View Full Version : Selling your HVX?

2 Questions:
1. Where are all the HVX's going once REDONE starts shipping in earnest? Ebay? Broadcast store.com? Garage sales? Keeping it?
2. Is anyone interseted in selling their used HVX system now that you've got your red (or need a little more cash to finalize payment?) to a guy who's way down on the list?
By the way: I know there's another post similar to this already. Sorry to compete. The Wanted: HVX thread wouldn't let me reply for some reason. :pinch:

I'm going to be selling my setup as soon as I take delivery of my RedOne, sometime at the end of November. I'll probably put it up for sale Nov. 15 if the shipping schedule stays the same.
I'll be selling the HVX-1 4GB p2-1 8GB p2-Formatt Clear Filter-2 Chargers-4 Batteries-Brevis35-Cinefuse glass 1 & 3
$6K

We just got a few HVX200s, or rather we are getting the shipments this week, because we won't get the REDs until early March and it makes no sense to rent anything in an industry where they want you to pay $400/day for something that's only worth $5,200. Morons! If you were seriously that strapped for cash, you put it on your credit card, shoot with it for 3 weeks, auction it on ebay with the sales certificate showing it's only a 3-week old camera, and you'd get back $4,800 for it at least, so you'd have paid $400 for three weeks of use. It should rent for about $100 per day, that'd be fair. Maybe $140 with a few P2 cards and an extra battery. But nope that'd be asking too much.
I haven't decided yet whether we'll sell the HVX200s when we get our REDs, but I doubt it. I think we'll keep them and rent them out, or use them for behind the scenes footage, low budget projects, etc.

I'm beginning to get that impression too. Even though most people will be using their reds at the primary camera (duh) it seems like most are not too quick on letting go of their old inventory.
Although I love the concept of 4k, I do have to admit the recent posts on 2k windowed are getting my attention as well. The Redcode efficency that allows 20 mins of 2k redcode raw per 8GB card is looking far superior to any p2 rig our there in terms of storage requirements alone - even versus the new intra AVC codec panasonic is trying to push. Funny how that works... red invents a 4k workflow that creates a more efficent workflow for the 2K or HD world as well. Very impressive.
Thanks for the posts guys on the gear. I appreciate it.

I sold mine really fast and for a fair price on DVXUser.

I sold one a few weeks back... I think we'll see some more HVX's go up for sale from users here as more RED cameras get delivered. But I doubt the market will be flooded with used HVX200s. The HVX is still a viable camera and fits in a price range that is a lot lower than the RED. RED is still too much camera for a lot of people and/or their intended use.

I was gonna sell mine as soon as I got Red but then I quickly learned that it's not very practical at this point for EFP or (sigh...) corporate... that has changed a little with 2k being enabled and the longer CF record times. Since I spend half my time editing, shooting on Red for quick turnaround stuff isn't "quick" enough at the moment... When FCP is redcode enabled, that may help. Still the Red raw footage will need grading. Red 41 is reserved for commercials and music vids for me at the moment. Shot HVX today (and yesterday... and last week)... I brought the Red with me (just in case) and even showed it to the client. They ooo-ed and aaa-ed... then I said "No Red for You!" and slammed the case shut.

Red shooting 2K (windowed mostly) should do just great for corporate work. Use a wide zoom like the Canon 10-22 or go to a B4 or S16 lens for this... From a physical point of view, I don't see how this could be more difficult than shooting an HVX with a 35mm adapter. Actually, for a lot of corporate type stuff, I doubt I'd have any reservations about shooting 4K to RED drive.
But you're right on the current workflow and turn-around time. I'm expecting this to improve greatly in the future with direct REDCODE integration in FCP and more complete software tools from RED. It will also help as the industry begins to adopt REDCODE and accept its workflow restrictions.

I see a RED and something like an HVX working in tandem. For the talking head - blah, blah, blah stuff I would use the HVX. And then use the RED for all the b-roll. I was thinking I could dump the HVX but I still shoot so
many interviews that the RED (at this point) would be impractical.
I did rent a VariCam and Jimmy Jib about a month ago and RED would
have been perfect for that shoot. Just need to see if the Nikons will
cut it or not.

Yeah, I've been shooting over the past couple of weeks some real run and gun interviews with my HD-100 and I keep thinking... man this camera is probably way better than RED for this stuff. I don't think I am going to sell it. It's just one of the fastest shooting cameras I've ever used, it's looks professional and the quality is awesome. It ain't RED... but RED ain't it.

May not kenn, my Hillman Minx got along just fine with my Jag XJ-12 parked in the same garage.

I'm going to keep my 110U just because not all of my clients will be able to afford the RED (thought, I'm hoping that my richer clients will help pay for the RED so I can help my poorer clients (non-profits) with a lower rental rate and MUCH nicer quality.)

Considering selling it. But it's too useful. Lightweight, fixed lense, built in ND's. It's got a DV Deck, Composite HD out. SD Out. You can hook it up to a Macbook and run a video monitor off Final Cut Pro. I waffle alot. But when it comes down to it, I can't get rid of it until I've replaced all my clients with people who want RED. Maybe that will be easy, maybe it won't. :holloween:

It comes down to best tools for the job. I can't stand HDV but I'll admit it's the right tool for the job for a lot of run and gun stuff. P2 is a step up, but workflow can be an issue. RED might be better, especially with the RED Drive in 2K windowed or someday scaled 2K, it might beat some of these cameras for run and gun because dynamic range is helpful. Lack of internal ND's slightly problematic though.
