Wow! 72FPS, we have some possibilities here!

Not the most beautifully lit shot (all natural), but it shows the raw potential the best I feel.

Here we have a raw downsizing. Absolutely nothing was done to this clip except to take the downsized proxy and output it to H264.

Another shoutout to Ken (Chazmo) for the web space.

Hell yes! Looks great.

Do you notice a big quality difference between 4K.

Hey, fantastic stuff! Thanks again Shawn for sharing.

On another note; are trampoline's really fun any more? What with the safety netting and an inability to get your leg caught in the ropes? Shame.

yeah damn safety nazis.

thanks Shawn, that was a really good test of what 72 will do for us.

on a side note, it reminded me of the Man show on comedy central a while back, sans chix in bikinis

Thanks for posting this! It has a very smooth look. (BTW if he's using the lens wide open, it's not really the right scenario to be judging image quality vs. 4k, to say nothing of the rain!)

Nets and chain link fence shots look horrible in DV and HDV. This looks good, even when compressed for the web.

Ironically, Red is the best camera for web delivery!

I am amazed at 2k, and would not hesitate to use it at all. It definitely has more DOF, which can be a nice thing!

I know this is from 2k instead of 4k, but you didn't have to HALF the size of the online video! give us 1k at least!

looks awesome though, thanks! :)

Thanks for posting the clip. I wonder how much of additional post slow-mo
could be done without sacrificing too much.

Not to be picky, but I think you meant more DOF or greater DOF.

Cool Shawn. so THAT'S what rain looks like! I get so sick of the sun... and not to get too off topic BUT - one thing I've always wondered - why do I see SO many scenes shot in LA with overcast skies??? Are they all shot close to the beach in June???

Actually the leaves haven't turned yet. The trampoline was dirty from a month or so of non-use but I didn't want it cleaned off, I wanted the debris to bounce.

Looks great, Shawn!

What time of day was this shot?

About 2pm, but it was heavily overcast and raining.

Thank you for showing your films, it makes the wait less painfull !
But I wonder what difference if the shutter was just plain1/48 or 1/50 ?
Did you try ? With this type of move ?

Michael Ragen
10-01-2007, 04:26 PM
You couldn't shoot with a 1/48th or 1/50th shutter at 72 frames per second because the exposure time would be longer than a frame lasts. A 180 degree shutter at 72fps would be 1/144.

Shawn - great clip.

Couple of questions: How did you get 72fps? I was under the impression that the initial release cameras were not shooting above 30fps yet.

What were you recording to? I'm thinking you have a RAW port recording to RED drive. Please correct me if I'm wrong. In fact I'm hoping I am wrong and you magically recorded it on CF - that would make my day!

Cheers

You are correct. Jim Jannard is my friend :-). I am using a pre-release Beta and reporting directly to Jim and Jarred for my customer support (They rock the house!).

Happily, you are wrong. I don't even own a RAW port. I was recording 2k @ 72fps to CompactFlash card.

72fps slow-mo... 2k resolution... jumping on a trampoline... in the rain...

Am I the only one who thinks Shawn is nuts for not having a girl in a bikini as the subject of this video? :)

Just kidding -- thanks for all the footage samples you guys are churning out! It almost makes the RED-deprived jealousy subside.

...Almost.

Shawn nice 72fps stuff. If you have the time a shot of someone running past camera would be great. Even better would be if you could ramp it in post so that just as the person nears the camera they ramp to the 72fps. Even the tramp shot ran at real speed and then ramped to 72fps would be really good to see.

OK, I just had to do it since it came up in that other 72fps thread...

OFlow retiming of the jumping clip to 40% speed -- the equivalent to shooting at 180fps. It stretched the clip out to over a minute, but I just rendered out the first 30sec. Results for motion aren't too bad considering I'm working with a web compressed 512x288 clip to start with. I'd really like to get my hands on some full-rez clips to play with and play with some ramping and other effects.

oooh, very interesting Jeff. I was wondering what interpolated slo-mo would look like from Red slo-mo when ran through an app like 'twixtor' or something. You can see some pixel warping going on but that fence must be causing havok for it's algorithms :-)

Once 100fps is enabled, this should help futher with minimizing distortions.

thanks for posting.

Jeff Kilgroe
10-02-2007, 08:09 AM
This is just a basic retiming done in Motion 3.. Other tools like Twixtor should produce superior results with enough hand-tweaking. It didn't show in this render, but I was seeing it in the preview, in the later half of the clip, when the kid tucks up into a ball, the o-flow interpolation breaks down and there's severe distortion and blending. Overall, I still think the results are impressive considering the low-res source being used.

I'm eager to do some real serious tests, ramping effects, etc.. With Shake, Twixtor and other software... But before I get too serious, I'll wait for the public release of REDCINE and some native RED clips.

A lot could be cleaned up in this example by creating vector outlines of certain elements in the scene, like the leaves, and establishing motion targets, obscuring objects (safety fence), etc...

Jeff and Shawn,

This footage is very very exciting. And think of this, if 2K scaled @ 60fps works out well, then we'd be set for 120 frames with no trouble using Jeff's technique.

This is a very, very big deal guys. Good work!

Interestingly, this clip has turned into a good demo clip for me to show people how footage originating in 2k can be really good for the web. I show them how the netting doesn't distort even though the clip is so small.

Let's see that 2k version, Shawn... :shiftyph34r:

I'm dying to see the HD version of this QT reference file we've been looking at... even if it's only 720p.

And, I might as well jump on the bandwagon of CC-ing since I haven't done it to anyone's work yet:
