can I use this lens?

http://www.letsgodigital.org/nl/lens/nikon/standard_zoom/35-70mm/79.html

Assuming it will fit the Nikon mount, will it breath freaky or not be usable with a mattebox or whatever? I'd like to buy 3 or so nikon zooms to cover the 18-150 offered buy the more expensive RED cine glass that I can't afford right now.

THANKS!

You can use it but it's not an IF lens - and it's a push/pull zoom. I've got it and it's one of my favorite lenses. I was just thinking that I could use it as a kind of variable prime and just select the focal length and gaff tape the lens. You still have to deal with the focus protruding out and rotating. I want to put some kind of metal collar over the focus barrel extending to the max extention of the focus elements to cover it and to give it a fixed length. I have not checked it for breathing.

The focal length fits perfectly between my 17-35mm and 85mm

what is IF?

I was hoping to get the 17-35mm f/2.8, 35-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200 f/2.8 and be pretty much good to go.

if you make some kind of collar, will it vignette at it's widest? can u use a mattebox with it?

THANKS!

If I were buying my first Nikkor normal zoom, I'd get the 24-70mm or the 28-70mm.

While I own and enjoy using the 35-70mm for stills, if Birger pulls through with their Nikon mount, I will move to one of these other zooms, because they're both two-touch and use 77mm filters. They are, however, much more expensive.

Remember that the 70-200 is a G lens, with no manual ap ring. You'll need the birger mount.

is there a comparable lens that doesn't require the birger mount?

How about my 80-200mm f/2.8 ED AF D. It's a one-touch and has 77mm filter size. $300 Cheap!!!

And I'll throw in my 35-70mm f/2.8 AF D for $200!!!

You can, but make sure the 80-200 is the two touch version, if it's not pass. The 35-70 is great optically but will be very limited in a cinema environment. This is because it's a one touch which means you push/pull to do the zooming, this is not recommended for cinema and will be completely unusable with a follow focus or mattebox.

thanks evin. Why do they call it one touch, two touch? What do you mean "if it's not pass"?

They are both one-touch. That's my point and why I'm happy to sell them.

I mean if it's not the two touch (Separate focus and zoom) don't buy it.
The call them that because when you use these lenses on a still camera you can keep your hand in the same place on a one touch and still focus and zoom, on a two touch you move your hand from one ring to the other to perform these functions.
Here is a photo of a one touch.

And a two touch.

Pretty much all professional zooms nowadays are two touch.

oh, i get it, "if it's not, pass" Thanks for the info, Evin

Is the 35-70mm one touch or two?

Internal Focus - the 35-70 rotates and protrudes (but not very much so it wouldn't vignette with a collar of some kind... It would be cool to have some kind of metal collar/focus gear combo to fasten over it. If the collar extended just over the end of the lens (at it's longest) then you could use it with a mattebox. You would also have to tape the push/pull zoom at a chosen focal length.

Evin's right tho - since this collar doesn't exist it's not useable with a follow focus or mattebox

Ugh, oh well, Thanks anyway, BillG

So what 3 zooms should I be looking for?

Mark Mannschreck

I would get the AFS-Nikkor 17-35 mm f/2.8 ED-IF, the AFS-Nikkor 28-70 mm f/2.8 D ED IF, and the AFS-Nikkor 80-200 mm f/2.8 D ED-IF - if you want ALL zooms that will work with the Red nikon mount and the forthcoming Birger mount... any "G" series won't have an aperture collar! Maybe Evin's got some other suggestions??

These are a combination of what I have already and what I expect to buy, once I'm sure the Birger Engineering Nikon mount works as expected:

12-24mm Nikkor zoom f/4G DX AF-S
24-70mm Nikkor zoom f/2.8G AF-S ED
70-200mm Nikkor zoom f/2.8D G-AFS ED-IF

The end of the auction.

The current price is very cheap for this lens. I doubt it will stay that way for another three days.
