Hi all!
first off: what a wonderful camera and a giant success! In Austria - as you all know the filming capital of europe and the rest of the world - there are 15 cameras ordered that i know of...
but to come to my reason to start this topic:
the red one is a wonderful camera and a decent replacement for most/all of the 35mm film work we've done so far. But that's the catch as well - a replacement for 35mm work.
what i mean by that is: i know 5 people including myself wanting to upgrade from a Z1/Fx1/GL. And here comes the new Sony xdcamEX - a much too perfect upgrade option.
I know all of the people at Red are working around the clock for the Red One, but as it's been rumoured since NAB there'll be a small version of the Camera - maybe the RED TWO. What will the Red Two be like?
What will the benefits be?
Better Codec (4:4:4 or 4:2:2), swapable Lens, Shallow DOF? Will it be a Handycam-style camera at all?
I know i know - no details so far, but to me it seems that a LOT of people are willing to upgrade their cameras now and the price tag for the Red One is either too high, or it just doesn' suit their need for a "all in one" camera. the HVX200 is a superb camera, but i can't hold up to the new XDcamEX.
So - in the interest of Red - please let slip some Information, just to get people like me waiting for the Small Brother....
Thanx...
p.s.: if anyone has some info and wants to send them to me with a promise of secrecy, pls send me a mail: www.krost-audiovisual.com (Jim, that's a hint!!! ;-) ;-)

Better codec? In what way? What's wrong with the current one?

He's talking about the advantages of the Red Two / Pocket Pro / whatever relative to the XDCam EX. It's always difficult to talk about this because you guys haven't given us a proper name for it yet (if you're planning on telling the world at NAB April, would you mind dropping a few hints here first?).
The sooner you guys can make a lightweight Red the better for all of the normal people in the world running around flying economy. I just flew from Johannesburg to LA and Virgin FRIKKIN WEIGHED MY HAND LUGGAGE - 6KG MAX! So I had to take the 35mm adapter off my HV20 and put it with my lenses in my "personal item" bag... I was really glad I didn't have a HVX200 or Red One. Also, I think I'll be going back to Air France for my next trip.
Anyway, glad to know you Red guys are listening to this small-talk but we wish you'd just tell us what lens mount it'll use.

Hi,
Bruce is right. What'll be the difference to the XDcamEX?
My problem is that i can't work with the title of "professional pocket camera". What size is Pocket? Does it have all the Goodies that a Handycam-style camcorder has? (ND Filters, WB presets and knobs etc. etc.) Or will it be a version of a camera body with mainly a record button plus swapable lens..
and what'll be the time frame? Announce at NAB, available in Oct08?
or even earlier?
Btw. the Red-codec is fantastic - as well as the Red one - no doubt about that!
thanx

Yeah, post some facts about the sensor it will use.

XDCAM EX has an updated version of the codec their using full 1920 x 1080 recording true 24p all that jazz.
I stopped by the launch today and it's really liked it saw some nice footage on Full HD projectors fiddled around with the camera did some focus pulling ate the food drank the drinks listened to the ASC guy that played around with it and told us why he gave it the thumbs up with his pretty footage.
Drank the kool aide? maybe but it was nice kool aide.

All I wonder is if the pocket red will feature a 35mm sized sensor or not...

I'm not sure a camera with a 35 mm size sensor could fit in the average pocket. Who knows maybe the Red team have abnormally large pockets for some reason.

To my knowledge it's going to be called a RED Professional Pocket Camera. They haven't released any information about it other than:
1. It's gonna be great.
and
2. It's not a replacement for RED ONE.
It's not RED TWO.
I'll take a guess and say I'll bet they are leveraging many of RED's key technologies into the prosumer market. So similar software but cheaper hardware. That's just my guess.

I don't think anyone was intended to work with that title. My take is it's just a thought-provoker "test the market" type pre-announcement. Red listens to the buzz about what people *want* this mysterious item to be, and go from there.
There are cameras with 36x24 mm "sensors" that do fit nicely in a pocket,

but I think it will be quite some time before the digital equivalent gets that compact.

hmm..
if it's gonna be a small pocket baby with swapable lens it's gonna be cool, even if a smaller version of mysterium...
but what if there's a fixed lens at the size of a pocket camera (for example like the small Sony Hdv's)?
It might sound strange to you, but i have a problem showing up at a client with a camera smaller than the fx1/z1 etc, for i have to explain why i use this small camera and charge them full price...
pls. this is not meant as critics on the quality of the product, which will be outstanding for sure - it' just that size matters for clients....
i'm trying to figure out where it's going to be positioned in the market - and ultimately if i want to wait for the red-mini, get the new sony or save some money and get the red one someday....
cheers

Jim also said it's NOT going to be prosumer...

I don't think I want it quite pocket sized - for client reasons and just being able to use it with standard dolly/grip equipment.
But heck, something 4 to 5 pounds that nativly accepted Nikon or Canon EOS glass would be great. So no fixed lens, but a system that would allow the next level down from cinema lens' to be used.
I would be happy if I could hack off the stock HVX lens and just use my other glass.
Of course it should be 2k, or native 1080P RedCode Raw and shoot to CF cards and have 4 onboard CF slots. SDI, HDMI video in/out for ease of transcoding, plus XLR Audio and genlock.
That is a good start

what about the time shedule?
presented at NAB08, released October08?
that would be a year...
or do they produce right now - and revealing the cam at NAB or even earlier with thousands cameras already produced?
i imagine that this small Red, Red-Two or whatever name it will have - will have an even bigger impact than the red-one, thinking of the millions of people using Sonys or Panas...(different market segment than the red one - true)
Still i think that if red will take too much time to let slip details, they might lose market, for many people are wanting to upgrade their 2-3year old Z1's
and the xdcamex is too tempting...

Buy the friggin XDCAM EX already it's a hell of a good camera and it won't break the bank like those damn HVX do with their rip off P2 cards.
