Hi,
I was wondering what the RedOne with 18-50 RedZoom weighs?

I'm guessing based on previous info it's around 15lb + battery but correct me if I'm wrong. Wondering if a stripped down camera (body+lens+maybe clip-on battebox) could be supported by a Steadicam Flyer which we have run safely at 18lbs (Sony F730).

My best guess on the weight of the Lithium battery is just under 3 lbs (which would be relocated on the Steadicam to the bottom V-Lock.

I realize the whole package with Premium production pack, Red Drive, Battery located on camera etc will be close to (or more than) 30lbs.

Thanks for any info. Cheers!

The Red One with the Basic production pack, 18-50 zoom, Red battery, compact flash (so NO RedDrive), a follow focus and a 2-stage 4x5.65 matte box was 27.5 pounds.

The "crank" configuration was about 18lbs, but the body is at least one pound heavier.

I think this is how they shot the roller blading stuff.

Cool...thanks.
So the answer is "maybe" but doubtful.
The more I see the "loaded" configurations, the more I want as lightweight setup as possible!
The beauty of the system of course is how adaptable it is.
Cheers,

If you don't need a 1-2 hour runtime at a stretch, I have to believe you could save some weight using a smaller battery.

also there will be an option to put the battery on a belt ...

I stripped mine down the other day for some casual handheld, 18 - 50mm onboard. I used the battery belt, took off all the rods, mounted the LCD to a hole on the upper handle bracket and it was late enough in the day I didn't need a mattebox. I didn't weigh it but it was certainly under 18 lbs.

With carbon fiber rods and a light mattebox you might be able to make the Flyer work for you. Its close enough that if that setup is important to you, it would be worth the time to do a test.

Blair,

Thank you for the hands on information. It takes out the guesswork and is very helpful.

Gratefully,

David

Blair, Shawn: thanks very much..
I know I'm always being a moanie moo, but how heavy is the shoulder mount? It seems kinda big for what it is... Also is the camera big enough for it to be shoulder mounted without the rail system?
I've got to get it as small and light as possible, because I'm always flying with zero baggage allowance and walking for hours 'round cities looking for shots. And it's usually just me and the Director carrying everything (moan moan.. lol:sarcasm: )
Don't usually have "permission to film" either, which makes walking around lookin like a major Hollywood production a bad idea..:whistling:

Fair request.

Thanks so much Blair. I'm really glad that a stripped down configuration will be under 20lbs.
Truth is the Flyer works better with a 15-18lb camera than a 5-10lb HDV cam.

Check me if I'm wrong, but the battery power would come from the Flyer as well as watching the monitor onboard the Flyer. Other than the camera and lens the only other consideration would be digital storage.
