Will be filming in a small room about 12 Ft * 10 Ft in a world war 2 control tower, with a desk and person sitting on a chair at the desk. Only one entrance behind the person at the desk.
Any suggestions on the best lens for the job. Budget is reasonable but don't want to spend to much if I can get away with a cheaper option. I don't have any wide angle lenses at present

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 in Nikon mount with suitable Nikon adaptor.

Best value, low distortion lens available for the RED!

Thanks, when you say nikon mount, does this need and adaptor as well?

The only Nikon mount that has its own adaptor is the Allstar mount -- an excellent system by the way. But there is the Red Nikon mount, and the excellent Jacek Nikon mount.

What do you mean by "Adaptor" Rod? From what to what?

We have the Duclos conversion of the Tokina 11-16. Pretty sweet lens - and it's PL.

Sorry I confused you I have the Red Nikon mount, I wasn't sure if the Torkina 11 16 came with a nikon style mount, I am now pretty sure it does. so I have the means to fit it on the Red.

Thanks .

Tokina comes in both Canon and Nikon mount.

Note you'll want a Nikon mount that can control the iris as the Tokina doesn't have an external iris ring. In order of ascending cost, Doug Underdahl can modify the stock RED Nikon mount, or Jacek at Optitek sells the Nikon ProLock, or Matthew Duclos can modify the whole lens with an iris ring.

Thanks good info, I don't think I will have time to send it to the US for mods.

Then your best bet might be to hire PL fit lenses, or an already modified Nikon mount or ProLock. Where are you based?

What does Doug Underdahl do to the stock RED Nikon mount to enable you to control the Iris on the Tokina 11-16?

Based in South Wales UK. I am going to order the lens tuesday anyway, as I don't have anything that wide, as I normally shoot HDcam with Zooms. Only had the Red a couple of weeks.

Too far away from London to help you I'm afraid! :frown2:

How are you going to set iris then? With your DSLR?
I know you can do it with the Canon mount version and a Canon DSLR, but not sure about Nikons.

I have placed tape on the metal tab on a nikon lens once before to set the iris and then ND or light to suit. not ideal, it does work. I use trial and error to get the F stop I am looking for. In the case almost wide open.

If you are the DOP for this shoot insist on renting the Arri 8R prime lens.
F 2.8 & Close Focus 1.25'
http://www.arri.de/camera/lenses/35_format_lenses/ultra_prime_8r.html

If you are the Producer this is where you spend the budget by renting this one piece of glass to shoot this scene. It will enable amazing creativity and the results are rather spectacular on the R1.

I also own and shoot the Tokina - it will work.
I'd rent the 8R.

I don't think I can rent a single lens here ,they rent out in set's but I will look into it.
Thanks

Arri is aware of this challenge in the changing rental market for their primes.
Contact me via email and I will help your request get to the Arri folks for POSSIBLE assistance. They are a great company.

That Zeiss 8R lens is insane. If you can swing the budget, that lens gets my vote hands down. I would buy one if it didn't cost more than an EPIC. :)

Well surely it depends on what Paul wants to get in his shot? The 8R is certainly the best extreme rectilinear wide angle lens, but it's almost TOO wide. It's viewpoint lends itself almost as a special effect. IMHO the 11-16mm range is about as wide as I would want to go if I didn't want the lens to start imposing a certain stylised look on the shot. In many cases, even 11-16mm is too wide for a naturalistic feel, but it's very useful in confined spaces where you wouldn't get the shots otherwise.

Thats an interesting observation, I want it to look as natural as possible. I have ordered the Optitek mount. and will order the tokina tomorrow. cheers

8mm & 10mm lenses are never part of a set they come as individual lenses.

When one is using these extremely wide angle lenses the trick is to having something big in foreground to one side of frame or to track past something to show a huge perspective. To just use them as a wide angle to fit everything in frame is really boring
obviously IMHO
