Saw this about a week or so ago, and I was wondering everyone elses take on this new technology...link: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136977-c,hometheatersystems/article.html It's about the same cost as DVD's(players and disks) but offers 1080p Blu Ray/HD DVD quality(all except uncompressed sound)... I don't know how many of you feel, but I plan on finding one of these burners for my mac as soon as they hit the streets...btw...alot of people/companys have agreed to use this tech(some of the titles I found:)

just an after thought...although I see this being a more viable technology for the masses, having a blu ray burner makes backup and archiveing alot more simple and now with the new REDs comming, it makes all the more sense to have a blu ray burner...hmmmmm....

Yeah, Blu-Ray and HD DVD it is.

From NME's white papers their current offering is a maximum of 4 layers of 5 GB. Thats only 20 GB. They state that future capacity using 10 layers would enable 50 GB capacity. If they successfully replicate that on a large scale will be interesting.

Their site fails to mention anything related to authoring specs and interactive specs, other than their own upcoming authoring package which only supports standard DVD menus and only Mpeg-2 encoding, and no 24p support....

The VMD disc is basically a DVD9 with intermediate layers. I wouldn't expect any burners other than norman DVD DL burners....

The current downside to their tech:
Normal DVD lines are pretty cheap to convert into HD DVD lines, and the replication price, and turnaround time per disc should soon be close to DVD prices at large volumes, and HD DVD players should hit $199 this quarter.

Xbox Live.

Although I'm hoping they upgrade to 1080p and higher bitrates soon. If I can stream an HD movie in less than 5 minutes they can up the bitrates by at least 2x.
