isn't this nominated for a VMA? congrats.

No, Dino, this video ironically came out the same day as I was nominated for my previous Eminem video shot for a different director, Rich Lee.

http://www.vevo.com/watch/eminem/not-afraid/USUV71001075

The Rihanna one was directed by Joseph Kahn, for whom I'm prepping to shoot a feature this month on MXs as well.

Very well done, what jumps to my eye is the very strong production design as well.

Christopher did you direct or DP this?

Awesome job mate... Do you have a love affair with Hawk anamorphics? :)

Please give me the name of the other Eminem video so I can search Youtube, Vevo is not available here.

Would you share how you did the sunset through the window and what kind of Fill you used? Would be great beacause I'm going to have a somewhat similar stage shoot.

I think almost every filmmaker out there loves anamorphic. I like different lenses for different reasons, but it often comes down to availability on many jobs. There just aren't enough anamorphics out there for everybody!

The other Eminem video is called "Not Afraid".

Absolutely love this video and the whole entire look and feel of it. When I saw it, I secretly hoped it would be RED MX and deep down I had a feeling it was (the slightly purple edges in the fire peeked my interest). Low and behold, its been confirmed! MX looks absolutely stunning!

Beautiful job Christopher!! I love the look you gave it with the anamorphics! High class indeed!

Congratulations!

Christopher, could you talk a bit about the post work flow that was used and what was it color corrected on?

Thank you,

Tim Duran

Very impressive. What went into the decision to go part hand held part mounted (or is someone holding the camera very very still)?

Christopher Probst
08-09-2010, 07:07 PM
The handheld was just to make the images feel more real and immediate. I handheld the camera on everything except when we did intended dolly push-ins or crane shots.

Martin Ubilluz
08-09-2010, 09:28 PM
Can you show us some images of BTS or your setup :)

Christopher Probst
08-09-2010, 09:31 PM
I actually came down with Mono the week before this shoot. I was barely able to stand and had to do all of that handheld, so I had no interest in trying to snap off BTS stills... besides with the star cameos, it was a no-camera set unfortunately.

I like how they used Dominic Monaghan instead of Eminem for the bedroom scene. They look enough alike that the visuals and story flow well but adds a unique perspective like those new Microsoft "Windows 7 was my idea" commercials.

Hey Chris, nice work man...hand held hawks + RED combo is no easy task, I know from experience. I recently bought this album and pleased to discover your treatment here. I like the path your carving in this particular video, the unique pacing and overall look...even for Eminem. Best.

Very nice work Mr. Probst! Luscious lens flares :)

How do you like shooting with the Hawk ana's? Which focal lengths did you use?
Have you used other anamorphic lenses that you could compare to them? We have a great Lomo kit here in Copenhagen and I wonder what the differences are.

I knew this song before the video came up and after I saw it the first time I wondered "could this be shot with the red ?" I love the image and the concept it fits the music perfectly. The anamorphic flares and those dolly shots outside in the field at grass level make my day everytime I watch them and motivate me to work harder to achieve this level of artistry and craftsmanship.

Chris Stout

This is some of the most organic looking footage I've seen from the Red. Well done.

Who did your color correction?

Lol that's the first thing I thought of too. I didn't even recognize him at first.

Well done man. Was definitely shot beautifully.

Was "Not Afraid" also shot on Red MX? It looks like it but I wasn't sure.

Chris, honestly, this is excellent. I don't think I have ever seen such a dynamic shot as the crane up on Eminem in the field. My heart skipped a beat the first time I watched it.

Wonderful, wonderful work sir.

So when are the Red Anamorphic lenses coming?
...and more important, please, Red, do not repeat the same mistakes you made with the RPP, which have great optics but the wrapping is .... not so friendly.
There are plenty experienced professional that can contribute from their knowledge, the same way Leica did with Otto Nemenz.

Great job, but whats up with all the fill in the house, and the 18K shadow on the high shots in the field? As Kieslowskis DP Slamovir Izdiak once screamed at me in a masterclass: Dont be afraid(of the dark).
Really nice closeups of Rihanna, nice fall-off!
102 million views...Amazing how many people can be reached, very few people get their work seen by that many.
Congrats

Can't really comment on the fill, since viewing on the internet is far from optimal. Are the letterbox bars even BLACK on the screen you're viewing the video on? If not, adjust your monitor and let me know if you still feel the same.

My 17" macbook pros glossy screen shows pitch black.
But thats not the issue, I can judge
if I like the amount of fill on all most any display. Its a individual taste thing, and not an right or wrong thing.
I dont dislike the amount and direction of the fill(top) as a lighting style, I just feel that it was not needed here, and did not serve the gloomy story.

I hope Google/Youtube give some of their revenue to content creators, cause 120 million - that's a lot of pennies.

Really nice work. Really like Eminem he does stand alone in my opinion. I haven't followed rap/Hip Hop since the mid-late 80s-early 90s but always find time for him. Lyrically he's spot on. The video itself is very powerful and despairing. Kudos.

Second video this year I've liked with fire. Really liked the How to destroy Angels' 'The space in between'. A little darker and slightly Lynchian.

Thanks Jarred, it is most gratifying since I didn't know while I was making this video that I was actually my second week into a debilitating case of Mono! It was extremely tough on my body and I had to take 4 weeks of bed time (and lost 20 lbs) to try and recover prior to shooting Joseph Kahn's feature film Detention (also on 2 MX Reds with the Hawk Anamorphics!)
