Hi,
does anyone know about shipping costs/customs to Germany ? Is there such a rule that excludes custom charges to things unavailable in your country ?

I'd like to know that, too.

VAT has to be paid, that´s clear. But that -like with anything else that you pay VAT for as a company, doesn´t present a problem, of course. But what about customs ?

I presume the same as in the Netherlands.
4.9 % import tax on electronics; camera, viewfinder, lcd and none on optics..

here some links:
TARIC Code ( code of what you want to import)

here are some differences between cam types....
but i still dont know a way to escape from this.

different tariffs for camera 4.9%, viewfinder 5.5%, batteries 3.3%
it seems to be flexible - ask your carrier - they should know - if you
ship with fedex - they will do anything as camera...

what will be the workflow of shipping the red?
will red announce a service (for example fedex) or will it up to us to organize the pick up of the camera?

In case your package comes into checking in the customs (and bet: this package gets opened due to weight, origin and not only murphys law), the carrier has nothing to do with the declaration.
Thats with the shipping originator, and RED will declare that right, thats their duty as a manufacturer.
The cam itself will be categorized and as long as its not completely ripped apart should be considered as a system, a camera system. A certain category will apply to it and following its rate/fee.
Even the category may change from customs to customs bureau. One might go for one tendency he thinks this camera accords to, another person to another.
I remember discussions from professional CRT monitors, if they should apply to category "computer monitor" which they were clearly not, or to category TV, which also didn't. But of course one category is cheaper than the other.
Would be interesting if somebody has a clue about certain "special" cameras imported. Customs sometimes ask the carrier and if your lucky the carrier checks back with you to help declaring. Better define it according to the cheaper category then.
Anybody imported cameras from the US ? Like bodies from EOL products ? Such a person may know.

Hmm, I´m also thinking of flying over to Red and pick the stuff up myself. Would be nice to talk to the guys personnally and have them talk me trough everything. Also a nice way of "protecting" the new equipment on it´s way to Europe and a nice opportunity for a short vacation also :)

I intend to do the same, hence my question to the RED team: Will you charge California tax when Europeans pick up their goods in person? (I guess not, but would like to have verified.)

i think it´s ok when you get the package by an express service. every sony and panasonic has to do its trip from asia to europe, so i am not afraid that their is too less protection. when you fly to red and pick it up the next step will be on the airport in USA, so in a civil airplane they surely want to see the stuff in the package and you have to open it at the check-in or gate. this can be very complicated i experienced. no good idea in my opinion, you can´t take all of it in the cabin, if you only order the body you can take it with you, but i think the transport with fedex or similar is safe too (every computer is delivered each day from all over the world without damage and so on). i trust red that they will have good package for their products, and actually specialized express flights are often more careful with the cargo then in the civil-flights.
the safest way for the stuff would be a nice trans-atlantic trip with a big boat, you have all your stuff in the cabin, you can shoot three weeks, but it´s looong...

guess you´re right, but it´s more about being able to talk to the guys of Red drirectly and get a nice introduction to the new gear and a personal touch to it, I think. Also, as I said, CA is a nice place to stay for a while :)

Yeah, it would be really great if Red would eventually open a European shop/office and ease things for us, customs- and shipment-wise.

According to Ted at IBC, this is not what tey plan to do. At least not for their sales, because they´d like to keep their prices low and therfore cut out distributors. So again, they´re very different from any other product/company we´re used to in the industry. Nonetheless, another Red guy told me that doesn´t mean there won´t be a support for Europe in the future in case of repair or other emergencies...

And remember the camcorders that had the video in disabled because they would otherwise be categorised as "videorecorders"?

@ josch,
your red number is close to shipping, maybe you can tell us germans / europeans how all the stuff with custom, shipping and so on worked when you received your cam? would be great.

Sure, will do.
I thought about a nice little California mini holiday, but I´m so swamped with work, that´s out of the question.
Could not even find a spot for ibc.

Dear RED team:
Do you (or do you not) have to charge California tax when non-US buyers pick up their RED in person?

I believe they have to. Like when you're on vacancy in the US. I tried once and got the info that you have to provide an export certificate or something that proves you will export that thing.
Pretty much like in Germany. You cannot buy it without VAT except you prove export.
At the same time I believe there are some rare exceptions like with the flavours of intercourse you're allowed to or not.. even if thats another story...:sarcasm:
