Stuart, if you had to put together a package using only zoom lenses which can fill a full frame (24mm X 36mm) image circle, what would you include?

Thanks much. :)

I didn't see the 24-70mm on your site. And when did the price of the 14-24mm go up so much?

The 24-70 is still in the prototype stages. The 14-24 Ruby went up after all the changes from the prototype. Bandpro in Burbank are now handling all sales.

Stuart has stated there were many changes made to the Ruby to account for the price change.

The Ruby 14-24mm wide zoom now officially works on the Canon 5D, with no vignetting. This is very exciting news!

To answer Jean, one new feature is a interchangable front; one with a M102 thread for filters and smaller sensors, and one front with cut-outs for FF35 use. Another feature was the addition of more internal bearings, with tracking good enough for 3D work.

Got to play with a second generation Ruby at Kappa today.

It feels much lighter that I expected! The gears also feel better than I thought they could be since there has to be a lot of tricks pulled to expand the throw like this (126°). The feel isn't the best but I doubt you'll hear ACs complain.

Granted it is not a very affordable lens, but, maybe you can swing it and your kit really needs a super sharp and wideeee "futureproofed" FF35 zoom.

It's got pretty close focus too, around 7" or so from the front element.

I'd looove to see it on a FF35, to see what this thing's really got cooking at 114° FOV! That's ~9mm S35 equivalent FOV. Am I doing the math right? 9mm?! Like the UP 9R! Slower, sure, but also zooms back to 24mm in a snap!

Stuart was showing it off with a big smile alongside an OmniRig demo. The Omni Guys had a reel shot on Rubys! I am no 3D connoisseur, but a several of the shots looked great. A few of them had too dramatic of a 3D effect for my taste, but they looked sharp as heck. I couldn't see a focus rack but I asked Stuart about it and he said they work well for 3D.

Looks good! Is there footage up somewhere that would demonstrate how the lens breathes?

Thanks for re-posting these. I love the bus at the end of the vimeo clip, and the "blend" test is brilliant! Nice work.

Yea the lines are nice and straight on everything at 14mm, that bus clip was used as a demo for Action Essentials 2. We are going to be doing more blend test soon.....

This is not to get down on anyone, but I've been looking at clips supplied by Redusers now for nearly two years. What's the point? Can you really tell by looking at vimeo how good a lens is? What we're all missing is a control similar to what was done last year by the SALT guys, who did an absolutely super job. I'll be impressed with Ruby or Red or Duclos when we do side by sides. Without a control, all we're seeing are ego trips (Some are pretty damn good ego trips, but nothing I would base my purchase on.)

Lol, ego trips? Forgive me for pointing this out, but you must not know what an ego trip is. ;) Surely you meant excited/drooling gear-heads filled with burning desire. Well, that would qualify some of us anyway.

The only one that could qualify as being on an ego trip aside from Ruby owners would be Stuart, or Nikon... Don't know about Nikon, and I am sorry to disappoint you about Stuart. He doesn't seem to be the type. He is proud, but not on an ego trip.

It should be mentioned you can easily pop into almost any decent photography store to check out the optics in the Ruby. The 14-24mm f/2.8 Nikon is a very popular still lens. You'll see what all IQ the rave is about.

About the mechanics, well there is only one way to know and that is to go check one out yourself. Upon quick inspection, and not being an AC, I personally found it well beyond good enough for the focal range. Pulling at 24mm f/2.8 on a FF35 sensor can be a bit tricky, but I still think that you would have to find a very spoiled AC to hear complaints. Not that being spoiled with top shelf primes is a bad thing... just saying.

The footage on the link looks good. The lens handles flares really well
