Anyone around Toronto want to meet in the next couple of weeks?

Quick informal get together somewhere mutually agreed upon.

Hi David, we are waiting for Morning's #98 to arrive, (Oct 15 ship date as of now) before holding Toronto RED-Meet 03.

PS will be hosting a camera test, and we will have RED-Meet 03 over lunch.

We could start discussing the agenda now though, and set the date as soon as we get confirmation of #98 being shipped.

Last time I did a count (TORONTO RED-MEET 02), there were approximately 30 known RED ONEs headed to the GTA (METHOD thought there were more).
That however was in the spring. The count may be dramatically higher now.

So, as David has also suggested, lets start posting agenda ideas for TORONTO RED-MEET 03.

Ok, item #1...?

Any suggestions on how we can stick to an agenda? The last meet was great, but it was really more of a Red "Hang-out" than an organized discussion.

We should try to make time for both social and business.

Lets try keeping the meeting out of a bar or resturant. Maybe one of the schools might sponser a lecture hall or even maybe carbon computing or somthing like that.

Count me in. Are you sure you want to do this at lunch during the shoot? Could be a bit hectic - haha. I havn't talked to Garth or Gregor in a bit but the rough plan was to try some color grading, comps, comparisons, etc. at Technicolor where I work. We could bring along anyone who's interested - perhaps for meet-up #4 - shortly after the shoot. I might even try to score some beer!

Thanks again to Ian and David for sparking this up again.

There is a great room at the Toronto Public Library at the Runneymede branch (bloor and Runnymede) right at the subway. I can hook up the room, if you wan to start talking dates.

Well, maybe not quite 100 but very very close to it. Hell, your getting one, Bro getting two, two friends of mine are getting one each Ps singed up for 10 and Sim just announced 50 red purchases. Never mind that Nick and Vint are already shooting and renting.

Bro is worried about prices dropping... I’ve been talking to producers and I heard some very disturbing things. Rates seem to range from $350 - 1K. If you’re lucky to get your camera sooner rather than later it's possible you might break even by the time the bottom drops out on the rental market and there are over 5 thousand Red one out in the public.

However if we are lucky things will stabilize around the 1k - 1.2k range.

Remember when renting Batteries that you might only get 1000 charges out of that sucker so be careful when you set your prices.

Method (getting pissed at the cheap ass producers in T.O. looking for a 1080 P work-flow) :pinch:

Ahhhh, does that mean no beer?

Actually, I agree. Be good to get down to some basics if we are to meet.

Also, as Method and the PM I got from JDB point out - 50 go to SIM so that ups the total sum. Though I would assume Sim's would be spread across Toronto, Vancouver and LA.

No no no! I'm not saying no Beer! I think we can make time for both. I like the idea of getting a room at the library or somewhere else, but we can still get beer after.

Boothba, I would love to sit in on some colour grading etc. Let me know when, I can bring beer or food or Whatever!

These meetings are going to be a lot of fun!

I'm up for UT as well. Why don't we all meet at Hart House or something and we can catch drinks anywhere after.

Just say go and I can do the Library, there's lots across Toronto.

Lets just have the have the meet at PS, since we will be there already for the camera test.

Seems we have a consensus that we should separate it from eats/drinks and formalize the meeting.

As of now the earliest day that looks good is Thursday, Oct 18th.
That date is dependent on Morning and Gregor being able to pick up #98 on the 15th.

We can start the tests at 2 (folks can arrive as their schedule allows), through to say 7, and then break for a structured meeting.

How is the 18th for everyone?

Hi Toronto Red'ers

This is a request for any Toronto Red owner that have an EVF on order.
Any chance you can get along to VF Gadgets and see what ideas they have for a mount for the EVF or leveling arm system.

Cheers

Already triple booked on the evening of the 18th (hate when that happens), but if you are doing any tests at PS with the RED during the day I can come by during that time. Would love to see how my Marshall compares to the Red monitor.

Rocketeer - bought a Red Eye from them a while back. These arms look good, but yes, they are a few bucks. Is the Red arm too short for your needs? The one you linked too looks good, but couldn't a magic arm virtually do the same?

The issue is to be able to quickly change the position of the EVF without having to un-loosen/position/tighten/check/repeat. Remember you have to do this everytime for even the smallest shift in position of the EVF.

The arm might need a floating mechanism that can stay where you put it (like the original basketball iMacs). The locks are needed but maybe there is a solution that satisfies the need to move it around quickly.

Ian,

We might want to alter the list. It has been suggested to me that discussing workflow is not something that a "pro DP" would be interested in, as workflows might be a bit of a proprietary Thing that DP's want to keep personal.

So maybe to be more inclusionary and to attract real DP's we should lay off the idea of "sharing".

But that was a fabulous idea you had, which would be of value to all of us. If pro DPs feel protective of their IP that's cool.
Perhaps we should reword it to "contributions welcome".

Sounds good Ian. I think to start out we should sent a clear message that the idea is to have people collaborating and forming a loose professional network.

I am a producer as well so it's also just good for me to meet new and talented people all the time. I am not interested in getting together to "steal" from each other. I just think it's nice to meet people face to face and find a way to be professional rather than protectionist.
