Hi all
So let's say I'd want to show 4K in full glory on a big screen, what are my options at present? Projectors? Players? Not counting Redray since it is not here yet, and not YouTube. And what codec/compression would those players handle?
Thanks for any insights.

I saw Silverado has a Sony 4K projector for like $22K (not including bulb, lens, input cards, screen). Connect to a Mac Pro with Red Rocket and Red Rocket Breakout Box and you can play .R3D's in 4K!

Thanks Curran. Playing out the R3D's like that is only limited to when working on the project right? Or is it possible to use a MacPro with Red Rocket Breakout Box as a player for final 4K videos with audio as well?

Thats what the redray is for unfortunatly.

And there are no alternatives to it for now?
What tools/players are used to display 4K in cinemas at the moment? And can these be rented somewhere on the planet?

Yes there are 4k DCP servers that are on the market. Most 2k DCP servers can be upgraded and some 2k projectors can be upgraded.
Its quite a large investment though, and I don't know if many places rent them.

How about the nVidia Quadro Plex?
http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadroplex.html
You can hook this up to a PC with fast RAID to play 4K.

That looks very interesting! Is it transparent or does code need to be written specifically to take advantage of it? Price is very tempting also.

Answered my own question, transparent scaling and SXRD 4k Sony projector integration, gonna have to have a look at one of these.

Yup. The application doesn't have to support multiple GPU's. I do think you need to be running a PC with 64-bit operating system though.

Affirmative--we have a 4K projector at a client in NYC that needs to go to a new home.
Their facility wound up not matching the correct measurements for what they wanted to do with 4K projection, so their SRX-S105 with brand new imaging block is sitting in a corner of their place still factory sealed.

Torrey have you any experience with the Nvdia systems discussed above.
As an aside we looked at the S105 and it was a fantastic piece of engineering, anyone looking for a 4k system should look into it. We had size issues also so we ended up going for a different solution in the end.

JG,
Not personally--however I know it works since I've seen an Assimilate system push out native 4K using a Quadro Plex. That was a while ago, so I am sure the workflow has improved significantly since I last saw it.

Also coming out soon from DVS http://www.dvs.de/products/video-boards/atomix.html
I believe they are targeting pricing comparable with the Kona 3 from what I was told in a recent presentation on the product.
