There is an odd lens flare on this footage of the sun in the forest. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Rocketeer - just in the nick of time! All lovely stuff - I especially like the car logo at the end.
Question: do you have any thoughts on the shot #4: the chroma changes in the highlights as the focus is racked back and forth. Was that something to do with the grade or is that in your RAW file. Just curious.
Thanks again.

Hi Rocketeer,
Can you explain your process of grading this footage? It looks pretty different than most other RED-originated material I have seen thus far.
Also, have you done any tests with the 18-50 lens?

Seeing this footage just makes me wish i could see it on a 2k display or some red projected in 4k (Not likely to happen any time soon.)
Especially after the XDCAM seminar which had some really nice footage which I guess was just displayed on better monitors than my 17 inch powerbook display.

These are very pretty shots, and nicely graded. I have added this file to my RED movie mirror: http://www.bealecorner.org/red/
I notice the the H.264 files play at 25 fps, while most of what's been posted so far plays back at 24 fps. Was it actually recorded at 25, or is it a 4.2% speedup?
Craig W. Bickerstaff

It was probably shot at 25fps knowing NZL crews the limited way that I do.

Shot at 25fps
Graded on baselight. Unfortunately I have not had a catch up meeting with the post team. They don't take my calls anymore. Apparently asking where your quicktimes are 5 times a day, 5 days a week annoys them.

I met Paul L from images&sound at the HD seminar in Wgtn last week. He said "email me if you don't see the Red 23 footage online by the weekend"... but I refrained from hassling him further. :)
Anyway, gorgeous footage, kudos to everyone involved.

With the tools provided in the last firmware release I believe there is more potential to get the best out of the camera.

That's great footage, thanks for sharing.
I noticed these strange cell like flares ? Is this a sensor thing or was the DP using a net of some kind ?
Maybe sun bouncing off of the sensor ?

Our call is 'a sensor and sun thing'. No net used. Hoping to hear from Graeme on his take on the effect.

Definitely the Red user's best test footage till now in 2K.
Amazingly colo(u)r graded.
A clear test footage done without any pretentious, "hot air" blowing and "hype" sort of managing to gain the forum's collective confidence.
Just my 2c's again.

It amazes me that you are so incredibly jealous of Macgregor that you even have to drag it into threads that have nothing to do with him.

But am I the onlyone to find a lot of blown highlights in this clip that were not there in the TIFFs. especially the first shot, to me this is the worse color grading I could think of, and I don't mean to hurt anyone's feeling, I was just expecting something else from those great grabs that were posted.

Finner,
why should I be a jealous?
I said already enough what I think of that kind of doing things.
And again it was not about the technology and technically done things.
It was about a concept or an ideology.
And the concept/ideology just continue to show us its weak points.

Thanks Rocketeer. That's some gorgeous imagery. Nice focus racks.
I especially like the long grass and the car headlights with lens flare.
It's obvious from this footage what to do when the highlights blow out -defocus them and they look much better.

Honestly, I do agree with you... that's kinda why I asked. I feel like the contrast and highlights were pushed a bit too far, and I don't think it helps the footage. The stills we saw earlier looked beautiful, however, and the composition and image choice is great, so it's not the camera or the filmmakers. I just personally think that something got a bit lost in the grading. The great thing is that can always be undone/tweaked since the footage is RAW and you make all of your decisions after the fact. :-) It seems a lot of people do like the grading choice, however, so who knows. But I think that it's a bit harsh for the subject matter myself.
Thank you for sharing your footage however, and like Emmanuel, this post isn't meant to come across as negative - just a helpful suggestion.

Carefull Mate, remember 1999, don't be overconfident with your team, in sport everything is possible and specially when you have the French flair, what ever the Haka you will sing tomorow. Good luck dude

But hey Rocketeer, you got served by the French... so I am sure that cold dish was accented by a nice garlic, butter sauce with a cool, dry white wine and a nice cheese plate... lol.
Sorry about your team and thank you very much for the great footage... the audi rack focus was sublime... great work. Though I am amazed at how you guys got the waterfall to run up instead of down...
Thanks again for sharing your work.

On the closeup of the water hole, there's a ring of white light around the rock in the upper left corner of the frame. The contrast there seems to be suffering from jaggies and some weird blockiness. Is that due to the down-res or is that inherent in the raw source? The blockiness seems to show throughout the video.

Well the web version is H264 which is DCT based compression. So, it's hard to judge based on this clip.

I'm waiting for a codec with the intraframe compression complexity of h264 that's based on wavelet compression. Now there's the ultimate codec!
