Well, this piece has not been finished yet. THe voice over was termporaly taken from an Adidas commerical with Muhamed Ali, but since everyone is waiting for RED1 footage, i thought you might like it. Once we complete our voice over (i hope this week) you will understand the story behind it. For now you will only see nice images with beauty music.
This has nothing do to with Nike, ok? We were just a bunch of guys wanting to see what the camera could achieve.

Brilliant.
Macgregor you have done some fine piece of imagery! I love this kind of style. I don’t think the plot by it self is the most original piece of work, but it sure look good and pleasing to my eye. Keep up the good work!
Gunleik, I think constructive feedback is what most of us will offer. I have seen some of your earlier work and will surely appreciate the ones to come. So please share further work!
Anyways, I see most tolerant and hospitable people on this forum, and my guess would be that those who try to poison our community will gradually be ignored and make no further respond as the time goes. We need critics on this forum. But we need constructive criticism. Not lame comments.
Maybe its time for some heavy duty admin work. Just saying.

Thanks a lot for that. The footag is great. Nice look. Available light like it should be.
What about grading. How hard can you bang the footage?
What's your overall feeling of the cam at the moment?
What's the week spot of the cam so far?
Thanks for the infos in advance.
Keep posting. No matter what some guys say.

Great footage. But I wonder about the shutter - stutter. I don't mean to critize but I see it on most of the footage posted. Was it just a creative choice to go with a higher shutter? -- If that is what I'm seeing. It's like the viewer (me at least) can't focus on anything. It makes my eyes feel odd. Again, I'm not critizing the work, because I see it on much of the clips posted. Is it the nature of RED?
Thanks for posting.

i wonder if we're gonna get a take on how you feel the camera handles?
downsides - upsides?
the footage looks very fresh - thanks for throwing together an edit so quickly, thats more that can be said for even the 50 that have cameras - how many completed pieces have we seen? I'm not dogging the current RED owners, i'm recognizing the appreciation we should all have for this being done for us.

hey, technically, the footage is his responsibility... isn't the creativity of the story left to the vision of the director? you listed directors names, and Mac isn't an auteur - isn't he the DP? so recognize the footage for how its shot because at this moment, its not begging to be more.

It's nice to see a piece of work as well as opposed to some random shot with no sound or anything.

The camera handles well.
Still this is a cine style camera, not a ENG camera.
The body is light compared with a film camera But of course, in the end, when adding all the accessories needed (batteries, lcd, lense, matte box, follow focus) it is not longer a light camera.
This commercial was done with superspeeds at f2.8 and the RED 300mm for the last 3 shots at F5.6. All handheld.
The focus magnifier really helps when you want an accurate focus, allthough most of the shots were focused using the usual meter by our wonderfull camera assistant Pedro.
We had very strong winds, so it was hard to maintain still.
There are some downsides, i dont know if this happens because we are using the "not yet finished" cameras. When there is a very powerfull light, and you keep it for some seconds, the CMOS seems to be overheated?, and starts to create strange patterns in the image. Also you can see how the sun looks like a dark disc.
I dont think this is a terrible issue, it does not happen always, but defainately is something we should take care to avoid it.
Again, this might be not seen in the final cameras. Also some other cameras display this kind of problems (blacks where there are very powerfull lights, such as concerts). I dont want anyone scared here. ;D

On another note, I get the sensor protection deal though...
This and the sensor spots on Rocketeers' footage has me worried... surely the RED Team saw this. Why not give us some kind of heads up or does this follow in the foot steps of "Hey, we have an update for that!"

i give it up for pedro - a good camera assistant makes you.
was there much color grade applied to the images?
did you like the 300 RED?
mac, supposedly this is a sensor protect setting and there's an on/off switch in the menu dialogue, was this disabled and you still had the issue?
were you yearning for an EVF or was the LCD nicely behaving? Did you feel comfortable with the latitude given by shooting RAW so that if too much ambient light leaking through to the LCD ruined your judgement of the exposure? Did you feel the LCD is a good LCD, or did you yearn for something different?
edit - Mac answers some of the questions regarding the LCD and ISO here (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5093)
thanks for your response!
hmm that is absolutely an issue… How long did you operate the camera towards the sun before that happened? Could be an isolated incident with that particularly camera/chip?
I guess you already taken this up with the RED crew, so what do they got to say about it?

Just one question concerning the text. Please don't get me wrong, but I guess Adidas marketing team wouldn't be pretty happy seeing their "Impossible is Nothing" slogan with a Swoosh logo, since the video is public now. And it looks too good for a spoof video.

GET OUT OF TOWN DUDE!
What about fan-films then???
Well...technically many fan films are a blatant violation of somebody's copyright and trademarks. And such films are only permitted to continue through the generosity of the copyright owners. Or the sheer inability to track the creators and sue their million asses. RedUser has a mandate to discourage piracy (I wasn't allowed to mention the word P*rate B*y on here, an entirely legal entity).
But I loved seeing more footage. Nice work.

It's a very common thing to do derivative commercials and arguably proper considering how much advertising agencies do it and expect to see work they can easily categorize. Commercials are and intensely incestuous industry you can't be truly original and expect people to read your message in 30 sec. Mcgreggor clearly stated the audio was temp but I've used many pieces of copyrighted music for the specs on my reel. As far as I can tell that falls under fair use as long as I haven't sold anything using them, other than my abilities.
Andreas Fernbrant
10-05-2007, 02:50 PM
G, That's just ridiculus. First off.. He does not have any claims aganst it being orignal. If he wanted to hide the source why use the audio and source link in his post? Second, This is a spec commerical, it has nothing to do with adidas or nike nor will it be used in any commercial value to them or him. Last... This is a camera forum, we are here to judge the camera not the content.
The piracy accusation is just over the top and insulting.
Evin Grant
10-05-2007, 02:53 PM
BTW I've been on the other side of this too, I've had photos of mine taken out of portfolios and shown to other photographers as examples of the style they want for the campaign. This was by a very big advertising agency and it happens more often than not. Is that illegal? Most definitely, but I'd never sue because I'd never get in the running for another campaign with the top agencies. But if I bite the look of some other commercial or ad and then spin it with my own style am I doing the same? Maybe a little but turn about is fair play.

"While the digitization of creative works has expanded the options for consuming copyrighted material, copyright owners have begun to exploit similar technological developments to control those options. As a result, activities to which consumers of creative works have become accustomed--for example, making copies of digital music files or television broadcasts for personal use--may in the future require the copyright owner's approval and, in particular, payment of an additional fee to obtain that authorization. Any attempt to resolve digital copyright conflicts may be caught between copyright owners' desire to maintain control over their intellectual property and the ethics and expectations of consumers who have become accustomed to making relatively unfettered use of creative works in digital form. Okay, I am appalled to see that fans of red are ACTUALLY accepting copyrighted work to be used as presentational / test purposes. I do not condone this. I did not ruin it for anyone, I'm sure the QT is saved and it'll be mirrored sooner or later(and that wouldn't be good either).
You guys can say what you want and bash but I find it sad that this is accepted to begin with. Just a few days ago we were talking about image rights from Red, so how is it we will respect Red and not any other company or talent. I'm sorry I "ruined" it for anyone, but I read the post. This is a public forum for even with anyone without an account can view. Red is just starting to be reputable after it took such hard work and we're going to dent this with copyrighted material on the site it grew from? I hope moderators see this the same way.

Even if it was a frame-for-frame copy, it was a TEST designed to show off the capabilities of the camera. If he was using it for commercial purposes, if he was making money from it, or if the production was claiming it to be something other than what it is, then I'd have a problem. But for a guy to recreate something just to have the basis of a subject that provides the means to shoot some footage to demonstrate the properties of a new camera - no, I don't have a problem with that. All spec commercials violate copyright by their very nature... it's the intent that is of importance.

i'm not going to make this into a huge argument since this board is famous for these. Temp has nothing to do with anything. Saying the word Temp does not nullify you from any responsibilities. It does not provide immunity from copyrighted material.
Believe me I will use audio to show people too, but when I do this I show it to a private viewer or a friend. There is nothing wrong with Macgregor's post other than it is public. You have to understand, this file would of been replicated on mirrors and that would of only hurt Macgregor. Just because someone is a great artist does not give him a get of jail free card... sorry. I won't post another comment here because I do not think copyrighted material should be a discussion.

You piracy guys are looking way to much into this, I watched the original and Mac's footage is hardly a frame by frame re creation of that.
at best you could call it a remake but if that music wasn't there with the text "the sound is a temp rippoff of that Ali adidas commercial" you wouldn't even put the connection together.
It's a dude running down a desert road alone seriously they've used that in all kinds of stuff.

By the illustration just to show you what happend in the fashion business recently>>>
"Paris judge orders designer John Galliano to pay photographer William Klein damages"
PARIS: A Paris judge has ordered fashion designer John Galliano to pay American photographer William Klein €200,000 (US$271,000)
in damages for copying Klein's work in a recent ad campaign, judicial officials said Thursday.
In his March 28 decision, Judge Claude Vallet said Galliano's advertisements too closely resembled
Klein's hallmark "painted contacts" — oversized painted contact sheets streaked with stokes of vivid color.
The five ads — which appeared in March in French Vogue and Elle magazines, as well as several other publications
in Britain and Russia — featured three enlarged contact print images of models, highlighted with colored brushstrokes.
Vallet said the ads clearly violated intellectual property laws because Galliano never asked Klein's permission to use the style,
which the New York-born photographer developed more than a decade ago. He ordered Galliano, who designs for French luxury
house Christian Dior as well as his own label, to pay for the verdict to be published in the magazines in which the ads appeared.
Galliano's lawyer had argued that the ads did not constitute plagiarism because their images did not look like those from Klein's work.
Galliano has appealed the decision, in an attempt to lower the fine, judicial sources said.
In an interview in Thursday's Le Monde daily, Klein said he was "hurt" by Galliano's appropriation of his style.
"I am bitter because this glaring plagiarism represents an inexplicable slap in the face to my work," he said.

But then again, Macgregor is not profiting from this in any way... Unlike that scenario article you posted, and unlike your use of copyrighted material on your home page.
You use the RED brand as levrage to get more people to buy your services.

It's getting old, Sanjin. No one seems to care except you. You have no worries as you aren't the one in question of breaking copyright. If something happens and Adidas or Nike wants it pulled then they'll make it known. Just sit back and find something else to do other than complain about macgregor.

The footage was merely a test, and even had a disclaimer right on the video at the end. Why on earth should he be moved to retract the link?
If anyone here thinks I'm going to get clearance for music on the little short tests I am happy to share with the community, they're sadly mistaken. I don't think you have anything to apologize for Macgregor - directly or otherwise.
Because it's a total ripoff of the Adiddas spot.

C'mon, not a shred of respect for others property?
A moderator encouraging piracy?:sad:I second the motion. You should pay more attention to the law or you can have the officers knocking on your door. The ignorance of the law is not excuse.

Sanjin,
Hope you can see the irony of posting that legal statement and news extracts. No?
In your typical fervor (as always) to state the obvious and plagarise other people's literary and visual works, you're broken the owner's copyright!
Cheerio,
ps: please do not post French copyright law as a precedent for reasonable copyright law as most people know the controveries regarding them and are even being challenged in europe let alone the rest of the work, but I guess controversy & plagarism are important tools for you, in the absence of real art.....in your seek for fame.
hint: post some of your own work !!

I would think that Jannard would have a great deal respect for intellectual property laws. It's unfortunate that his followers do not show the same respect.
“Oakley defines itself around innovations that inspire and enhance performance,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jim Jannard. “In our 25 year history, over 400 patents have been issued worldwide, attesting to the company’s passion for inventions that set Oakley products above any competitor’s. In addition, we are equally recognized by consumers for wrapping our superior technology in artistically distinct styling, such as that reflected in our highly successful M-Frame line. Because of this, we are passionate about protecting and defending ourselves against those who attempt to use our inventions and emulate our designs without permission. We will continue to pursue legal action against any perpetrators of infringement.”
