In order to use RED on an upcoming shoot I need to be able to monitor both onboard LCD and directors monitor. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as of right now that's not possible. At least when I did a test yesterday the HDMI out over rides the port that sends video signal to the RED LCD. I'm trying to figure out a way to split the signal somehow?

A lot of this project will be handheld so the smaller RED LCD is the one I'd like to use. Other, bigger onboard monitors (with other I/O options) just won't work handheld (for me)... plus I don't think other monitors will display important camera info.

Anyone?

Better yet if the HD-SDI out would be enabled. I know the team is working hard on it all.

The "preview" hd-sdi is enabled and is what I used with the Panny 1700

HDMI out overrides the LCD???

will that be corrected through firmware or is that the final implementation?

All outputs will be hot in final firmware.

That's good news. I can't tell you how annoying it is that a certain prosumer camera (rhymes with pee-yew) disables one output when you use another. Maybe it saves battery power, but let US decide what to turn off.

Here's a sweet solution we are using now that will enable your needs until the final camera firmware is enabled. Also has waveform and other cool capabilities.

RED HD-SDI waveform monitoring function should be added sometimes in the next firmware updates (early next year).

Manny what is the "preview" hd-sdi? How exactly does that work. Will that allow me to send HD image to directors monitor while using the onboard LCD ?

Or does it mean that you can see both images until you hit record?

thanks,
michael

This doesn't help though. I already have a panny 8.4" hd monitor with waveform.

1. It's too big for handheld
2. I don't think the HD-SDI out on RED is enabled yet (is it)...?

I guess Manny said it works in "preview" mode, but I'm not sure exactly what that means.

That means use the HD-SDI output on the side. The HD-SDI output is the mini BNC connectors. There are two functioning right now, there is the video assist HD-SDI which shows the guides, etc., and there is a clean HD-SDI.

wow. I didn't know it was enabled yet. During RECORDING it sends a picture to both the onboard RED lcd AND HD-SDI ? Thanks.
Sorry to be overly clear about this.

There are two hd-sdi outs and one preview out (labeled "G" here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1119)

I don't believe the hd-sdi outs are active yet - I used the "preview" out which is another mini-bnc on the camera. It outputs 720P just like the HDMI. You can't have the Red LCD and the Preview out at the same time yet. You gotta switch between them.

Jim, is the final firmware you're talking about going to be available when cam #51 ships, or is it further down the line?

Hey Sharkguy, you know Chater?

I am just sharing work arounds until RED ONE is fully enabled in the near future. RED TEAM is very smart and the final solutions will please almost everyone. We shot a huge commercial project for clients Thursday with RED ONE cameras (pictures coming soon) on a technocrane. The Panasonic monitor enabled HD-SDI out viewing to the operator and simultaneous on set viewing via a cinetal monitor from the panasonic monitor and the RED HD-SDI out. Yes, currently HD-SDI out works on RED (Sept 17th build) but the LCD must be by passed. ie, one or the other. This will change soon per RED.

Hand held and steadicam are another animal all together. The current capabilities are not the final solution. Based on my RED shooting experience thus far I would say that my choice will be RED EVF in hand held mode for both genres (Fiction and EFP). If a director tap is required then HD-SDI out is the answer with a cable wrangler.

Everything subject to change...count on it.

sharkguy.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I didn't mean to come off as being dismissive. Any experience with RED on set is RICH with the kind of information that everyone is looking for. I'm glad your shoot went smoothly. Looking forward to hearing more about it... I saw your other thread.
