Folks,
We've blogged up the procedures for renting #20 or #21 on our blog here:
Red #20 and #21 Rental Procedures (http://silveradosys.blogspot.com/2007/10/red-one-rental-procedure.html)
We've tried to streamline the process as much as possible. Get the app, send it in, then we pencil dates.
Speaking of dates, our availability calendars are also posted on the blog entry. As there are two cameras, there are two different calendars.
Pricing is listed in black and white on the first sheet of the PDF available on the blog. Complete gear list is on the same page.
Please keep in mind there are already two features for which the cameras are spoken for in mid to late November--if you would like to rent one (or both) please check the calendars as soon as possible so we can make arrangements for you.

Torrey:
Mind if we "borrow" extensively from your procedures, I doubt if we would really breaking any copyright laws but I like to respect people's work effort and ask.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
Fine by me! It would be an honor to start some sort of precedent here.

Torrey,
I'd like to offer my deepest thanks.. I've been somewhat in the dark as to where to begin on RED in terms of Rental policies and especially prices. This is a subject I would love to get into, but I do not feel comfortable discussing this in public, and I think there may be some legal issues to it also. Nevertheless, it's a big help. Thanks!

Torrey, thanks for your well thought out rental sheet, I too hope I can help make this style the standard by which Red cameras across the world should be rented.
Cheers,
Paul

Jay, unless there is an attempt to fix prices, there shouldn't be any legal issues. And if even if we all were incessantly discussing the same prices, the influx of 2500 cameras within six months (effectively at least doubling the number of high end digital cinema cameras in the world) and distributed among hundreds of freelancers, individual businesses, etc., makes the idea of price fixing a stretch.
Discussing policies to protect against theft, abuse, neglect, etc. doesn't even get close to the line.

Then I would very much like to discuss pricing amoung the soon to be owners!
Jay
For instance, I am seeing a lot of changes from the standard 3-day week. Also charging for DIT service is a little tough.

Hi Jay,
When there are 2500 cameras out there you may start seeing 3 day months.

2 day weeks is normal for most lighting and grip rentals. 3 day on camera department is fairly common too. I haven't seen a 4 day week yet.
Myself, I really can't imagine renting from an owner/operator type unless that was the only way that I could get access to something. There are just too many really good rental houses that have fully staffed techs and backups for anything that fails to consider anything less. While I appreciate that a package might be cheaper than ala carte, I still like to have options depending upon what the job calls for.
I will be really curious to see how rentals work out for everyone.
Thanks for posting your requirements and regulations.

By the time it gets to months, nearly everything is negotiated. The last long term rental that I was involved in was just over 3 weeks. I think the producer got the camera package for just under 5x the day rate.

Hi,
How many news stations work with beta SP, DVX, HVX.
Red is a very different beast IMHO, not everybody has the workflow in place.
If Red has the impact on those markets, then you sure will see 3 day months on betaSP, DVX, HVX, sony 500 series etc! It's an interesting time, currently only 50 cameras delivered yet those owners don't seem to be fully booked.

Yep I agree Stephen. like you mention only 50 cameras currently out and there is tons of ability to rent at very cheap prices already. People that don't already have the contacts and work in place are going to lose their shirts if they thought owning a red would mean a big pay day. I am buying one to do the work I already get.

I think you'll be owning one a lot sooner than you expected!
