We already have 4 analog channels :)

...so no digital audio inputs? Just curious to clarify

Dont really see the point of digital inputs when the Redīs preamps and convertors are good. Today even in middle class gear those things are quite enough even for music recording (=much higher standart than audio aquisition on a film set).

So when you are dissapointed with the Red audio you are most likely a candidate for 96 KHz multichannel recording on separate gear anyway.

I'd say that "when" should be an "if." Not that I'm saying they won't be, but who knows what will be practical in the space, budget, and timeframe?

I recently looked for a decent portable flash recorder, which I would think most people would go for if the Red doesn't have a digital input. It seemed that every affordable recorder was brought down by some different, fatal flaw. No preamps, crappy preamps, non-removable rechargeable battery, no XLR connectors, you name it. Blunders galore.

The only one I would consider at this point is the Tascam HD-P2, at $1000. Someone mentioned a $4000 brand in the other audio thread, but I haven't checked it out. At that price, though, it's a large fraction of the price of the camera; I know it's not that much in the arena of cinema equipment, but remember that the idea here is bringing "cinema" quality within reach of a new group of people. I'd rather spend the dough on a really great preamp/converter combo and store the resulting high-quality bitstream on the Red. But I suppose you need a backup anyway...

Whatever. I vote for the inclusion of a digital input if it's manageable and doesn't detract from the visually oriented features. Otherwise, we'll deal.

The published audio spec is 4 x analog via mini-XLR, no digital inputs.

As always, all specifications are subject to change....

Whatever delivers the best/highest quality audio signals...?

The XLR's will be running analog from the Mic's anyway, so there's not much use in going digital from a quality perspective.

yes.. analog outs is much more practical to the majority of users.. people looking for a complete digital audio system most likely would prefer relying on an off camera dedicated setup.

You mean analog in, right?
Iīd really have to stretch my imagination to see any point in a digital out vs. analog out.

....unless your cerebellum has clocked AES-in.

Even if the mini xlr's input's were menu setup switchable between analog and digital aes/ebu. Would you then need/want wordclock input and/or output?

Side question, digital reference related, does red one have tri sync input? And is hdsdi output timeable?

AES is officially self clocked, but Iīm having 99% less problems when everything including the Volvo and the espresso maker is getting wordclock.
Go figure.

If you went with digital audio input, there's the sync issue, standards issues, and most likely a D/D conversion would have to take place. Not to mention you'd have to have a digital mixer with digital out, and most likely not all of them would work.

Analog is much simpler and industry standard. As stated many times on this forum and this post, if you really need higher quality, record it separately on something like a PD-6 or Diva.

Having worked with the PD-6, the files that it produces (multi-track wavs) are not compatible with all NLEs. I know FCP and ProTools will take them without a problem.

I'm guessing there will be a levels meter that can be superimposed over the viewfinder or LCD? Seems like a dumb question but It hasn't actually been stated.

Yes, both in the viewfinder and on the LCD output
