I can't mention yet who is behind this offer, but I could know about a lenses manufacturer that is prepping to launch new glass offers into the market next February/March.
Succeeding the RED ONE release, with 35mm coverage. A T3 25-85mm zoom and two wide angles: 18mm and 10mm!!
I've been in touch with the president of the company and he has advanced a price of US $5,000 for the zoom and US $2,500 for each prime.
More to come next days.

I'm glad that someone will make an 18mm to fill the hole in Red's proposed set. I hope they can match front diameters and gear spacing with Red.
A low cost, modern 10mm is great news too.

PL mount, 100% cine glass design. We are their target, that is, the RED users realm.
Actually, they had been thinking to launch a set of fast 18mm, 22mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm lenses and they've been confirming that schedule for 2008. US $2,500 each. But the person with who I've been speaking with, he didn't want to advance any date for the release beyond the 18mm plus a wider/widest 10mm primes and the zoom. The first batch. Then later, the others will come.

Hi Emanuel
What speed for the primes?
M
Emanuel A.
09-19-2007, 10:41 AM
Concerning the speed, it was said but I'm not sure. It will be something between T1.2-1.4, I think. Frankly, I don't remember the right figure. This talk had place two months ago. Only yesterday, I could have the confirmation about the zoom + 18mm + 10mm release.
They were testing the RED and the 18-50mm. So, there's someone here (I believe) with the same information than I.

man... it seems that every since RED released its fury onto the industry
other companies\individuals have been sparked to create cost effective
products for the masses (indies)! This is a very good thing. :)

I was looking at the elites. I used them once, the glass is very sharp, the mechanics are good but not superb.
In any case, they are priced in Euro, so if you make dollars they don't make a lot of sense in comparison to the RED Primes*IMHO. (assuming the red primes can match them in quality). They are faster lenses but in comparison the RED lenses have the Cooke /i.
Maybe if you pay in Rubles they might give you a deal.

elite also makes 35 digital primes .. they are listed in the price list ..

remember any manufacturer can re-evaluate their price structure based on selling more units ... by this time next year there could be 2500 Reds out there and most need lens ...

I've been submerged with PMs yesterday and today. Please, be patient. Maybe next week, I may inform you with something more.
Disclaimer: the PMs are private messages -- this information shouldn't be public, OK?

I stand corrected: 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 55mm, 80mm.
But I wouldn't say that they're completely sure about this release in any way other than as the zoom and both wide angles (18mm + 10mm). I believe that they've been changing their scope since they know the RED 18-50mm and 50-150mm are reaching the streets. And the 18-85mm was delayed.
Moreover, there won't be RED prime 15mm before the Spring, at least. The Elite's 9.6mm is EUR 6300 (US $8,875). For less than that (US $7,500) you can have a zoom and a wide angle, for US $10,000 you can add a 18mm. Will there be better offer out there?

I hope not! But I'm not the manufacturer, I hope you may understand.
My only thought when I brought this information to here, it's why I've been changing information with some of you about options. And I think it wouldn't be fair for all of you, to keep this information with myself. Without share with my fellows of this community. When I know that now with the RED ONE release, a lot of you are committing with new purchases without delay.

Hi Emanuel,
Sounds interesting. I'm sure you won't be able to give details, but does this person or company have any other lenses out there currently available and if so how are they regarded by DP's/cameramen etc?
The price sounds excellent. But of course if the quality is lacking it's of little consequence. Please note I'm not trying to put them down, I genuinely hope more companies like this will lower the price of lenses without compromising quality.

Hi Stephen,
That's basically what I am doing anyway. I'll rent for the time being and/or go the birger mount route and take a look at lenses next year at some point. The 18-85mm sounds like a much better lens if it gets made.

Fine wine eh? They cost sh*tloads and you stick them in a room doing nothing for 20 years? :)
If I could I'd buy Cooke S4's. I simply love the craftmanship that goes into them and chatting to Les and Geoff at IBC only emphasized that. It's because of this knowledge that when I hear of lenses being made so cheap I know they must being cutting corners by comparison because you couldn't pay someone less than the price it's selling for and get the same quality. It takes 6 weeks to make a Cooke lens, if you sold it for 2500 that'd be $416.67 a week!
