I'm just wondering if the RED audio inputs are both line and mic level, is there built in analogue preamps? Is there an autogain setting for run and gun general atmosphere stuff for EFP where there isn't the need or space for a sound recordist.

I believe the Red FAQ is correct as far as it goes (both line and mic level, with phantom power): http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1487

No one has mentioned anything about autogain. There isn't auto-anything else on the camera...

To date there has not been one clip with sound posted. It is on a high priority list to be enabled. This make sense because it is not an EFP camera with out the ability to record sound.

I'd like to see whether they will enable 96K sound, how the gain is going to be adjusted (as there is no level meter to adjust) etc. I wonder if it is menu based ont he back of the camera.

There has not been to much talk about sound at all.

I spoke to Graeme at IBC he said that audio in camera is about a month away from being enabled.

Does anyone know if the hardware they used in the sound portion of the camera will support 96K recording? Maybe it will be 48K to start but a future update could enable this?

I am sure that, as is the case with all other things RED, they took good care to make a very solid audio portion of the camera, but there arn't too many details about it.

Thanks,
David

AFAIK 16 & 24 bit, 48 kHz recording is all that has ever been mentioned by Red. My guess is that 96 kHz would require a different A/D chip. However people have mentioned "modular design" so if it's a real need, maybe there will be a hardware upgrade offered at some point.

Truth be told, I'm not aware of any camera that records truly pristine sound even at 48k/16 bit yet. If Red can do even that much, I'd say they are ahead of the game.
