View Full Version : Infancy...

The RED program is in its infancy. While we have accomplished our initial goal of shipping cameras that can make incredible images, we still have a lot to do. Not all of our features are enabled. We have some issues.
We have problems with our initial release and are scrambling to make emergency firmware upgrades to stabilize our platform. We have some suppliers (cables for one) that have let us down. Our DSP is very good as evidenced by the images posted by the 1st 50 customers, but will continue to get better over time. Remember that the "big" companies have a long history of working on these issues and we have had just "a moment" to work on them.
The good news is that it appears that we are working at a much faster pace than the "big" companies. We are focused on what we are doing. But be careful not to elevate us to hero status too quickly. We haven't earned that yet.
It wasn't long ago when we were a scam (we weren't) It is too early to mark us as a finished program (we aren't). Make sure you allow us to be human and don't expect unreasonable perfection from us too quickly. This is a monsterously difficult project. And we are just beginning.
We appreciate everyone's support. But please allow us to stumble along our path to becoming the company you wish we were.
I am now changed the schedule. Starting from October, every date that was the 10th has now become "by the end of the month". We need this extra time to get several things right. I do not want to disappoint anyone, but I would rather delay shipping than to push cameras out the door when we can improve them. We need the time.
As always, if anyone is disappointed, they have the right to ask for a full refund with interest. I firmly believe that a couple of weeks delay is better than a customer that is unhappy.
We are changing some suppliers. We are fixing things that can be better. Bear with us.

Don't worry, Jim. You'll always have our support and understanding, especially granted the achievements you've already got. You can use your 3 weeks time as far as you may need. The #111 is anxiously waiting but can extend it more 20 days with no problem at all. Thanks anyway for your update.

Jim - You're a man that has many things on his mind if you're up posting this late. :)
I hope others that are expecting their cameras soon can be as patient as possible. I know it's going to be difficult with the flood of images/footage hitting the board. It gets you itching to shoot the goods yourself.
A year from now, this attention and care from Jim and the RED Team are what's going be the one thing that deserves the praise equal to the images we have seen in the past 2 weeks.
We're getting Mom and Pop service from a company started by the founder of Oakley. If after the decades that Jim has been in business, to still have that core belief in the care of his customers, is something that is just plain unheard of in our world of content creation.

With the camera getting out into peoples hands over the last few weeks, it's been funny recalling the many doubters almost violent reactions when told of this project. I recall going to NAB with my brother in 2006 and seeing more than just a smattering of smug "experts" assuring themselves that this camera would never happen. Everyone at RED should be proud of what they have accomplished to this point. I hardly thought that I would be shooting with a professional 1080p camera before my 40's (I am 30 now) let alone one that will shoot 4k. You have made the impossible possible for pretty much all of us. I know others have said it and I'll say it as well...as much as I want to have this thing in my hands yesterday, take the time you need to get it right. And thanks for not settling for anything less then the best.

Jim,
Thank you for the update. Not obviously what I wanted to hear since I'm shooting my AFI thesis film on October 10th which was theoretically my RED #105 delivery date. But, hopefully my new friend in RED #87 will come through for me.
I still have to convince the school that the RED camera is real and works, because they're resisiting me using it like the plague. (See my post... Advice Needed: Will RED work for thesis in October?)
I really admire your determination to innovate and revolutionize. I hope I can do the same in my career.

1. Do you EVER sleep?
2. Take all the time you need to get it right.
As many have already expressed, thank you once again for the candor. It is unprecedented in this business.
Of course, the extra time will hopefully help me sell my lot near Park City to help pay for the camera. If not, there's always Plan B.
In the meantime, thanks for having the integrity to get it as "right" as possible.

What you might like to try JJ. After of course this insane rush is over. Is an awesome sleeping pattern called Uberman. I do it, it rocks out. Basically you sleep for 2 hours a day. The pattern works like this. 4 Hr awake then a 20 min nap. Its more like 3 hr and 40 min. So say you start at 6 am your next nap is 10 then 2 then 6 then 10 then 2 then 6 and so on for the rest of your natural life. The only down side is the first week is torture, total sleep deprivation.
Its the sleeping pattern the SAS use, apparently.
Good luck JJ, and if you guys at Red need a Personal Trainer or a really poorly qualified sleep therapist give a me a bell.

Jim - give us a bit more detailled idea - so if you write "at the end of the month" - is it better for us to delay it to 4 weeks? I know this is pretty difficult - but we should know if you already added some "headroom". Otherwise we have to ad some "headroom" on the schedule.
we have to plan and to communicate it to our customers.

Whats the hurry?
Why not let the first 50 shoot for a few more months to reveal all the bugs and also provide more + and - feedback than we have ever seen before in the development of a pro electronic camera?
If any hardware isues develop that require cameras being returned to be fixed the smaller the number the better.
Considering the size of the RED team at the moment at least, it is easier to repace 50 dodgy cooling fans than 500.
Also some tech/subjective issues may not present themselves until film out which we have seen none of so far.
Sony won't have 4k until late 2009 and 2k late 2008 recording DPX (so the rumour goes) so you have the time if RED users have the patience.
RED has a unique opportunity to refine the camera quickly because of the instant and public feedback from RED users.
This oportunity will be squandered if RED doesn't wait longer for feedback from the first 50.
The more REDs that are shipped before the issues with the first 50 are found and adressed with the first 50 the more difficult and expensive it will be to impove the hardware.

... thanks early adopters... :)
Us early adopters are putting our cameras through a wide variety real world shooting scenarios - and overall the results I've seen with the other early adopter cameras, and the results that I've experienced with #8, are stunningly good for sure!
To see a camera of this quality, with these features, developed in a time frame like that, is astounding to me - not that I ever doubted that RED Team would pull it off. These guys are challenge oriented and they're committed to rising to every challenge that presents itself. That tenacity has allowed them to succeed.
I have been 110% stoked with the images generated by RED #8 so far - amazing stuff! The only hiccup I've experienced so far has been the reported problem with the LCD cable, RED has gone out of their way to solve that for me, and its not an issue now. I/we have put #8 through extensive 3D testing, mobile single camera EFP shoots in the natural environment, water housing testing, mount change to Birger Canon and back to PL, and many other real world shooting situations I haven’t reported publicly. I/we have found the build quality of RED One to be excellent, including the lenses and accessories.
The customer service by RED has been exceptionally good - in my 30+ years in the photography, television, and film industries I've never received customer service that even approaches what I've experienced with RED. They have a small team, but these guys bust their asses to step up and answer questions, offer solutions, and refine their product.
I'm waiting for my second RED One camera with the rest of you. My #700 was due on November 10, but now will be at the end of November. But the field use of #8 and the other early cameras is helping to refine the already excellent RED One camera system - and your cameras and my #700 will be better because of it.
Those of us who reserved cameras early are real fortunate to be the "beta testers" if you will, and in the process we're generating some awesome 4k images, giving feedback to RED on our experiences in the field/on the set, finding the normal small problems like the LCD cable quirks, and essentially teaming up with RED Team to finish the polishing of this diamond that is RED One. When you do get your cameras, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that the cameras were refined by the beta testing/field testing input of us early adopters. We're happy to do it for you, RED Team, and ourselves - in that sense, it's definitely a "win, win, win" situation - the best kind.

Jim,
No doubt there is an anxiousness building in those whose numbers are due up soon, as we can't wait to start shooting with the camera. But I have come to the conclusion that I'd rather wait until a lot of the bugs are worked out (thanks beta testers!) and there is a lot more information about how to shoot with it. We are getting some excellent real world feedback from the guys out in the field with their Reds, so it is very beneficial to us.
You guys are doing a great job.

Mark - I have a 2 year old as well, we'll have to have a "kids in 4K" festival some time :innocent:
I am having a gas being a beta tester, no complaints, BUT - it is not the same experience that you would have with everything fully enabled. For starters RedAlert is essentially a test bed app, a shipping version of RedCine should be a huge help.
Test signal outputs (bars and such) are not yet enabled and neither are histograms so setting exposure is not nearly as exact a science as it will be. This camera has great latitude and the data set seems to react very well to aggressive grading but, nailing the exposure is still a really good idea and should be easier with the full toolset.

You've said from the beginning that the delivery schedule and even the camera specs were targets and not carved in stone - if we ever find that the schedule or the specs fall out of sync with what we want or need we can get our deposit back. The only way that I will take you up on that offer is if the money just isn't there to pay you.
So far, your schedule has slipped a little while the camera specs have gone up... and I find that to be a far more satisfying trade off than the opposite.
When putting my deposit down, I took a guess at when the rough spots for the camera would be worked out - and it is looking like #351 will be in the first batch of feature complete cameras and a lot of the bugs will be squashed in the intervening ten weeks. If that ten weeks turns into twelve, and there are a few features that still aren't enabled, and a couple bugs are still crawling... well, you dance on the bleeding edge and you gotta expect a few nicks.
I still bare scars from the NeXT computer that is sitting out in the shed... now Steve Jobs, he made the promises. Although now that I think about it, the aesthetics of the NeXT cube and the Red One jibe nicely. Maybe I could pull the insides out of the NeXT #1911 and fill it with some 8 core goodness. Nothing like Dating a RED and having a Scratch... hope it isn't serious? Always use protection....

I have a two year old son (Sebastian). Watching him develop is the most amazing thing I have ever experienced in my 40 years on this planet. I remember his "infancy". When I look back now and play those memories in my mind I can only think of one adjective that almost does it justice -
Magical.
Infancy = Magical.
I have a 4 year old daughter and a 2 year old son... I most certainly agree 110%. Can't wait to capture some childhood memories for them in glorious 4K.

I don't have a reservation nor would I need one due to a lack of experience, but I have been fascinated by this project from the start and to me, the RED team's openess and commitment to quality is highly admirable. If I did have a reservation, I know that these delays would not be a problem, given the high degree of customer attention and honesty displayed by everyone at RED. While setbacks are never a good thing, they can certainly be better than the alternatives. Keep up the awesome work RED! :D

Yes, you are. You were hoping the Next was like the new Macs... it just took 10 years more to happen and cost a lot less. ;-) just @#$ with you man... How's Lisa and the old Apple 3, or did you not date those bitches!?!

Worse than the Lisa... I went with the Amiga... but guilty on the Apple Newton.
I have a bad habit of saddling up the best technology and then having it die under me... I really hope that curse doesn't haunt Red Digital Cinema!

My drink of choice is Diet Coke and my cigar of choice is a Cohiba Sublime (real one)... not to say I don't have other alternatives. :-)

I drink diet Coke as well. My thinking is that if it is good enough to clean my car, it is good enough to clean my belly too.

Sounds good to me. Better to have everything all taken care of.
We can certainly wait as the RED is going to be a fantastic new tool but our company is not based around equipment, so certainly we have the patience to wait for this amazing beast to be unleashed into our productions ;)

See that, twenty years later and I still remember the serial number for that computer... but I'm not bitter.
Seriously, do you still have a NeXT cube? I've been after one for a giant 'executive' toy in the corner of my office... Mmmm... Magnesium goodness.

Yup, I have the NeXT cube with 8MB of RAM, the 320 MB hard drive, the 256 MB magneto-optical drive, the external 2.88 MB 3.5" floppy drive along with the 600dpi laser printer. The mean, flat black powder coated magnesium case was unscratched and the computer was working fine when I boxed it up.
Those were some mean specs back in 1989 when most everyone else was rockin' the 640KB to 1MB of RAM and the 20MB hard drives. Something like 15,000 of the cubes went out the door so it isn't like they'll be collectors items any time soon so I am really thinking about retrofitting a new system into it. The problem is I think that the eight-core Mac motherboards are kinda big for the one foot cube and it would be kind of sacrilegious to go with a Windows install even though that is the platform I'm using. Maybe go with Windows and skin it to look like the old NeXT OS:devil:

Wow - that was quite a spec... My first Mac, in '95, had a 500Mb HD, 8Mb RAM and 1.44Mb FDD...

A couple of years back, a Mac journalist managed to get a few empty cases, to set fire to. The idea, was that magnesium would catch and burn like a school science experiment.
But you can't stuff Windows on a NeXT box?! At least, try Apple Darwin (http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/)(actually based on NeXT OS), and the NeXT-inspired window-manager (http://www.windowmaker.info/). Get an x86 motherboard, and stuff it full of RAM and HDD's. With Darwin, you can turn it into a server then, even hand of rendering tasks.

bradvr,
I'll trade you a RENTAL of my lot for a RENTAL of your Red! You could build a snow fort and stay there during Sundance. That's what I do.
-Thor
Thor - I'll give that some thought :cold: In the meantime you are invited anytime you are in Sunny Southern Cal to drop in and play with a Red - "Ripley" or "Conner"!
