MX shipping seems expensive

Howdy.

So we sent our cam in for the MX upgrade and shipped it off with FedEx - for a whopping 825$. Does that strike anyone as a bit on the high side??

anybody using another method for cheaper?

(not that I've got a shed full of red's to send in for an upgrade, but still...)

More info would be helpful...where did you ship from? What service? Did you insure?

If you insured for $17,500 and already have insurance you double paid.
If you selected FIRST OVERNIGHT its about double.

We use Fedex all the time to ship our Reds (full package in ATA Case) and its usually between $85-100 for Priority Overnight in the U.S.

No idea where you're located but it cost me about half that price to send it from Australia.

FedEx priority overnight for me in the U.S. was about $200 when we sent off for the MX upgrade.

Yeah - its the 'declared value charge' that killed us. The shipping itself is about 200 (from Montreal) - but its 600 for this extra charge.

"Digitalfx" : You think that our standard cam insurance covers shipping?

I guess I should have checked that out before sending it off!!

Shipping from Germany via Fedex Priority is about 300.- EUR with the full 17.500 USD as declared value charge.

I just became a big big fan of FedEx.

They refunded us the full 600 on the declared value charge.

There's another option that worked extremely well for the guys I work for: taking it across the border yourself, and shipping to/from the U.S.

If you are near Niagara Falls, you can specifically use a company called CBI
http://www.cbiusa.com/

Here is the process you want to follow:

Before crossing the border, go to any Canada Customs office and ask them for a Y-38 form (small green form) that you then fill in with your item type/make/model and serial number. This is cross referenced by a Customs Officer who then stamps and initials it. This proves you own the camera to prevent paying any other taxes/fees on the re-importation of the item.

Then cross to the US and find a Kinkos/FedEx depot and ship off your item to RED as a domestic shipping item. (waaay faster and cheaper)

Inform RED that when the item is shipped back to ship it to CBI and to include YOUR phone number in the address...

IE..

c/o John Smith 123-456-7890
1711 Cudaback Ave
Niagara Falls, NY 14303

When the item arrives at CBI they sign and accept and call you right away to tell you the item is in. Then, drive back over the border go to CBI and pick up your package, paying them $5.50 USD per package. Drive back to Canada and when you get to Canadian Customs tell them you have your old camera back from "repairs" in the US and tell them you have a Y-38 as proof. They may look at it there at the booth and send you on your way or worst case, they will make you pull over and go inside to show them and cross reference the serial again.
Then...POOF. Home free.
