RCX2XML- REDCINE-X to XML roundrtrip conform Tool
version 0.25 - Mikael Lubtchansky
(Final Cut Pro only for now, will try next to make it work for Avid xmls too)

http://mika.nerim.net/RCX2XML_0.25.zip
or
http://foolcolor.net/RCX2XML_0.25.zip

________________________________________________

1. Export an xml from FCP offline edit.

2. Use XML2RCX and export to RCX timeline
(add handles here if needed).

3. Import lua file in REDCINE-X
.Grade from the timeline. Select all clips in timeline.
.Export 'Timeline (Selected clips)' to your preffered QT codec (do not use 'overwrite existing file')
.Wait for batch export to finish.

4. Launch this script, choose your original xml file and the folder containing your newly exported QT files. A new xml file will be created on your desktop. It should (hopefully) relink everything once imported in FCP.

------------------------

This is an early beta version, it's working here but certainly not everywhere yet...

If you encounter any issues, please email me your XML files.

If you wish to unlock it beyond the 7 first edit points, you can send a donation via Paypal to my email account (any amount over $15 will get you a code to unlock all scripts : XML2RCX, EDL2RCX and RCX2XML). I'll do my best to keep the scripts bug free and up to date (time permitting) :

Thanks for any feedback.

hiya
did a 10 minute piece yesterday.
it was cut on fcp 7 using prores proxy
shot 4.5k 2.35:1 aspect ratio

guy brought his project and sequence and FW800 drive with red files on
I got him to export a Quicktime of his locked cut so i could check back the sequence i made.
I Exported an XML from finished offline edit
used mikaels tools
XML2RCX to get shots onto redcine-x timeline
did a "best light" grade on each shot in Redcine-X build 260 (used histogram to avoid clipping anything)and exported all selected in timeline to pro res 4444 1920x1080 fit width.
Then I used the new thing (rcx2xml) to make a new xml to reconnect to the new media I had made (1920x1080 fit width pro res 4444)
It ALL reconnected fine in the "roundtrip" sequence the script made and matched the offline cut perfectly!
Played out to HDCAM SR and did my own creative grade on the davinci 2K+ no problems.
Resolve will probably be in my room in the future but not yet.....

I'm fine with AVIDs but had not done this process on FCP and Mikael's scripts made it a totally easy afternoon!!
just a bit of feedback...

here is an updated version that will work with snow leopard :

I am still investigating another bug where some clips (but not all) will not re-link back in FCP... please send me your xmls if you encounter this bug or another one.

Mikael,

My experience: Only 6 out of 20 active clips were relinked and brought to the timeline. There was no problem with the audio; it was moved correctly.

The timeline re-assembled well, but the rest of the clips (14 in total) were shown as "Media Offline".

Mikael,

The decompression fails when I download from the mika.nerim url, the file pulls down but will not unzip.

When attempting the foolcolor.net url, I get download times of over 5 hours.

Works for me just fine.

The zip will not decompress automatically, when I force it it unpacks a .cpgz file, and if that is decompressed, it unpacks a .zip.

It did unzip here too but just in case I've reuploaded it...

Mikael,

When I try to use the round-trip procedure, I get this error message: "Can't get text item 2 of "".

When I created the LUA with your other application, it moved all fine to RCX. However, I always export with the RCX option of rendering on separate folders per clip. This will add the suffix of SXXX to any subsequent clips from the same shot.

Any problem with this procedure?

Thanks!

Luis it should work OK with the render to folders option from RCX...

Can you send me your xml file by email so I can check what is wrong with the script... Thanks much

One point of feedback I'd like to suggest, for all of your scripting tools, is an option on where the .lua or .xml file gets saved, in the form of a dialog box that allows you to select a directory. The desktop is less than ideal for our circumstance.

Enjoying this RCX to XML utility especially, saves lots of time.

Thanks brandon.

Would you prefer the scripts to output the new file into the same folder as the original XML/EDL or have a dialog box appear each time you run them or a custom destination saved as a preference ?

I'm in the process of merging all my script into a big one now so it will be easier for everyone to keep up with the latest version of each tool and adding a few more tools (one will search all R3D from a EDL/XML and copy each file into a new destination/disk for archiving/transport) so now is a good time for feature requests...

donation request will go up a bit at that time (still at $15 minimum now) but all current registered users will be able to run the new 'unified' version at no charge...

Hi Mikael,

I tested you script with RCX 261 without problem. But then I plug the RR, and when I open the script, I have a bug (only the first footage is read)

Same folder as the XML/EDL would be the best default option. Maybe an optional button to designate a specific directory, but I don't see the need for a dialog box every time.

Thanks!

Hello

No, at the moment it does only support Quicktime files but if you let me know more about your workflow and how you'd like to import back the DPX into FCP I could look into it but I have never tried using DPX in FCP myself (are you using GlueTools for this ?)

Actually I was asked for a FCP-RCX-Flame workflow and I am trying to see how it can be done.

we have this problem with Aftereffects also... our CGI guys told us that they prefer to work with openEXR or DPX files because the performance is better then with RAW files in terms of render speed and playback...
I'm wondering that there is no plugin out yet to get a EDL into AE and pointing to picture sequences.... anyone know something?
Importing the EDL or XML into RCX is quite fine now and working great but the point is then afterwards....

if you have Premiere you can import an FCP XML, save it, then open the Premiere job in AE... i have used this a couple of times ant it works great... there are some things you have to clean up before you send it (slomo, Reverse), but it is a lot better than clip by clip
