At first I held back until the CF hardware was fixed so I would not need to return the camera get it fixed, then there was a bit of a delay until the parts came in.

I need to make some deal with the camera package ASAP, so please send offers of any kind to joe@gamersden.com. I will take the best offer I receive.

Hi Joe
You may have better luck selling the camera. There seem to be people interested in buying and while there are still a very limited number of cameras out (50) I think you will probably make your money back or even possibly make $500-$1,000 dollars. I personally am fearful of any companies early run products (cars, computers etc.) thus why I waited for the 900's before ordering.
Thing with renting right now suprisingly with only 50 cameras available the rental market already seems flooded. Thing is there are not a whole lot of companies willing to take the chance on a Red shoot. When I posted a Red camera hire needed for a three day commercial I got people willing to work and rent their camera for very cheap. The camera and owner were choosen by the production company because of his experience and knowledge. After he was choosen though I still got people contacting me willing to rent their camera for very very cheap. The cheapest quote was $250 a day including the camera and person working as a DIT and he also wanted his flight and hotel paid for. This was one of other very cheap rental offers and there are only 50 cameras out. Can you imagine what rental prices will be when there are 500 - 1,000 or 3,000 cameras available?
If people don't already have experience, contacts and work lined up they will make next to no money with the camera. I know of a few people that have not yet ordered and are thinking that they will wait a few months until e-bay is full of reds selling for $11,000 to 15,000.

I think that would probably be right. I have heard that Red plans to have 5,000 to 10,000 cameras out in the market by the end of 2008. I could see many desperate owners willing to dump a camera for $10,000 or less at that point.
I am starting to think that your thoughts on an e-bay red purchase may be the smartest way to buy one.

Hi Finner,
Once 10,000 cameras are sold I expect a 'New Super Red' will be released, for a lower price than the old model. Having owned DSLR's that's what one would expect.

Are you serious?? $250/day for camera including DIT?!?!
These people should be shot. This is not good...I think even repeating this ridiculously low rate is dangerous. I'm sure a lot of producers searching these boards (ready to rent or hire owner/operators).
An experienced DIT alone is $500-750/day are they not?
edit: by shot of course I mean shot on Film:-)

While I agree with your expectation that used REDONE's will eventually sell for big discounts on Ebay, I'd bet there are plenty of people out there who would pay considerably more than $1000 to jump the line right now. Hell, RED might be interested in buying the camera back at a small loss. For all I know, they could be taking a big hit on each unit at the current price.
Pop that pig on Ebay and let's find out.

Wow, I didn't know that. Perhaps the seller had no credibility. The only REDONE auction I knew of was the one a few weeks back that was terminated early.

Actually, looks like nobody even chimed in at $17.5K
Then again, anybody who sends $5 grand to a stranger in advance of an estimated delivery date should be institutionalized.
Totally different story if we know who the seller is, the reservation #, and it probably wouldn't hurt to actually possess the camera (pictures are a must). In other words, I'm not going to base the street value of a REDONE on that auction.
EDIT: It just struck me that I sent $1750 to "a stranger in advance of an estimated delivery". Addendum... "unless the stranger happens to be a billionaire"

Hi,
I thought there was a bid of $17,500 the seller would have had to cancel that bid when he ended the auction early.
As he canceled it probably was legit.

Hi,
Yes, and how experienced is a RED DIT!
Stephen
Yes, this will be interesting....I still get calls
from frantic HVX200 owners who have not
figured out how to dump P2 cards.
Today I got a call from a producer wanting
me to drop everything and show up on his
set to edit. I would have but I was shooting something else.
This can be some real bread & butter. Get good at
DITing for a RED and you could make money
training people how to do it. I think the prime DIT
candidate would include people who are editing now.
I have picked up many editing jobs because I was DITing
on HVX shoots. Most producers I edit for are cool with that.
Of course you have to set-up your boundries. Some producers
are always paranoid pricks and I would not dream of
crapping in their mess kit.
But really, before you run out with your shiny new RED,
know what the hell you are doing when that CF card fills up.
And if you get too frustrated I will be on the look-out for
your RED package on e-bay.:holloween:

Jim has mentioned a few times that he is a bussiness man and that he is doing quite well on this venture. Jim is not the camera fairy. Really take a little time and figure it out.
Red- 15-30 full time employee's.
$25,000 average purchase of red package (rough amount)
1,000 cameras sold = 25million
2,000 cameras sold = 50million
3,000 cameras sold = 75million
You don't have to be a bussiness major to see that there is some serious profit to be made.
