RED was going to be 4K with an option of 1080 and 720 RGB
RED team posted less than a month ago, what about 4K with 2K in windowed or scaled mode with approx 100 fps and playback instantly of proxys in quicktime.
Go to first new post RAW RULES and 720/1080 debate This very active thread keeps treating it as if RED team was going to develop either 4K only or 1080 /720 P option with 4K What ever happened to the 2K option which was well received in it's thread.
Can someone knowledgeable from RED team respond to all this. The arguments for 2K windowed and scaled with quicktime support, seemed to me to address the concerns of the folks who want to use the RED beyond just 4K cine.

These are a few quotes from Jim, I don't think 2K is going anywhere. I think people who are using teh camera see less of a need for it right now but that could change once they actually have the features enabled:
RED has been very transparent about this, don't get frazzled by the new hype.

"2K at some higher frame rate is at the top of our list to finish. No promises except we are working on it."

"We will enable features as we can. We have a plan and all it takes is a firmware upgrade (very easy to do). Audio, 2K @100 fps and Playback are all scheduled for September. They will come as they become ready.
You always have the option to wait for your camera until all features are enabled, although you miss a lot of fun that way.

Thanks for including the quote I couldn't find!! there was more where they talked about the advantages of making 2K raw:
1. more correction capability than RGB because it's raw, like 4K
2. smaller files 7.5 MPS?
3. quick to output to specific codecs, more so appearantly than RGB 1080 720
4. QT PLayback instantly using proxy
I also am way more down with 100 FPS in 2K Raw than 120-FPS in 720 RGB.
Another thing I like about 4K(full sensor) 2K (windowed and scaled) RAW is that if I shoot a project in 2K I not only have instant access to overcranking but I can switch from scaled to windowed to quickly "zoom" in when I need a doubler type
framing.
This only works for me if REd Cine can be distributed wo charge to my clients. Then I can integrate my shooting with the RED into HD programming shot also at other locations with other cameras. They just eyedropper a match in RED Cine and download from the delivered disk into their system in whatever codec they edit in!
If some one posts on here why don't you just buy other cameras for that use etc etc .cinema etc. I will come looking for them!!

I have to admit I have posted that before, but I won't here. I seriously think that all FCP users (and AVID's too) will have REDCINE installed within the next six months.
I know that time and money went into developing REDCINE but I think it might be offered up for free or next to nothing in the interest of making sure that it is widespread and quickly accepted. (Before I had every used Varicam footage I had the framerate converter downloaded and installed) i suspect we will see an (import from RED feature in an upcoming release of FCP as the companies have a nice tight relationship.
I think post houses would buy REDCINE and broadcasters may or may not because they can tend to be the least progressive thinkers. I could see the BBC asking for RED on major worldwide documentaries and I would be looking to get the brits to tie in to all of the FCP infrastructure. When they were one of the first to go FCP, it really made people stand up and take notice.
It will be interesting. I'm not sure what the plans for REDCINE is beyond the user, but you will get a free licence with the camera purchase.
