View Full Version : So what is "Side-by-Side" anyway?

I always assumed Side-by-Side (HD) meant a 3840 x 1080 image like this:

Option A

Instead, my new Panasonic TC-P50VT25 50" monitor wants this 1920 x 1080 format:

Option B

That confuses me because I was told this monitor was full HD resolution in 3D, when essentially the resolution is halved by the input format. What gives?

I've seen Option A offered as a real 3D footage format, which further adds to the confusion.

So, which is the "official" Side-by-Side format?

Thanks,
Phil

Phil

The sets are anamorphically compressing two frames into one.
The set will then unsqueeze them sending the correct 3D frame sequential format.

Side by side is half the resolution. Passive monitors that use xpol are also currently cutting the rez in half.

Right now the only way to have full rez 1080p is to use the blu ray mega frame spec through HDMI1.4. thats the 1920x2160+45 black lines frame size that can be encoded to Blu-Ray. In this mode your Panasonic is full HD.
