In keeping with Reds open development philosophy lets get some feedback on early adopters. What problems, glitches, or issues if any have you encountered to date? Lets hear what you have to say, there has been a lot of image critiques by alot of different people but how about the camera itself. Lets create a master list here what feedback do you have? Please provide feedback only if you have actual hands on experience with the camera.

We sent out a build the end of last week that had some features enabled and also a few bugs we have never seen before. We worked over the weekend to address these issues in the next build which is scheduled to go out in a day or two. I shot all weekend and experienced these issues personally. It didn't stop me from shooting everything I wanted, but it was nice to verify what we were hearing from our customers.
I would expect this type of stuff to continue for the next month or so. It is one of the reasons we delayed the shipping of the next 50. We want to find and fix as many things as possible while we continue to enable features.

Excellent start Jim, I'm a die hard fan. I'm just trying to get a better read on early problems that cropped up during early testing. Is there anything more specific to "bugs" that you would be willing to share with us?

I just think we should sorta consider these cameras beta for now and not worry about publicly sifting through bugs. Maybe after 400 cameras are out there this kind of thread would make sense. But right now there are only what 50 or 100? RED is dealing with them fine. This stuff affects only them right now.
Perhaps RED already has a private thread for those guys. If not, maybe they should have one.
(and I'm normally the big open communication air the dirty laundry kinda guy - but it's just too early for that IMHO)

What Joelnet says makes some sense to me. Presuming that existing bugs are quickly being fixed, they currently only affect the existing cameras (50 in total including Jim's). The most significant bugs appear to have happened only with the most recent firmware. Given that this forum has a very large readership, widespread comments on a bug that may not exist after this week is past, may cause confusion among potential red users. Not the regulars here but the more casual readers or people getting stuff secondhand etc. I guess that's why many organizations have closed beta programs, NDA's, etc.

I totally agree. I don't need to know what bugs they are working on - only that they get fixed. The RED team seems to be doing an amazing job and it seams every new owner has several hotlines back to the team for troubleshooting and personal service.
This is a public board and our detractors don't need any fuel from us to feed their rumor mill.
Perception is reality... so we don't need to add any negatives to that perception unnecessarily, IMHO.

On the other hand, in our tech dependent world, every new product has bugs. Red is doing a fantastic job of dealing with isssues that come up. I'll be getting my first camera soon so I like hearing about any issues that the first 50 have had. The rumor mill will be the rumor mill regardless, just visit the other sites and see. The images speak for themselves, this camera will eventually become legend so let's not worry about the rumor mill.

I also think it too early for it.
They are addressing all of the problems on spot, and deal with it on per case base.
That's enough for me.
Things will change when the production units will ship, that I am sure of.

I don't mind that certain problems exist I just want to know what they are so I can know that they are in fact resolved, and don't show up at a later date. I don't think its airing dirty laundry at all. I think it is completely in keeping with Reds business philosophy and I for one really appreciate knowing where the potential issues and problems are.

We don't expect perfection. We expect honesty and integrity and a good damn camera. I think noone can argue that so far your batting 1000. Thanks for the updates, Jim and co.

It seems like every time a bug pops up, it vanishes in the next version. Maybe a new one will pop up... but not for long. In the time it would take to compile a list of known bugs... they'd be solved! :)

I hope RED joins the big leagues of Apple and Avid forums...where all bugs and solutions are honestly posted and addressed. I do not care what RED haters think, Fan Boys be quiet since you do not solve problems... If there is a bug one should be able to post it... and have RED tech respond. OK, maybe not on this forum but under a new topic - RED FIXES AND UPDATES... Lets start it now....
Just like Apple's Color bugs, I much rather see the bugs, see the work arounds, if any... and or do, not do... and wait till an updated fix is posted and updated.
This is part of the process and of a great company... please do not be scared of bugs or recalls... this is the strength of a company that says, yes there is a bug, thank you, we will fix and update it, and we will notify you and everyone.. either directly or publicly.
I'd like to see a new section for RED owners only to post problems and RED company to respond... edited for BS or emotional listings... but factual. Comments and discussions could be held next to the facts and answers.
AVID with every release/update would list the known bugs with it, I hope RED can do that and create a forever 100+ beta testers for all updates... 1-2 months before it is given to the rest of the users to stamp out the old bugs and the possible new bugs.
Back in the day... if it wasn't broke, you did NOT update your Avid or editing machine... I still recommend that for old software that had no bug may catch a bug from an update.. and now your working system is not working... unless you update is with all new hardware and all new software.. and hopefully few bugs...
NASA does not update, it sets a standard and sticks to it... so all their systems work... even if it is 20 years old... there is a smart reason for this.
For me and others, update every 5 years with new camera, gear, and post... and pay it off with good old work. Update ONLY when you see others systems are stable and proven...
SO... let's create a RED TEST PILOTS PROGRAM - that will certify updates 30 days with no bugs for the rest of us. Any owner is welcome to join. The RED TESTERS PROGRAM is a public forum with problems, suggested solutions, actual RED solutions, more testing and approval by TESTERs, certified... to the best of their ability and released... to then be double checked and confirmed by major Hollywood 3rd party shooter/production houses a few weeks later... saying yes, it works OR it can work with these work around these new bugs... etc...

Yeah, I think a sticky or subforum addressing bugs and possible op errors will be good. Mods should monitor it closely and get rid of all the posts revolving around emotions. Although its interesting to read 10+ pages of grown men searching their souls over whether to post or not to post about camera issues, it is also a pain to comb through all these 'feelings' to get pertinent information...

i would expect that to happen every once in awhile.. with development sometimes you fix one thing and as a side effect it breaks another thing.
The good thing is that we have a swat team of trained professionals working around the clock that can respond and fix these bugs in an incredibly short time span.
Another good thing is there is a good number of camera out there and they are mostly being used everyday all day, so bug reporting happens much faster than we had when we just were working with a handful of cameras.
