Here are a couple of shots of the Los Angeles skyline. Not putting these out for hard-core tech analysis -- just thought some might enjoy seeing them. The camera is amazing. Both shots used the Red 18-50 zoom.

Here's something interesting: in "moon to city" there's a very visible smudge near the center of the frame. That's what a (largish) piece of dust on the OLPF looks like. It got there during a lens change. Worried me at first, but it was trivial to blow it off with a hand-bulb air blower. Once I saw it on the footage, it was very easy to spot on the monitor or LCD just by panning on a solid field. I think I'll make a habit of doing that after each lens change.

Hi John,
Those are great... Thanks for sharing!
Love that view.... of the city, wow.
Could you post a couple of still tiffs we could play with?
Thanks....

This is really gorgeous stuff! Thank you very much for putting it up, it is inspiring.
I'm viewing it scaled down a lot...I need a computer that can actually display 2k h.264 in realtime :-)
at 25%, after adding a lot of contrast just for fun:

I want to cry... this is some of the sharpest 2K RED footage I've seen posted. Unbelievable! You can see the neon building in the second shot, and a moon that isn't blown out in the first clip. I've shot the moon before, but never with the amount of dynamic range I'm seeing here!

Gosh, I would love having enough cash to put that zoom red lens in my package.

I don't think they need any hard-core tech analysis.
Simply gorgeous...

Looks nice, but hard on my graphics card on the G5 to play it.. stutters bigtime. What are the minimum kind of specs you'd need for the Red and some of this glorious footage to play smooth... Maybe it'll be time for a Mac Pro soon enough.

2k runs fine (h264 and prores) on my macbook pro 2.33.
John, thanks for posting this at 2k by the way. It looks amazing. Like everyone else I'd love to see a 4k still of the city or even better, the holy grail of Red One: two sequential 4k tifs so we can finally see what happens from frame to frame.

justyn, a G5 should play this video fine.. I doubt it's your graphics card that's holding you back unless it has other issues, even if it's a lowly R9600. You may have something else -- another application soaking up resources, faulty QT installation or outdated software. Or an overloaded and/or really slow hard drive.
OTOH, if you have a 1.6GHz G5 iMac, then you may have some trouble. :)

Thanks for posting these! The footage indeed looks great. Some of the best yet. If possible, could you post a 4K TIFF or DPX so we can play around with colors in Photoshop?
Thanks again. Looks beautiful!

Was that shot from the Renaissance Hotel? or somewhere near Highland and Hollywood?

Some quick answers to various questions:
1. No, I'm not going to post tiffs of these shots because I think they're a little soft and I'd rather re-shoot something spot on before posting at full resolution. I was in a huge rush when I shot these as my son needed to get to a birthday party. I had planned on waiting until I shot something narrative to post at all, but these looked so cool I had to share.
2. I'm also not going to post these in 2k ProRes HQ. Maybe some future clips.
3. Yes, they were shot from up in the hills near Hollywood and Highland.
4. No filters were used.
I'm glad so many people are enjoying these -- as I get more cool/interesting stuff I'll make sure to share. And for the record, I don't at all mind people asking for more/different stuff -- if I didn't have my camera I'd be pining for footage too.

John,
You rock my world. Amazing.
I'm wondering what F-stop you shot these at. It seems like diffraction may be rearing its head on many outdoor shots.
Also wondering about what you did to the image in post.
I think you should consider posting the TIFFs regardless of if they are soft. Just give us a disclaimer. There is a lot of learning going on here and we learn more from our mistakes and our problems than from our perfect takes... Consider the landscape thread....
Anyways, thanks for posting these regardless.

thanks John, really cool shots.
Any chance you could shoot a DR type of test of a person against a window
or some such thing.
no hurry I got about 1200 cameras worth of waiting to do.

Jonh, you say they are a little soft but I have been comparing your 2K frames to a variety of 2K film scans I have on my server and they beat everything. But if you can get more out of them it bodes well for the 18-50 lens.

Surprised no one commented on the gnat that flies into frame toward the end of the pan. Crazy. The resolution could actually present some serious issues when dealing with nature.
Don't leave home without the bug spray.

This is really good as for 2K.
Some frames are incredibly sharp.
If you scan the second clip you will find some that I can’t call soft. This ones you could post in TIFF format. It compares to 8MP DSLR Canon with L lenses.
Did you shoot in 4K downresed to 2K or 2K windowed?
If it is downresed it will explain why single frames are comparable to 8MP DSLR
You can’t compare 2K native with downresed even after compression. Remember it is slow pan.
If it is not downresed from 4K then this Misterium is one freaking good sensor or Graeme is doing something with the demosicing really good or both.
Thanks for posting!.

Hi John,
thanks for posting.
just one question regarding the second clip "plane and blimp":
while playing back the clip i see a small change occuring between second 03 and 04 under the left construction crane - looks like a turquoise pattern or something similar?
Is it just the playback on my computer or can you tell me what i could be?
all the best,
martin

Correct me if I am wrong but the only currently released firmware can record in 4k only, the 2k windowed is under test (or at least was when that clip was shot). Note also, according to Graeme's posts, if you work with a 2k Quicktime proxy you will not currently get the best possible quality. Right now, apparently, the best quality 2k is achieved by exporting 4k and then doing the downrez in some external app.

Replies to questions / comments:
1. The blinking thing under the crane is a large neon sign that toggles between two modes, one of which is a giant bottle of something, I think.
2. I could be wrong about softness. I looked at a 4k tiff and thought it might be a bit soft. But I didn't use the highest detail setting in RedAlert (there's a setting that controls different modes of the de-mosaic). I'll play with it and post a 4k tiff for those of you who might want to play around with it.
3. At some point I'll create a 4k DPX sequence and use shake to render to 2k. That's supposed to be the way to get the best quality 2k downrez. If I do that, and the differences prove to be interesting, I'll post a snippet of that as well.

Very loud pattern noise in the clouds... just like a DLSR.
