View Full Version : does my Red One come with a storage case?

Since my Oakley eyeglasses come with a cool aluminum "silver bullet" case(it's pretty rugged), so I start to think my Red One might be shipped with a custom designed storage case. As "Alien" as the current Red One looks, I'd imagine only an Alien "cocoon" would protect my 17k investment. Am I dreaming?

Well if there is one thing we have seen from Jim. I think the packaging is going to be bad ass. I don't know if you will want you use it as storage case.. A regular RED pelican will do very nicely.

They don't have red but the orange looks nice.

Heh... you'll probably want to pick up a pelican case or equivalent. Then again, we don't know what's in all these boxes behind the green screen... ;)

That said, it does have the Oakley logo on it. I suppose that the RED warehouse is old Oakley storage. Why buy a new space when you already have one?

Save the money on a case red. I'll take the equipment early reserve bonuses any day. Definately a pelican case is the best bang for your buck and that is the route I will go.

Only if Pelican made a big RED case.. That would be cool enought to buy over black.

The price of the RED ONE is so low that we would lose money if we threw in a case! That is part of my Oakley collection behind the green screen.

Nah, Pelican black with a huge RED Digital Cinema sticker on it (shouting "STEAL ME").
I thought the same thing as I was in the local Oakley store, though. Can't wait to see what it comes in. It's bound to be unconventional in some way.
Edit to clarify--I'm speaking of the box. I never expected a case like Pelican. But I'd rather have it shipped in ugly wrap if it keeps the cost down.

Does this mean there could be a price increase of the camera for future reservations?

Does this mean there could be a price increase of the camera for future reservations? We've always known that the reservations would get the best toys for the best price. Since the out-of-reservation RED body will likely ship without the LCD [and other unnamed goodies], some sort of price increase is almost a given. Speculation, of course. I've been wrong before.

No case.Didn't think so. Well, cool. I just bought six Hakuba NX-23 aluminum cases at a Samy's Camera sidewalk sale. Not sure what I'll put in 'em (Hey! They were on sale!), but here's what I'm thinking . . .
1. 35mm Nikkor lenses (filled one up already with the Nikon lenses I already own!).
2. KinoFlo Kamio (they want $200 for "their" stupid "custom" case).
3. 4 Anton Bauer bricks + 2 V-mount Sony bricks I got with my DSR450 bundle.
4. Nikon SB800 flash, Quantum Turbo, flash meter, and strobe accessories (never have a place to put all that crap).
5. Matte box, filters, meters.
6. RED ONE body.
I bet the RED ONE body just MIGHT fit into one of those. Anyone know if the physical dimensions of a stripped RED ONE body have been updated? Are there any published "approximate" dimensions for the body alone?

we can imagine - and we think everyone has his own ideas for a custom made case. It could be helpful to have the measurements from the camera and from the stuff around as early as possible, we know the situation with unpacked gear very well.

I like Pelican cases, but I would really like Red or someone else to make some custom inserts to keep things really neat. Zacuto makes some nice foam inserts for Pelican or Storm cases. Check out the middle of this page (http://www.zacuto.com/universal.htm) for inserts like this HVX Case Foam (http://www.zacuto.com/HVX_docu_case_sm.jpg).

While we are on the topic of cases, I ran across a nice video that Panavision Australia put together on:
Setting up the Genesis (http://www.panavision.com.au/News/Building_Genesis.htm)
Besides the cases, and what they pack in each one, there are some interesting things to look at on the Genesis and compare to the current design of the Red One.

I suppose this doesn't mean there won't be one.
I would rather pay more and have the original case.

Yes, he only says they won't throw one in. Doesn't mean one won't be available as an optional extra. Doesn't mean it will either.
Trouble is, everyone's setup will be different. Should a case have space for the cage? The rail? Would you store the camera with the cage on or off? Depends how quick it is to put on. What about lenses? Maybe some people would want to keep a Red zoom on the camera in the case, for 'grab and go' shooting. What about the RED-DRIVE. Need I go on?

I want it Pelican-like on the inside for protection, and distressed and looking like crap on the outside without any logos shouting "DON'T STEAL ME!!" :D
Seriously!

I've been trying to figure out the config dillema for storage myself. Do I have two cases for different configs? Different inserts? Get a Pelican 79,010 and put it all inside? Store the body only and put the rest in a Wallmart bag?
I bet Jim could make us a modular case! Like Oakley lego, or something.

Based on what I have learned about Jim since this began, once Jim has Red One #1 in his hands he will try to put it in a Pelican case and see it's just not good enough for HIS Red One.
So he'll design a better one for himself. Once he does--let us know. We'll all line up to buy one just like it as it will be one of the most useful/beautiful cases ever designed.

Hi Nick,
About leaving a lens on the camera in a case, (especially a zoom). If as you say for grab and go where the equipment is never out of your hand, mayby. But never when shipping. I was sitting in a plane once waiting for take off on an international flight and watched a cargo cart being driven up to the plane. As the driver swung around to the side of the plane to unload the cargo into the belly I watched half the load slide off the trolly onto the ground. The case on top of the load held our brand new Cinema Producs CP-65mm camera which fell about eight feet to the tarmac. Not a pretty sight. Fortunately the only thing in that case was the camera body tightly surrounded by six inches of proper padding an it survied the impact. A lens where it attaches to the camera mount, (especially a zoom) is the weakest point of construction and is best transported in its own case. Ask any rental house. Needless to say that fourteen hour flight required many cocktails to calm the nerves as I was the camera tech on the shoot.

Maybe at the RED booth at NAB there will be some Custom red pelican cases with a foam cutout for this camera and accessories. Hey I've shipped my Sony camera all over the world with SONY embosses in huge letters on both sides of the rollaround! Isn't that what insurance is for? I'll bet a lot of us would pay a few hundered for a custom red Pelican with the logo tastefully on the side!!!!!
alsa my number is so hi that I will have to watch as others take delivery......

That's why no one stole it. Putting a SONY sticker on the outside of your case is all the theft deterrent you need.

Chuck,
Seen things like that many times with bonehead baggage handlers and bell hops. We used to fly with our cameras in checked luggage, and we were always having problems with them in the field. We bought carry-on soft cases for the cameras and started using them, and guess what - the field camera problems stopped! We've never checked a camera into baggage since, for a period of over 16 years now.

I'd just stick with a black 1600. Of all the things to complain about regarding the Red, the most pressing is the lack of a custom case?
Also, I'd never want to advertise that the case I'm carrying has over $20,000 of pretty in it. Hell, a Pelican is advertisement enough that something valuable enough to steal lay within.

Insurance doesn't help you when you're on location far from any replacements.
Maybe we can have two versions: The SHINY STEAL ME version and the INVISIBLE STEALTH version!!

...I just had a vision of myself with the yellow case and a radioactive materials, hazmat label on it. When asked at the security checkpoint in the airport what's in the case, I could calmly reply "It's an atomic bomb, what else would it be?"
Hehe... At least I know how to get myself arrested.

Cameras I've had with cases:
RCA TK-76A
Ikegami HL79EAL
Ikegami V55
Sony D600WS (still have and use it)
Number of times I've used the case:
Zero
Leave it or ship it in the case, it gets stolen or broken. I always hand carry it in a soft shoulder bag (Porta Brace will probably have a nice one designed for RED by NAB...and maybe they'll have custom RED cordura!).

Soft cases are the way to go. It is always nice to have a camera by my side, even when I am just driving through town. I figure the one time I don't have a camera with me will be one time a alien konks out my car and demands that I take them to my leader.
