Hello folks,

I just saw some similar threads regarding the orders from different places, and I was wondering how many orders from Africa there are.
I am based in Angola, and I have placed an order for one Red Camera.

Are there any other fellows from Africa as well?

All the best,

Fidel.

Fidel, if I might ask, what do you plan to do with your Red? Nature/Wildlife docs?

Well Fidel, I am based in Toronto but I have plans to shoot a music video in Ghana with a local artist. I am also hoping to travel to South Africa to reconnect and do some music videos with some friends who have returned to SA.

So many stories to tell about the struggle in Angola.
Aluta continua!

Hello all!

Tom,

I am setting up a production company in Angola and I will be making films, TV series, music videos, commercials, etc... I will be renting my camera as well to a few local production companies.

Bro,

If you watched Blood Diamond, that is a movie that could have been made in Angola. I have been in the diamonds mines and I know how it is like. It is a nightmare, a lot of people die burried while digging for diamonds. There are so many stories to be told about Angola in particular and Africa in general. In the movie you hear Dicaprio mention Angola a few times.

Rosferatu,

I have just returned from two weeks holidays in Pretoria. I did not have time to go down to Cape Town, but next time I go to South Africa I will be going to Cape Town. I have a few relatives in Johanesburg.

What do you plan to do with your Red?

I enjoyed two lengthy production trips to South Africa in the '90's. Each time, we were shooting an ESPN program featuring world tour professional surfing events (ASP World Contest Tour). On the first trip the event was at Durban, but before and after the event we traveled around South Africa shooting creative b-roll of cultures, nature, etc. We went all the way up by Mozambique. On the second trip, the event was at Jeffrey's Bay, but again before and after the event we again traveled all around shooting creative b-roll of cultures, scenery, nature, etc. I'd love to go back to South Africa (and many other places in Africa) with a RED One camera system and shoot some 4k footage!

I also shot 35mm stills in Egypt on another trip...an awesome visual experience...

I'm not based in Africa but I do travel there a couple times a year - mostly docs & NGO promotional work. We have a feature in development that's set in Malawi, though we haven't decided yet on a shooting location.

Great idea, and maybe a "Projects" forum, where RED User members could share stories, frames, and clips from the projects they're using RED One on. That would be an awesome addition to RED User! (Perhaps divided into geographical areas and genres of production?)

The tech end of RED One is great...but then stories and frames of that tech in real world use around the world would benefit everyone in the RED community.

Sorry I know we are drifiting off topic but...

this will be great indeed, why not start it right away, red camera available or not, the stuff that shows up here with pictures from the bottom of the ocean to the moon are so great that I get really curios what people are doing with motion

then we could get into a discussion of what is really the best way to post video on the web, what player, quicktime, windows, or embedded in flash, what size and codec plays best for most users on this forum etc. then when red footage comes out, we already have the best solution for streaming it worked out

Hi, I'm based in Vienna now - after many years of working in Africa - but intend to put at least one of our REDs to good use in Africa. I think, there's plenty of stories there that need and deserve to be told!

So, where do I keep my titanium "R" ? In my Vienna office, when in Europe. With me, when travelling - i.e.; to the blue nile falls / Ethiopia some weeks ago.

Excellent, more Red folk in SA! Yes Scratch seems like the way to go due to its tight integration w/ Red.

Rich, do I know you guys from any previous SA film company?

Hi Bruce,

There is a growing (hopefully) digital cinema scene here in S.A. We have launched two new digital cine resources online, one at www.4khub.com and the other S.A. specific at www.4khub.co.za, please check them out, join up and get involved. They are community based sites, much like this one but a bit broader in subject matter.

They are somewhat blank canvases at the moment, but will feature a lot of information pertinent specifically to 4K and to a certain extent 2K production and post as well.

We plan to launch a S.A. international chapter of the digital cinema society soon, which will be a first for S.A., and for this we are working with DI Film Co in Cape Town, who are S.A.'s Scratch, Bright Systems and Bluefish representatives and distributors here.

Together with DI Film Co, we are really trying to push 2K/4K digital aquisition, post and projection in the country, but as with many things it is a slow process requiring lots of pursuasion to get others on board.

There are two big productions coming up that will be shot in 2K by a couple of S.A.'s hottest directors, one by Frieze Films, directed by Tony Baggert that will be shot with Genesis, the other with the Arri D20, both will be pushed through Scratch at DI Film Co, using the only Scratch system in the country (until we get ours...).

Our production company, Sentinel Entertainment, started in 2003, and has never been anything else, so I doubt you would have come across us before. We are pretty unknown even in the S.A. industry to be honest, but that is starting to change the more we get involved in pushing digital cinema here.

I have heard from Digital Film in Jo'burg that there are at least 20 full Red One kits destined for S.A., but I don't know how true this is.

Just thought anyone reading this thread that has Red's on order might like to know we will be launching the South African chapter of the Digital Cinema Society very soon! We plan to take the industry by storm in promoting and educating the production, post houses, and cinema operators alike of the benifits of digital cinema particularly at 2K and 4K resolutions.

So keep your eye out for news in the press soon!

It's cool to hear that there are other Redheads in SA. I'm a Cape Town-based filmmaker with a Red One on order, should be getting mine in January. I will be shooting freelance and perhaps renting occasionally, but I'm keen to become involved in pushing 4k and digital cinema in SA. Just signed up at www.4khub.com. Is there any relation to Cape Town's HD Hub?

Hi Caleb,

Nope, no relation to HD Hub. We have a South African site up at 4khub.co.za also which will have a lot more SA local info on it. Glad to have you!

I'll be sure to get more info to you on the S.A. Digital Cinema Society! I'd love to have you involved. I need to start getting some initial members organised so I'll definitely be in touch with you. Maybe PM me your cell number and I'll give you a call.

Howzit Bruce, I too straddle the atlantic, spending most of my time in cape town but a few months each year in my hometown portland, or. Ideally I'd like to just follow the summer (and shooting season) back and forth.

Rich, please just let me know what I can do to become involved in the Digital Cinema Society. I know lots of people here in Cape Town, many AFDA graduates, who might also be able to contribute something. I recently co-founded a production company (www.magichour.co.za) that specializes in HD but i work mostly as a freelance shooter, as well as the occasional editing and directing.

Well, it looks like all three of us are in the same boat. I was born in Las Vegas, NV, grew up between San Diego, CA and Worthing, UK, and moved to S.A. six years ago where I met my wife, so now S.A. is home (South African women are the best by far, they even beat California girls... the Beach Boys obviously never came to S.A.).

Yeah that's for sure! I lived in SoCal for four years and it's quite overrated IMO. Now I'm going on two and a half years with my SA girlfriend and there's no lookin back, she's beautiful and unpretentious. Anywho, it's great to see that you're building a digital cinema community in SA, and I'm going to encourage people I know to sign up and join in the discussion at www.hdhub.co.za, since there will be issues/limitations that will especially affect those working in 4k in this country (i.e. the misused digital projector problem).

Rocket
08-01-2007, 08:41 AM
Yep, digital projection is only the start. The infrastructure here for local d-cinema may take years to catch up with the rest of the world. The post options here leave a lot to be desired for true d-cinema work, there's SD, HD (even uncompressed HD is hard to accomodate in S.A.) but 2K and 4K forget it!

That's why we have plans on the table to open a dedicated 2K/4K d-cinema post facility here in Jo'burg. Real-time DI up to 4K, (although monitoring only at 2K), and two THX and Dolby Premier certified viewing theatres, each with 9m screens, one for DI (with 2K projection via Christie CP2000X and a Sony SXRD 4K projector with playout box) and the other for Pro Tools surround audio post (2K projection, also the Christie CP2000).

By the way, I'd love it if we could get the forums going and more SA people involved. If you have people that want to be involved specifically in the DCS I am compiling a list of initial members to send to DCS back in the U.S. so maybe send me thier e-mail addresses.

Hi - great to here that africa is represented here. We are in preproduction for a feature doc about high-life music to be shot in ghana and perhaps surrounding countries sometime early next year. It'd be great to get in touch with any local red users. We were there scouting in october last year and cannot over-express how great an experience it was. Such friendly people I have never encountered traveling anywhere before. We are also developing a feature narrative project set in the DRC and would be extremely interested in hearing from anyone who has had experience traveling or shooting there. It is amazing how little is known to most about one of the most important countries in the world. A country larger than western europe in which a continuing saga of brutality and exploitation has claimed at least 4 million lives in the last 12 years. Don't forget we all have a piece of the congo in our pocket (ie. tantalum used in cell phones - used in red??).

Best regards.

Hi, have an epic and scarlet based in Arusha, Tanzania. If anyone is looking for film support there, my company 4kafrica offers consulting and ground support there for larger productions. I also work a lot in Kenya but there is a lot of established filmmakers there to handle others needs.

It seems like the continent was made for Epic, Scarlet and R1
