Jarred, can't tell from the pics but am I to assume the issue of "rolling shutter" is not an issue? This is something us effects guys are hoping. I have to say... I LOVE this camera. I'm also shooting the 300mm RED lens and it is all-world. I have the prototype 50-150mm RED zoom as well, so I have an unfair advantage. But I must say that Jarred and the team surprised me with the car footage.

Jim great shot of the deer. But I must say with this board being 98% guys I just don't see even the cutest bambi beating out fast sports cars for affection. Unless of course you shoot Bambi the hot beer tub girl from the local pub.
By the way I think someone mentioned you were at an island? My wife and I cycle toured the San Juan islands a few years ago with our bicycles and trailers. We broke a chain right by one of the towns on Orcas Island so we stopped at wildlife cycles and as the tech was thowing on a chain I asked what the heck that crazy looking building was that we passed a ways up was. He just started to laugh and said it was a wildly designed week-end house the owner of Oakley had built to look like his sunglasses. He mentioned he had met you a few times before and that you were a down to earth great guy. Is what he told me about that being your place true? It was a wild place to say the least. Seems like you take design to a whole new level everywhere you go.
Jannard
09-15-2007, 12:16 AM
I love Orcas but haven't been there for a couple of years. I didn't build anything there. He must have had a few too many beers. I live on a different island out in the middle of nowhere.

I use the suction cup/Modern ball mount setup as well and having such a flexible rig truly rocks. Each cup holds 70lbs and, should one fail, you still have all the others. I try to include ratchet straps when possible but have often gone without and suffered no failures.
My rig has held Vipers, Varicams, ARRI SR3's in all manner of positions including, in one case, a Viper suspended three feet off the front-driver quarter panel. It might have been better and easier to use a speed-rail setup for that one. :innocent:
I look forward to mounting RED One #414.

Jim,
These frame grabs are all amazing, all the more so if they come from footage shot handheld. As you said elsewheere, this is only a 1/48 shutter speed, something that, in still photography, I would never do without a tripod, and then maybe even with a cable or remote shutter release, not to risk blur. I can't even begin to fathom how much sharper these images would be if they were shot at higher speed. Truly, you don't need to carry a DSLR around if you have a RED. Anything was shot handheld?
Rudi Herbert
Jannard
09-15-2007, 07:38 PM

I use the suction cup/Modern ball mount setup as well and having such a flexible rig truly rocks. Each cup holds 70lbs and, should one fail, you still have all the others. I try to include ratchet straps when possible but have often gone without and suffered no failures.
My rig has held Vipers, Varicams, ARRI SR3's in all manner of positions including, in one case, a Viper suspended three feet off the front-driver quarter panel. It might have been better and easier to use a speed-rail setup for that one. :innocent:
I look forward to mounting RED One #414.

Sorry for not being clear. Its the way one of the arms is rigged. You have it reversed so it will loosen. This in the gray porsche shot in the garage.

Yes, it seems folks here prefer high contrast and saturation. In my eyes Jim's and Jarred's original images look the best and most natural. A matter of taste, of course.

Hope Jim has a nice time and also a bit rest from all the RED launch pressure.

Terrific gesture, and one well said. Though 'Rest'? I fear the boys ..(and girls) at Red forgot what that meant...a long time ago. All the best.
Not that is going to alter the earths eccentricity any time soon, but I really hate being a Junior member. "Plink!" as the sun rose above the sweeping mountain range revealing the splendour of those sacred mounds (whew!) a stray beam of light broke free casting its warm lumens upon his limey granite loaf. I'm gonna post some more.
Meanwhile (pause, breathe, continue) as a gesture of goodwill perhaps a "5" might appear in front of my post count. This would create two things: 1) Some serious cred for me, and 2) $1 billion cash for you. Chew it.
Now on to the main point of this post....love the frames. xxx
PS. don't be fooled, I only sound intelligent. RED are the real stars here. Excellent work all.
And..click..up goes the count.

Ah, back-country STOL flying... as close as you can get to 'new vistas' these days.
For a second there I thought I was staring down the barrel of Quest Kodiak... which wouldn't surprise me given the kind of guy Jim is.... but I don't think so.
Is that a Turbo Otter?
SalaTar

mount it, on the plane ,Jim.
Center pontoon, Duct tape, and land it. hard :D
Its just a few bucks to you and Jarred would be scared to do it.
Plus you can say you were the one to kill a red first, have detailed footage of destruction, and qoute retail cost of what it was to fix it..
you win

Yep, That sure looks like an Otter. I made a show about the Dehavilland Beaver. Those aircraft are tough as the guys who first flew them.

Jannard

I stopped flying several years ago. My pilots (trained professionals) now tell me to sit down and shut the f$&k up in the back. I have the attention span of a ferret and that is not a personality trait well suited for being a pilot. I flew for 12 years and it is a miracle that I'm still alive...

nice thing about the incredible quality of the frames is that it should be much easier to sell the Red to my bosses at a large paper. They still do print photos even with the web taking over for most of them in the very near future.

But what a great personality trait for the current adventure!
"Ferrets are naturally inquisitive creatures with a taste for adventure. They have a short attention span and are constantly seeking new and more exciting things to explore and experience. With a built in sense of mischief and a zest for life they make loving and entertaining companions."
"Expect the unexpected. Ferrets are full of surprises."
Yeah, no kidding!

Uhhhhmmm... that looks a lot like Hidden Valley/Decker/Encinal Canyon. If I find out you guys were filming that close to me without my knowledge, I'm punching somebody in the balls pretty hard... starting with myself.
Actually I think that is Majestic Canyon or somewhere around Santiago Canyon in Orange County.
I drive my 550 down it all the time - minus the RED. :(

The analogy of the attention span of a ferret is something I've got to use in a conversation. That's how I feel most days.

I love Orcas but haven't been there for a couple of years. I didn't build anything there. He must have had a few too many beers. I live on a different island out in the middle of nowhere.
The only way to get here is by plane... shot with RED 50-150mm zoom.

One day, I will have a place in the San Juans. Use to go up their as a kid and island hop by sailboat. My dad's dive buddies would go diving for abalone and I'd jump around on rocks for hours until I'd hurt myself. Then we'd put up tents and let the sound of the waves lull us to sleep. Amazing place. Amazing memories. You're a blessed man Jim.
