Definitely cool, if it works that is, and this was not only test Jason was doing.

Can it send TC via a cable to a slate, camera, or mixer ? I wonder how accurate the TC is (does it drift).

But if you have a Pola on, you might see nothing and you have to turn the pola to see it but mess up the DP's exact pola position. You could always mark it.
Also, an Ipad is so nice, it would hurt to see it laid around set like a normal slate and see it being beat up like that. Sometimes there's nowhere to put it down but in a place where it's going to be beat up when don't have time and must do some other immediate task.
I like the idea but definitely not a replacement for a normal slate. The little "beep" at end of the slate wasn't very loud either so if the 2nd AC was far away, you wouldn't be able to hear it...well, I guess if the sound mixer was next to him. But it doesn't seem to have the visual 'smack' to make it easy to sync up easily in post.
I may be wrong but just putting my two cents in it.

MovieSlate 2.0 (http://ws.pureblendsoftware.com/FAQs/10177/1/28/) iPhone version has decent features. I expect the ipad version will likewise be good. Can any of you offer a conparetive review and reccommendation?

I'm sure you can manage to get the boom in for the slate in most critical situations. In the absence of sticks, most of the apps offer a pulse frame or series of them for synch purposes.

Aren't the greayscale and color checker a bit pointless, given that they don't reflect ambiant light (only the iPads backlight) and will probably change a bit depending on the angle you hold the iPad ? So it might more be misleading than useful...
And also, how do you ingest the TC into the iPad ?
Nice link, Ketch, I'll keep an eye on that one.

True. Also the luminosity of the iPad could be a problem unless it is adjustable within the slate app... very often an iPad/iPhone screen will be blown out in night scenes and almost unreadable in bright sunlight. As noted already those screen are polarized so it could also interfere with another pola on the camera and render the slate unreadable under some angles... so it might be a cool toy but will not fully replace a good ol' slate...

Movieslate 2 is out today. Very nice. Have submitted a feature request already, though :)

I admit that it's totally high-tech and cool, but I think I'd miss that visual clapper. Check that. I'm certain I'd miss that visual clapper. Now, if someone could modify that iPad protector case thingie with a clapper on top, that would be cool!

I won't. Speaking as a post guy who has synced many hours of dual system audio, as long as these slate apps display a unique flash and have a beep that is only one frame long I will be happy. Too many times the motion blur of the sticks closing has caused me grief.
That said phase differences between slate and camera shutter will still be an issue. And i haven't confirmed that the flash/beep is short enough to work for us...
