Finally found a case today that fits my fully built Red (mattebox, follow focus, rails, grips, etc) without breaking anything down (except for removing the battery)... I went in to get the portabrace quickdraw CC-HD1 (the largest quickdraw). The I don't know where they got their interior measurements from but it was only 9 inches wide NOT 12. I love the Red Branded Laser Cut Pelican case but I really needed something for around town with faster access and decent protection. The KATA banana 3.

Hi Manny... the info and pics that you just posted are supremely helpful. Thank you very much for taking the time. This along w/ Gibby's Tamrac backpack set up takes care of all my needs... for now.
Manny, how much does that rig weigh in the Kata bag... around 25lbs sans batts?
Cheers-- Andrew

Manny,
do you want to sell your Pelican?
No thanks! It's the only way I'd put it on a plane or ship it.

What FF is that?
What Chroziel MB is that?
What model Pelican cases?
Thanks

That's very interesting. I have the large Red Pelican case, but have a similar need for compact transport.
I was thinking about buying the Pelican 1510 for the body and lens as a carry on solution -- checking the RED Pelican case through with batt's, rails, etc.
Would you feel comfortable using this KATA in the overhead? Is it cushioned enough?

Mattebox is CBH-S16 - CF-MB/ST
uses one 4X4 and one 4X5 (or second 4X4) and covers 18mm on the Red zoom. * reversed 100mm insert ring so the ring fits INSIDE the lens pretty well.
The Pelican is the 1620 with custom laser cut foam -
The follow focus is Red Rock (works but had to remove one "claw" from Red PL mount)

It's 48 LBS! (with basically everything that goes in the Pelican - i.e. three batteries, charger, etc) and 40LBS minus 3 batteries and charger... not light by any means

They offered us the Red branded cases at Red Day - I got the very last one. I don't know if they'll make any more. The other case is the KATA banana 3 (I bought it at EVS)

Sorry but I don't think there is any way that they're gonna let me on a plane with that! It's roughly 27"long X15" wide X13" tall - (and 50lbs) it's not a soft case like my portabraces... it's pretty rigid

Sweet Jesus Manny!
Kinda defeats the quickdraw. I am anxious to see what items Jim has up his sleeve to config lighter weight handheld rigs...
Thanks Manny

Thanks Manny Yeah but it's given me a reason to get BUFF - It's heavy but it still serves the purpose of not breaking every little tiny part down... In fact, it's not broken down at all (except for detaching the battery which I think I can remedy with the Red Quickplate)

Manny, can you give us the sizes of the camera rig in the Kata bag? How long, wide and tall is the rig including lens, mattebox and top handles?
Nice pix! Very interesting.

Manny, could you do us a favour.
What is the weight of this assembled rig with a battery but without the charger or Kata bag? We're discussing fluid head sizes here (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=97399&postcount=88) so it'll be a big help.
Cheers,

Did I get it right, KATA banana 3 is 48 lb?! or the Pelican case on the last two pictures is 48lb?
What is the weight of the soft case with what you show on the picture one from your post #1, please?

48lbs when loaded. It's about 10lbs when empty. Just go to the Kata website to see the details...

Many of these kinds of bags have a hard inner polyethylene shell. I know a lot about the subject because I'm getting cases engineered to sell on my site right now for lighting gear. We're doing a cordura nylon exterior, thick and hard polyethylene shell (about 3/8"), inner thick foam lining and finally soft synthetic inside lining on top of that. That's for lighting but I wonder if it's possible to make a soft case version that's just as good as a pelican case for protecting something super delicate like a camera.

Manny, sorry, I don't follow. "remove one "claw" from Red PL mount"?

Manny, sorry, I don't follow. "remove one "claw" from Red PL mount"?
In order to slide the RR follow focus back enough to meet the geared focus on the 18-50, I had to remove one of the protruding "claws" on the PL mount as pictured below...

Thanks! Manny
So Kata is 10lb and rig is 30lb this is more that I expected.
I have seen 5lb cases, hard plastic.
Is Kata bag hard enough on each longer side of it to protect the camera?
