View Full Version : RED meeting in London 29th Sept 2007

Hi Folks,

Just so you know, the folks that joined the informal RED UK user email list set up after our spectacular at 'The Couch' back in May have decided to meet up on Sat the 29th Sept 2007 from around midday till about 5pm. If you are interested in meeting other RED heads then head down to Dean St in central London, nearest tube Tottenham Court Road.

So far there are 6 people confirmed; but I'm sure with a little effort we can get that up to an even dozen. Cost of entry is a round of drinks so start saving now, you know those London prices are ridiculous! That's enough cash, to start a run on small, but well formed, Rock like Bank, so be prepared to form an orderly queue when you turn up.

After we have moaned about the weather for half an hour and the price of petrol for 45 mins; we might get onto less interesting topics like:

1) Evin's stunning music video footage and Shaun's finger pointing at the moon clip.

2) A London version of Vladimir's most excellent training day at The Beaconsfield Film School. That's a contradiction in terms BTW because - and this is for those poorly versed in southern geography - Beaconsfield is not actually in London. It's in Buckinghamshire. Still lost - never mind.

3) Playback on set that doesn't require limb removal, organ donation or selling the last few, remaining, working parts, of your body

4) Do we have one decent lens between us? Probably not - maybe we can all chip in to rent one for a day? How about a decent tripod/matte box/lighting kit/grip truck and all the other paraphenalia you need?

5) Is The Force real? Or was it just made up by someone on powerful, mind bending drugs; who makes quite successful films? :w00t:

All this and more; will be discussed, dissected, delved into, pontificated on and where neccessary 'speculated on to fill in the gaps'; using our new movie making motto - "Never let the Truth get in the Way of a good Story" - which has now been adopted by the BBC and almost all of UK daytime news bulletins and documentaries about the Queen.:shiftyph34r:

Well if that's not enough to get you robbing a bank and then booking your tickets to head south; then I think you have to ask yourself this question - if 24 men each with a 9" shovel take 12 hours to dig a hole, 9' wide, 8' long and 6' deep - how long would it take 3 young women to circumnavigate the globe by a single Yak? Hmm - trickier than you thought at first wasn't it?

Answers on an Animated Pythonesque Post Card please.

See you down at the Couch!

All the best, Phil

Ahhh it's pity indeed Martin - we'll have another one before too long I'm sure - as and when the first plucky RED user wants to show off their new toy - I mean Fabulous New Digital Cinema Camera.

I just love the Lego version of Camelot - best laugh I've had all week! Brill :)

Thanks for that.

Count me in for a Magnificent 7......! and an end to me lurking on this site!!

Magnificent 7 eh??? very significant number !

Fabulous - I've always known there were a few lurkers around. So let me be the first to welcome you to all things RED in the UK. That's a bit of an overstatement by me BTW - but you'll get used to it after about two years.:detective2:

I see you are number 1063 which is a real pity because; had it been 3 more, I could have had you with one of my terrible 'one in the eye' jokes that I'm so famous for . . .

Anyway - I look forward to meeting you and raising a glass together !!

Let me know if you need any more info - though if you google The Couch and Dean St you can't miss it - even from Bristol !

All the best, Phil

Excellent ! I know we've only just met - and please don't take this personnaly - but I feel I ought to comment about your avatar photo ID.

You need to stay away from the X-Ray machine and eat more vegetables otherwise I don't think you'll be long for this world. Either that, or move to Jupiter where you'll find a lot of like minded people, with the same skin tone and an appropriately named planet!

Hi Phil,

Just to confirm I'm one of those 6 yeah?!?!

Also, if the numbers end up anything like last time the rounds could end up being quite large, and being a bit of a drinker myself I won't let anyone leave until they've bought one... So just to note, could someone phone an ambulance in for about 5pm, 29th September 2007, Dean St, central London. :)

Cheers

Yes of course you are - there's me, you, Colm, James MS, Nick, Jeff B and now Tony M.

Ya see - that's what I like about you Paul - forward thinking - practical - safety first - and I don't want to sound boastful but I did actually manage to get an unintended trip to hospital on my drinking CV! Ohh how my wife laughed when she picked me up from Reading general !

Rather touchingly one of the nurses took me to one side before I left and quietly advised me to stay of the booze for at least 12 hours - which I thought was very understanding. Just go home - have a good nights kip - and then start again the next morning! Marvelous! and they say that the 10,000,000 pounds they spend on trainee nurses is wasted ? How so???

I'm looking forward to seeing you mate ! Really glad you can make it and if we end up sharing a ambulance at the end of the proceedings well we'll have saved the NHS a pretty penny !

All the best, Phil

Hi Phil,

Love to come up and meet you lot, especially after not making it to IBC and missing a few of you there!

Question is, do I have to make a definite decision now(ish) or can I just turn up on the day? Everything's a bit up in the air at the moment (hence the no-show at IBC) as we've got our first feature doing the festival rounds and we're trying to get a bit of last-minute tinkering done (never seem to stop working on the boody thing!)...

Be great to come and meet you all, but might have to make a last gasp decicion, if that's OK?

Silly billy - you can just turn up on the day. That goes for anyone. It's nice to have a rough idea of numbers just so we get a big enough table; but we don't have to be exact.

Anyway Dom, just forward your cheque for 100 quid to me C/O The Couch and we'll enjoy ourselves at your expense ! If you do make it I'm sure we can stretch to buy you at least a half and if you don't - well Weahh Hayyy !!

I do hope you can make it!

It's the yearning that hurts !

Lol, you cheeky beggar!! Wish I could splash that kind of cash around - I promise you'll be the first to benefit when I can <crosses fingers whilst typing - actually quite difficult>!

I've just found out that I'm getting flown to Helsinki film festival with a feature I shot (ooh, check me out!!), and am returning on the 29th. Not sure what time, but will be flying into Gatwick at a guess, so hopefully I can come n catch up with you guys before going home - at the very least I wanna grab that half out of my hundred knicker!!!

If I get in later than 5 (come on - you're not really gonna be going home at 5 are you?! - By the sounds of things you 'n' Paul are gonna be there until at least 3am!) then I'll be very sorry to have missed you all again!

Take care one and all - really hope I catch you all there...

Hi Dale,

You'll have to ask Rory assumming he shows up?

He's the only one likely to have a camera by then. The last message we had from him was reminicent of WWII Spitfire pilot in a dog fight.

"Gerry's coming out of the sun at 2 O'Clock - I'm going to end up in the Briney! Ahhhh" That's not ver batim exactly but you get the gist?

He's 'busy' in other words, so we may not see him this time.

Anyway, we all look forward to meeting you Dale (don't mention the rugby) McCready.

Best regards, Phil

Hi Mark,

Great to hear from you!

We don't mind where you've been mate! All are welcome!

We'll be there from about midday to about 8pm I guess. I'll PM you my mobile number in case you need to call.

I'm sure you can regail us with sea faring, underwater, daring dooo stories about punching great white sharks on the nose ??

No? Well we can always talk about the football (Rugby and cricket are no go areas I'm afraid).

I do hope you can make it after all those flight connections?

I'm really looking forward to meeting you and sharing a pint or two!

Hi Dom,

I'm sure we can all wait patiently while you pick up your trophy and supple Finnish whenches salivate over your film making prowess. After you've torn yourself away from, the recognition and adulation, that inevitably follow from success at an obscure Film Festival; you will be able to rely on your mates (that's us BTW) to bring you crashing back down to earth with a few well chosen insults - after you've got your round in!

I'll PM you my mobile just in case you decide to spend some quality time with one of those Finnish whenches instead of hang'ng with da boyzzz.

Sorry to ditch you again (I'm starting to worry that you're all going to think I'm avoiding you!), but due to flight availability I'm going to be coming back on the Sunday rather than Sat, so looks like I won't be able to make it. Bummer...

Hi Stephen, Ahem - the secret passwords are "Hello - you must be the RED people - can I get any one a drink?" It's that simple - you will be able to recognise me from my avatar which actually bears an uncannily close resemblance to me - because it is in fact a photograph.

I should point out that it isn't life size, as you would see it on your computer screen. And just to fool you I may be wearing a hat. So just look for a bald old fart who looks horribly out of place in a trendy west London bar and Bob's your mothers brother.

OK?

Just joshing mate - we're really looking forward to you getting a round in!

Phil Becque

Well as Paul said it's getting perilously close to opening time for us. At the moment we have about 9 people as we're minus a 'Dom' but possibly plus a 'Stephen'.

I'll book a table for a round dozen just in case a few 'lurkers' want to join in at the last minute. I've been doing my best to put them off and keep the costs down, but some people are just impossible to separate from their booze.

Controversially we could invite Taylor and maybe Kevin as well - otherwise she might get lost; and if she did - in this part of London - she might never be spotted fully dressed ever again - and that would be terrible wouldn't it???? Arf Arf.

C'mon on Taylor - jump in Jims private jet - land at London docklands - Stephen Murphy wants to buy you a drink!

Cheers, Phil

I don't know some people - it looks like the supple Finnish whenches won the day then Dom - all that salivating over your prowess has done the trick has it! Lucky chap!

Of course Dom - no one has told you the truth - they're all 7' high, have thighs like tug boats, take steriods on a regular basis and make Arnie look like a wimp - so be prepared to duck at a moments notice - otherwise they could have your head off!!

Anyway, good luck with awards part of the festival though; I was nominated for an award at an obscure film festival once you know . . ohh yeah . . I'm quite the high flyer . . . . tee hee.

I just thought you'd all like to know that I have just spoken to John Houchin at the NFTS , which is the most prestigous establishment of it's kind in the UK, and we have agreed to have a RED day; where we can put the camera through it's paces using all of the considerable the facilities that they have there. It was actually Paul Clements who suggested this a while ago.

We will most likely do this in November or December depending on the availability of cameras and some of the DP's and operators that John wants to get involved.

We have also agreed to make a RED camera available to some of the students to shoot their graduation piece - which I'm really thrilled about.

Anyway - I'll keep you posted on any more developments as they happen but we'll definately talk about this on Saturday.

See you there!

Hi Fergus, Please PM your email if you would like to be added to the informal UK RED USER emailing list. Actually that goes for ANYONE reading this. We have had a few problems getting a mail list togther; so please don't think that we're running a closed shop - far from it - it's open to anyone. Please check that your email address is correct as we've had a few submissions that have bounced.

If you are going to work in London/UK and are based in another country and want to be added that's fine by us. So please PM that email to be added.

All the best, Phil

I didnt make it either. Maybe next time.

Hi Folks,

Just to let you know the main topics of conversation that came up at the meeting yesterday in no particular order:

Firstly it was great to meet new London based production people Vito an Dale. Both young 'turks' full of gusto! Also marvelous Tony came along as well as Chris. Thanks for chipping in chaps!

It was also nice to see Rory pop in for a cup of coffee, as he is up to his neck in work. He mentioned the collimation problem that has affected a few early RED users. It seems RED were all over it and quickly sorted the problems out. Top hole!

Two guys were brave enough to bring their Mac Book's in: Nick gave us an early look at SHAKE and a quick compositing demo! Very impressive! Mean while Colm had downloaded the latest footy. We were unanimous in our praise of the clapper board loader, who appeared all too briefly at the being of a superb clip, that looked like it was shot on top of a mountain in brilliant sunlight.

One of the comments that came up as we were looking at the footy is QT's Gamma problem. Yuk! You would think that someone clever would do something about the codec wouldn't you?

I got into a conversation with Colm about monitor colour calibration which is a recurring problem for me. Incredibly he opened his bag and pulled out a colour calibration tool ! Top marks for being clairvoyant there Colm! .

The National Film and Television School day got a unanimous thumbs up by the group. Though Colm did point out that we should try and limit it to 5 people per camera and offer more sessions if the interest is there.

For those of you who enjoy a good laugh at your writers expense, you will be delighted to here that I got the best part, of a pint of San Miguel tipped into my lap ! Ohh well - it had to happen to someone. Fortunately it had dried out by the next time I needed to pay a visit.

And then to cap it all off; we were visited by, not one, but two 'Mysterious Travelers. The first had meerly lost her way and sat at the wrong table - fair enough - the second; who was a strikingly good looking and well made up blonde women, whom I assummed was either an actress or a model; actually turned out to be in the fashion biz. She bore an uncanny resemblance to one of the 'RED milk girls' and I couldn't help but feel that it was hugely ironic, and that her presence there, was not entirely coincidental. Those synchronicity forces have been hard at work again!

As most of you know we are running an informal, non exclusive, UK RED user e-mail list; where, RED users can easily contact each other. Just PM me your email if you want to be added. It's open to anyone who might need a RED in London or the UK.

All the best, Phil

Hi guys, great to see you all. Sorry I couldn't stay for long.

As mentioned to some, a great way to send money to RED is via http://www.ukforex.co.uk/

I'm sorry I missed it..:pinch:
I got stuck behind my computer again...:construction:

Thanks for the advice on sending the money.

Who's going to get the camera first? Could you let us know how it all worked in Customs :shiftyph34r:

For those I'd met before, it was great to meet again, and those I hadn't met previously it was good to finally meet you!

Thanks again for arranging things Phil. I did not feel so great yesterday mind you, and I had to drive a couple hundred miles! Next time I'm sticking to just coffee. :)
