View Full Version : Up in smoke
Shawn Nelson

Filmed: Tonight, Sep 12
Red Settings: ASA 1000, Shutter 1/48.
Red Zoom: 50mm, T3, focus at 4.5'
I'm afraid we may have a bit of clipping in our whites because we wanted some strong backlight. But for the first few seconds, the only light used is a single match. That's right folks, no fill, no bounce, nada. A match :-)
Another shoutout to Ken (Chazmo) for the assistance.
Please right click and save! Also I suggest after watching it the first time, do a slow mo viewing of the whole thing. Mmm, delicious...

That sensor is unfreakin believable. Even with the clipping that looks great. What a feel.

Of course that was me! I had to have a celebratory smoke in honor of Red. It's what Jim would have wanted ;-)

That looks fantastic!
Is that a tree behind you? Whatever it is, love the rough earthy texture of it out of focus juxtaposed with the silky white smoke. How far in front of it are you?
Again, great footage. Thanks Shawn!

I tell you man! I can't believe that people are apologising for their views, asking for forgiveness before asking questions. I get the impression that people are ready to pounce on you at the drop of a hat.. Speak your mind. Be free. I WANT MORE FOOTAGE!!!

Shawn, were you able to correct the clipping using software? Just curious to see if this can be adjusted or is just blown out?

Shawn!
Un F***ing Believable!
You are the new Red Star! I love it.
At 1K that looks fantastic even full screen, I would love to see the downscaled 2K.
Thanks Shawn that made my day.
I just came back from a meeting where I secured a contract to produce some nice cinematic loops for a network of HD displays.
I'll have to get this done in the next few weeks before I get my REDs.
Why oh why didn't I get in a really early reservation like you did?

Yep, Shawn brings the goods. Its nice to see, that a not yet full time pro shoots the best pix so far. I'm very happy for you Shawn, I can see your career starting right now...
Keep on posting man. It doesn't matter if its only 1K. I can think the rest ; )
Cheers

I didn't want to, I wanted to hold it where it's at. I wanted to have the same exposure and settings for both the match strike and the light (a 1k fresnel).

Yep, that was a tree behind me. How far am I? Lol, I am leaning against it! That's right, the DOF is so short it can make what you're leaning against soft and beautiful :-). We pulled tape from my nose to the focus hook.

Again, I wanted the same settings from the match strike through to the other half, to show the range. It's possible it wasn't blown out.

Vanilla Black Cavendish, a very good bowl :-) When I mentioned my idea for this shoot Ken replied that pipes were "nasty smelling" but after I lit this bowl up he talked about how good it smelled.

Thanks Shawn,
That was really some great footage. Looks perfect. Have been following these forums from the beginning when you couldn't wait to get your hands on the red, so was alway interested in the footage you would shoot if you would finally get it. Really love to see that you can shoot with the minimum of lights and extra's and get one off the best footage available now.
what's next for you? Commercials? Features?
Jeff.

I'm interested in whether the highlight recovery could have brought back the clipped sections - not gross exposure shifting but just kneeing the highlights a bit in REDAlert.

Shawn -- First off, amazing work.
Second, silly question, but where does the focus hook physically attach? Was a little confused by that.

Features is definitely the goal, but in the near future I am tracking towards a string of shorts to hone my craft. I'm in pre-prod on a Post-Apocalyptal short and one that takes place in the 12th century Denmark. I'm also hoping to throw in an action short (SWAT, machine guns, etc.)
