Got a client with some questions before they rent my RED and they use AVID and I newer have so I am clueless on some of this stuff.

They want to shoot some slow-mo and want to persevere image quality as best as possible.

1. What is the pixel resolution of 2K 2:1?

2. How does AVID deal with R3D? Can it import directly?

3. Best way to shoot 2K 2:1 120 fps and cut in AVID then roto in AE?

Thanks for any help.

2k x (1/aspect ratio) x 2k = 2048 x 1024 px

Media Composer v5 can link directly to the R3D files and scale all images and aspect ratio to the HD format of 1920 x 1080 (16:9).

I just went through this with a fiber channel system and aviid tech support on the phone,
Unless you have FAST directly attached storage .r3ds are like cutting HD on a mac quadra
650. Best bet is make your mxf files w/redrocket.

Your mileage may very

I'm finding 2K R3Ds play fine using AMA in yellow [draft monitoring mode] with full debayer. R3Ds are on an internal Velociraptor drive. Lowering debayer quality a notch means you can step up to yellow/green monitoring mode. This is on a 2010 dual quad core Mac Pro.

Mainly though I'm encoding the 2K 16:9 to DNXHD 185X and cutting with that.
It's good enough to colour correct in MC and to master to HDCAM.
You can also send that to AE.
We are only going back to the R3D files for MAJOR fixing/corrections.
