what is the best configuration when using Red rocket Card and breakout box with MC5. Now that MC5 can read the r3d files thru AMA is the Red rocket a duplicated step? Should Red Rocket be on a separate system and used only for transcoding?

The RED Rocket will only be used for transcoding with MC5. but the benefit is that you're transcoding within MC5 if you want after an initial AMA import.

I think the best usage of the Card would be up to what you need it to do and how it would best suit your workflow.

You'll find that working directly with r3d's, practically even in the beefiest of systems is tough. 4k editing just really isn't there yet, and high end compositing and finishing systems at the moment are the ones that can truly work with it real time. Only NLE that can really toss it around a bit is Premiere with mercury playback. Rocket acceleration allows for you to transcode to all flavors of DNXHD at much faster speeds. And doing it through AMA saves you from

A. using redcine x or rushes, saving you an import step
B. allows for direct creation of native avid files via mxf/dnxhd allowing you to bypass metafuze which is PC only.

Finally, AMA also has the benefit of the faster, easier online process when you want to consolidate transcode to your higher grade DNX or even native r3d's, and send out for a finish. Lots of benefits for rocket acceleration in MC5 if you work with a lot of Red footage.

You can't consolidate by itself. You need to do a transcode which includes a consolidate as part of the process. Consolidate only works for formats that can be written as well within the Avid native supported codecs such as DNxHD, DPVCPRO, XDCAM, etc.

could you walk me though that? I really don't want to transcode all the full clips at full/175x. takes forever Thanks!

Copy your sequence to a new bin.

Right click on the sequence and choose: Consolidate/transcode

Select Transcode (In your case the transcode also consolidates)

Select the drives you want the new media to go to. (you can shift-click multiple drives if there is not enough space on one drive/partition.)

Select the DNxHD Flavor you want and Audio format you want.

Select your Handle amount.

If you have a REDRocket make sure your Debayer settings are set to FULL to use the card.

Also choose "Make New Sequence"

Go make a sandwich. :)
