footage a little more purely.
Thanks!

I just want to say thanks again guys for posting this footage. I made my purchase 5 days ago. I was going to hold off until the pocket cam because I prefer a smaller/lighter rig, but these images and all the other footage (CTL, etc. ) have really made me think I just need to lift more weights, cowboy up and deal with the bigger cam. Plus Jim was pretty clear the pocket cam won't have or compete with Red One's specs (nor should it). So ultimately, Red One means I'll get in shape and have better images. lol

I'm talking about the RED footage that's has been posted so far in h264. I've put some of the frame grabs and .MOVs up on a 60' wide screen (with a 2K digital cinema projector set to Rec709) and the image holds up fantastic. Really impressive. RED and h264 .MOVs are a killer combination.

Just stop down or ND down at the camera and bring it back up in post. Expose to the right!
I just read this thread, a little late for this answer, but anyhow...
To protect your highlights you expose to the LEFT, not to the right. Exposing to the right is for maximum detail, but doesn't work with highlights.

Sorry, yes, it's a bit of a misleading sentence. What I mean is that when you're in a doco situation and you want to retain highlights you just need to keep the histogram towards the right of the range without jamming it up there - thus the 'stop down' recommendation.

It's called expose to the right because you expose as far right as possible without clipping highlights. If your highest value with center-weighted exposure is 80, expose to the right until it's 99. As long as nothing clips, you want all of the data as far right as possible, juicing up your shadows over on the left.
