Hello,
I was wondering if someone could shed light on the 4 audio inputs? On a recent camera test we were unable to access these inputs. I made a cable from XLR3F to TA3M pin for pin, as i assumed they were balanced inputs. There is no info on these inputs in the manual, for most post work flows it is required a mix goes on camera. Also we were unable to jam or read time code out of that 5 pin Lemo for TC, when will these be working? Has anyone had problems with this? Any word on how to get these to work?
Thanks.

uhm.... If you search the board for Audio, you'll find its not enabled yet in the camera. It's curious that the person who owns the camera didn't tell you this.

You didn't get the memo that audio functions are at this point, yet to be activated? On the red shoot that I did sound on last weekend, I just went "film style"...The slate was jammed to my Aaton Cantar recorder. That's the way I like to work anyway, no cables. The dedicated recorder will be better for sound than the Red is (even when the sound functions are activated) anyway (24 bit, 96.096Khz). For dailies I would send a wireless feed. With this level of image quality why wouldn't you use a separate recorder?
With the money that you saved buying the Red buy at least a recorder like the Sound Devices 744t (amazing little machine). :-]

Some pinouts are here:

In addition the power connector lemo is:
1 + V Batt
2 + V Batt
3 - V Batt
4 - V Batt
5 Not used (I2C bus to RED BRICK)
6 Not used (I2C bus to RED BRICK)
When I spoke to Graeme at IBC he reckoned about a month until audio will be active, so that should just be another couple of weeks now.

I'm sure many dedicated recorders are probably better than RED (who knows!!!) but I think RED is 24bit and 96 Khz. So with good mics and a mixer the in camera sound should be very sufficient, if not awesome for many productions. Plus it's a little bit simpler for post.

That's 24-bit, 48kHz actually (once it is enabled).

Red sound: 4 channel uncompressed, 24 bit, 48KHz
Yeah you're right, (I'm not saying it's shit) it's great for a lot of things (I may help develop a travel show that may be shot on Red) in which case I'm sure that Red's sound will be plenty good. But on dramatic projects, where the sound is going to be played in theaters, I've noticed that my recorders process the sound better than every video camera that I've come into contact with. (DV to Genesis) This isn't a bad thing, they concentrate on image. I recently tested Sony f23, number wise it's fine, but when I A B'd it there was no match between it and my Aaton. I have had productions use the audio on the camera because the editors are lazy. My work is on the line, so I like to force them to use the sound off my recorder, It's easier to garentee the quality of the sound that way. By the way, I'm in Brooklyn too (Carroll Gardens), when sound is activated, I'd love to do some sound tests with you, to see what it's sound capabilities are. Till then it's just spec.. :-]
