View Full Version : Craters on the Crescent Moon

Filmed: Saturday, Sep 15th
Red Settings: ASA 1000, Shutter 1/48.
Red 300mm prime, T3

I wasn't going to post this clip as it needs some post work I haven't the time for. But, I got too many requests, so here it is.

Mostly it needs some slight stabilization (there must have been a slight breeze) and the blacks need to be cleaned up without losing the treeline. But, the moon still looks awesome. Once you've watched it once, try scrolling through it quickly and you can see how much the moon is setting in just a 14 sec clip!

A big thanks to Ken (Chazmo) for hosting the file. It's a bigger one.

Nice shot.
Yeah those long lenses will tell you about the stability of your sticks alright.

Definitely shows RED's capabilities under low light conditions. The Red really shines where other high end Sony or Panasonic gear has produced disappointing results. If all you've got to do at the end of the day is bring your footage into SHAKE and clean up the blacks, RED has something good going for them. I wonder now how it would perform to reveal the moonlit hills covered with snow under a full moon?

Absolutely fabulous - well done Shawn! I'm really happy for you!

very nice shawn!

why would you clean up the blacks? it's the naturel effect of athmospheric diffusion - just tinting the blacks to blue for example would give it more presence..

I think he means because the blacks are very noisy. Maybe it's me watching on my laptop screen (which seems to lighten things up). However I assume if you crush the black slightly this will go away.

Shawn, was this exported out of Red Alert using the quicktime wrapper? (make quicktimes or make 1k quicktime)
This uses a simplified debayering that will cause more noise than a 4K export scaled to 1K.
If that is the case and you have the time could you post a 4K tiff or PNG?

Shawn that was amazing, I love the sceenery. I really enjoyed your other clip as well. The bird flying low over the water!!! Beautiful! This camera is going to be wondeful for nature clips. Great job!

Shawn,

The clip is nice, but I'm curious about the export process. It seems the image is far noisier than anything shown so far. Is this a result of a higher ISO or compression of the clip?

Also, there are some heavy pixel effects/aliasing on the top and bottom of the moon. Is this a result of down-scaling to 1k, the debayering, or is this my own machine's decoding (linux)?

Did anyone else notice this? Is it in the raw footage?

Thanks again for posting!

i thought it was very noisy too, but in all honesty most of the low light clips do seem to be noisy but only in the blacks. (the close up clips of the shrunked head and vinegar label showed this too)

Until I get hold of Redcine myself its hard to know whether this is purely a 'developing' issue in RedAlert or whether its natural and we should be crushing the blacks to get rid of it.

Kyle, that level of noise is actually very low compared to what most have come to expect from sensors. It's probably not a good idea to push the ISO quite that far in an actual production, but it shows what's possible.

I tried After Effect's grain reduction on the clip and it was quite usable. Very exciting clip Shawn, thanks!

I took the freedom to remove the noise almost completely - easy thing on slow pacing shots like this.

Download SettingMoon_denoised here (http://www.loom.at/~loomdata/private/SettingMoonv2.avi) (it's AVI with MJPG at highest quality setting; 4:2:2 - use Quicktime to play it or any standard MJPG codec you got on your system).
It will be online 10 minutes after this posting.

EDIT: Footage is online available now.

It is. I'm even more excited to see what will be possible when the shutter speed can be adjusted. I bet with your work in natural-light cinematography that's something you're waiting for too.

It just gets better from here...

Wow, I didn't know that. I had assumed it was locked at 1/48 still. Very cool.

Shawn, what shutter speed were you shooting at?

Yes there's noise, but with ASA @1000 under those almost no light condition. it fairs well.
